In Stephen Dunn’s 2003 poem, “Charlotte Bronte in Leeds Point”, the famous author of Jane Eyre is placed into a modern setting of New Jersey. Although Charlotte Bronte lived in the early middle 1800’s, we find her alive and well in the present day in this poem. The poem connects itself to Bronte’s most popular novel, Jane Eyre in characters analysis and setting while speaking of common themes in the novel. Dunn also uses his poem to give Bronte’s writing purpose in modern day.
Maria Brandwell Bronte gave birth to Charlotte, her third child out of six within the span of seven years, on April 12, 1816 in Bradford, Yorkshire. Charlotte began her schooling at the Clergy Daughter’s School on August 10, 1824, but due to harsh conditions at the school she returned after only one year. Upon returning home she was schooled by her aunt, and then attended Roe Head in 1831. Charlotte struggled finding an occupation that she enjoyed. She became a teacher at Roe Head, but she hated the way it was run and left shortly thereafter. She also tried to be a governess twice, but due to her shy nature and the fact that she missed her sisters so dearly, she returned home. Charlotte’s thirst for knowledge took her to Brussels with her sister Emily, where she learned French, German, and management skills.
Jane spends her first 10 years of her life at Gateshead Hall, a lavish mansion. She lived with her Aunt, Mrs Reed, and three cousins, Eliza, Georgina and John. During her time in the mansion she wouldn't dare argue with the mistress, and fulfilled every duty. Jane is deprived of love, joy and acceptance. She is very much unwanted and isolated.
Based on this statement of Senf, it can be concluded that in a nineteenth century Gothic novel entitled The Tenant of Wildfell Hall; Anne uses Gothic metaphors rather than photographic descriptions to reveal the social horrors of her time. It is evident also that this statement has shown how Anne Bronte uses much the same narrative strategy as her sisters Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte.
The feeling of being trapped can be one of the most terrifying feelings a human being can experience. This is especially true if the possibility of escaping is slim and unlikely. Whether it’s being physically trapped or emotionally trapped, the feeling can cause major changes to one’s character. This is the case for the character Jane Eyre. Written in 1847, “Jane Eyre,” by Charlotte Bronte, describes the character Jane Eyre feeling trapped with a small possibility of escaping. In order to demonstrate her feelings, Bronte uses symbolism and motifs. By using these literary elements, Bronte develops Jane's character by connecting them to her, which ultimately supports the deeper message of liberation.
The tone of Jane Eyre is direct, perhaps even blunt. There is no prissy little-girl sensibility, but a startlingly independent, even skeptical perspective. At the age of 10, the orphan Jane already sees through the hypocrisy of her self-righteous Christian elders. She tells her bullying Aunt Reed, "People think you a good woman, but you are bad; hard-hearted. You are deceitful!" and "I am glad you are no relative of mine; I will never call you aunt again so long as I live. I will never come to see you when I am grown up; and if any one asks me how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say that the very thought of you makes me sick." (In fact, when her aunt is elderly and dying, Jane does return to visit her, and forgives her. But that's far in the future.) With the logic of a mature philosopher, in fact rather like Friedrich Nietzsche to come, Jane protests the basic admonitions of Christianity as a schoolgirl: "I must resist those who ... persist in disliking me; I must resist those who punish me unjustly. It is as natural as that I should love those who show me affection, or submit to punishment when I feel that it is deserved." And this bold declaration, which would have struck readers of 1847 (in fact, of 1947) as radical and "infeminine":
The Physical and Emotional Journeys of Jane Eyre. & nbsp; The novel "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë consists of the continuous journey through Jane's life towards her final happiness and freedom. This is effectively supported by five significant physical journeys she makes, which mirror the four emotional journeys she makes. & nbsp; 10-year-old Jane lives under the custody of her Aunt Reed, who hates her. Jane resents her harsh treatment by her aunt and cousins so much that she has a severe temper outburst, which results in her aunt sending her to Lowood boarding school. At the end of the eight years, she became a teacher at Lowood. At the age of eighteen she seeks independence and becomes governess at Thornfield Hall.
The story begins from the point of view of an outsider, who temporarily resides in Yorkshire Moor, Northern England in 1801. The actual event concerns itself with two families who live in Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights, each four miles apart, in 1778. Thrushcross Grange is two miles within Thrushcross Park. Gimmerton is the nearest town that provides residence for minor characters. Penistone Crags is a desolate, but beautiful rocky landscape that is a mile and a half away from the Heights that becomes a symbol of freedom, youth, and carefreeness; this is especially true for Catherine Linton. The moor generally experiences harsh winters and mild and cool summers. The weather in the moor often reflects the mood of the protagonists,
Anne Shirley is an eleven year-old orphan who lived in the early 1900s, in very poor conditions in several foster homes and then an orphan asylum, yet maintained a bright outlook on life. While in the foster homes where she was treated as a servant, and then in the orphan asylum, Anne used her imagination to get her through daily life. She developed imaginary friends who she talked to about her hopes, fears, and dreams for the future. According to Anne, these friendships were, “the comfort and consolation of my life” (Montgomery 58). Anne’s imagination was her survival instinct enabling her to persevere through the trials of being orphaned early in life. Explaining her history, Anne stated, “It was a very lonely place, I am sure I never could have lived there if I hadn’t an imagination” (40). While reflecting on her own experience, Anne remarked that a child with less imagination than herself would not have survived her circumstances.
The theme of “coming of age” is common in many novels and medias, especially those directed towards youth. A novel with such a theme is generally about a young person’s journey from childhood into adulthood and trying to navigate their way into society. In Fifth Business by Robertson Davies, and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the theme of coming of age is ubiquitous throughout both novels. Therefore, the theme of coming of age is demonstrated in the characters Percy (Boy) Staunton and Pip Pirrip in their journey towards self-improvement, their discovery of their personal values and moral, as well as their acceptance into society.
Double-Sided Secrets In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, the secrets kept by the various characters have two sides; both negative and positive consequences for the character keeping them. First, Jane keeps her whereabouts a secret while in her secret hiding spot as a child, allowing her to relax in peace, but causes her causing her harassment with her cousin and aunt. Next, Rochester keeps the secret that he is, in fact the gypsy that mysteriously visits Thornfield Hall, giving him insight into his guest’s lives, but also resulting in Jane trust in Rochester squandering.
It has been proven evident throughout the history of literature that authors will tend to incorporate their own lives into their works. This is the case in Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Although the novel is in itself fictional, Brontë invites readers into her private life by the way in which she writes her novel. Literary elements are often taken into consideration when determining the value of a literary work. However, they offer more than just layers of complexity to a work. Brontë uses countless metaphors to portray relevance to her own life. The ongoing comparison between the characters in Wuthering Heights and Brontë’s own life only exemplifies how often authors use their works to reflect their lives.
Adolescence is a time of great turmoil, in which we straddle the border between childhood and adulthood. It is a chaotic time where ideas of identity, responsibility, and change swirl around us in a whirlwind of confusion. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a text that plays with this confusion. Her journey through Wonderland can be read as a metaphorical journey through adolescence itself, where Alice encounters the plights and fears of trying to define who she is as a person, who she will be as an adult, and where she struggles to cling to the joys of her childhood. Much like adolescence, Wonderland is constantly in a state of change. It is a difficult world to navigate for Alice, fraught with instability and uncertainty, and she must do this without a clear roadmap, and with no real set of rules, much like the muddy road that a child must navigate on the way to adulthood.
A summary alone is a very amateur way of transmitting the plot or theme of a story accurately. In a classic novel like Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, simply writing a synopsis does not tell the reader what is really going on in the book, or the message it is trying to convey. Rather, symbols and motifs move the tale along, and give it depth, the way a simple rehash cannot. Symbols like fire, the chestnut tree, and Jane’s drawings explain the underlying plot points and themes in a unique way.
