Stephen King uses imagery to describe his personal situations in his journey to the writing career. On page 1, King discusses his experience reading Mary Karr’s memoir The Liars’ Club. He begins to explain his childhood and how it was an “odd, herky-jerky childhood.” Then goes to explain how Karr presents her childhood in her memoir. He compares his childhood to hers by stating his childhood was “a fogged-out landscape from which occasional memories appear like isolated trees . . . the kind that look as if they might like to grab and eat you.” In that statement it states 3 literary elements. A symbol in literature is an object that stands for a word, cause, belief, or another object. A metaphor is a figure of speech where a word of phrase is applied to something but it should not be taken literally. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. The mockingbird is innocent, singing for people to hear its music. In the book Atticus says to Scout, “Remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” When Scout asked Miss Maudie about it, Miss Maudie tells her, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy… but they sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Killing something so innocent would be a sin because it had never done anything to hurt you.
"Sonnet 73" by William Shakespeare contains many metaphors to form a descriptive image. Shakespeare used conceits, which are "fanciful extended metaphors" (567), used in love poems of earlier centuries. Shakespeare used these beautifully in "Sonnet 73." A metaphor is a "brief, compressed comparison that talks about one thing as if it were another" (554). Shakespeare expresses three major metaphors in this sonnet. The first is about age, the second about death, and of course, love follows. These three metaphors create an enjoyable poem.

She speaks broadly about the use of this technique in his work and concentrates on a few poems including "The Lady's Dressing Room." Barnett believes that Swift's poetry tends to be more voyeuristic than it is obsessed with excrement and decay. To support this, she maintains that each poem centers around the experience of seeing the obscenity (i.e. "The Lady's Dressing Room" revolves around Strephon's response to Celia's dirt and dung) rather than the obscenity.
Rachel's use of similes to show the reader the idea to keep fighting. Rachel uses scenarios to compare to her self making differences. for instance when she uses this scenario "Like a small boat on the ocean" she is comparing her self to the small boat in the ocean to convey her in a big world. Also when she says 'sending big waves into motion" she is talking about how even though the boat is small it can still make a difference. this is what she is relating to her self making differences in a big world where she would be thought little of. Another example of how similes help convey the theme would be when she says "like how a single word can make a heart open". 'A Red, Red Rose', was first published in 1794 in A Selection of Scots Songs, edited by Peter Urbani. Written in ballad stanzas, the verse - read today as a poem – pieces together conventional ideas and images of love in a way that transcends the "low" or non-literary sources from which the poem is drawn. In it, the speaker compares his love first with a blooming rose in spring and then with a melody "sweetly play'd in tune." If these similes seem the typical fodder for love-song lyricists, the second and third stanzas introduce the subtler and more complex implications of time. In trying to quantify his feelings - and in searching for the perfect metaphor to describe the "eternal" nature of his love - the speaker inevitably comes up against love's greatest limitation, "the sands o' life." This image of the hour-glass forces the reader to reassess of the poem's first and loveliest image: A "red, red rose" is itself an object of an hour, "newly sprung" only "in June" and afterward subject to the decay of time. This treatment of time and beauty predicts the work of the later Romantic poets, who took Burns's work as an important influence.

From just viewing line one it can clearly show that it’s a simile because he is pretty much stating that he compares his/her beauty to as beautiful as like a summers day. The reason he compares them is because as we know summer days are more than usual extremely hot, windy, joyful and full of life and that’s exactly what Shakespeare is doing in this line. He is connecting both the lover and the poem together and implying that he/she is as beautiful or even more than a summer’s day.
