Listening is often times confused with hearing, when in fact, they are very different processes. Hearing is the physical process of perceiving sound; the listening process follows this perception. Many people believe that listening comes naturally to people, but it is actually an active process of creating meaning of other’s spoken messages. Understanding means to comprehend the actual meaning of what is being heard. Remembering is the process of recalling the comprehensions from what the speaker had said. Most people only recall 25% of what they hear and remember only 20% of it accurately (Brownell, 2013). Interpreting refers to paying attention to the speaker’s verbal and nonverbal communication. After a listener has interpreted the information, they begin to evaluate it. They do this by analyzing the facts and decide whether they agree, disagree, or categorize them as opinions. The final step of the active listening process is to take into consideration the information that has been evaluated and respond to it. “A good listener will use reaction time to their advantage for better overall communication. While the poor listener will waste it or worse yet misuse it so that the comprehension of the message suffers” (Shrivastava, 2014, pg.1). The best method of response, which shows effective listening is by analyzing the message and providing the perspective of the listener. A listener may also respond to the speaker by supporting the message, empathizing with it, or advising the speaker (if asked). Poor listeners will respond with vague feedback such as repeating the speakers message, back channeling which is a simple gesture such as a head nod or an “uh huh”, or by offering no response at all (Brownell,
The Listening Project was a social experiment where a group of people traveled the world and asked people what they thought about America and simply listened to their responses. This experiment provided very strong responses both positive and negative from different groups of people while others had a very vague ideas or thoughts about America. By just listening to these people respond they were able to get a better understanding how people all over the world feel about America. This film helps answer two very important questions, why is it important to listen to what others think and what does it mean to be a world citizen. Listening is a unique process because it involves psychological and voluntary process that goes beyond simply reacting to sounds. It includes understanding, analyzing, evaluating, and responding. As a human, we will use different listening styles, depending on our preferences and purposes. Listening styles refer to the different ways people listen and analyze the content of a conversation. Usually, these styles either have to do with the way listeners choose to receive the message or with how they analyze the message. Listening is very important because we listen in order to establish and communicate power. There are few types of listening that can be used in order to communicate effectively.
A vital aspect of interpersonal communication is the style in which one listens. While every individual possesses their own preferred method of listening in communication, it can be enlightening to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses so as to maximize effectual communication. Within the confines of four main listening style categories, I have chosen those which best describe my own personal listening style.

This is a detailed examination of the body from head to toe which involves observation/inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. It is important to perform a series of tests and evaluations in order to create an accurate and effective plan of care for patients. Assessing a client from a holistic point of view is important. This is a patient-centered approach, and it shows the client the care they are receiving is as an individual.

Those not thoroughly educated in communication tend to confuse the terms “hearing” and “listening.” Although they appear to mean the same thing, utilize the same body part, and are both required for functional communication, there is a great difference between these two actions. Hearing involves the perception of sound using the ears, while listening is based upon giving attention to the sound being perceived. Additionally, because these concepts are different, there are also several different ways of improving hearing and listening. Thus, there are several differences between these two concepts, and it is important to signify these differences in order to practice effective communication.
In applying the skills to a case scenario, I found it difficult to focus and use my active listening skills. I do know that in an ideal situation, I will more than likely be one on one with my client and will generally conduct the interview in a quieter atmosphere, allowing me to focus better on what the client discloses. However, with continuous practice I believe I will be able to overcome becoming distracted by background noises.
Over the past few days, I have been able to reflect on my listening skills; both strengths and weaknesses. Although I do have some strong points as a listener, there are several areas I need to improve on. Upon reflection, I was also able to create a number of goals I have for working on these skills over the semester and continuing these after the conclusion of the class.

It is what we choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding, remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we can change them. This will also allow us to improve our listening skills in the workplace, school, at home, etc.
Reflective listening is an important tool for effective communication and a valuable resource in times of family conflict. In order to understand what is being discussed in this paper I will first explain what reflective listening is, then I will move on and elaborate on my recent experience utilizing this technique, and finally I will give my opinion on how it can strengthen familial relationships. Reflective listening involves two pertinent steps: Ensuring the listener has understood the speaker’s message and stating the idea back to the speaker in order to confirm the information has been understood without error. Reflective listening can be very effective when having a serious conversation, especially when the speaker and listener are involved in conflict or having a difficult time understanding the feelings another is experiencing.

It is an important virtue when it comes to communication.People should be taught from childhood the importance of learning how to listen. If we realized how much we would benefit from being good listeners, I believe that things would change. Lack of listening skills affects marriages, parents and children, teachers and students, employers and employees, foreign affairs, and the list goes on.

Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. The individual does not have to agree with the ideas, values or opinions of the speaker; however, to fully understand them, one must put aside their criticism.
