Listening is one of the most essential ability to understand what you hear. In order to listen effectively, a person should know how to listen. We spend our most time with listening news, television, friends etc. Students almost spend their whole time with listen their lecturer. They are listening to learn something.
If effective listening is taught students properly, they will easily get what they listen. So they can listen consciously and learn faster. We consciously (and systematically) ‘teach’ effective listening, ensuring that students are aware that they are being ‘taught’ to listen to learn. (Caspersz. D. & Stasinska. A, 2015)

Listening has been characterized as a set of activities that involves an individual‘s capacity to apprehend, recognize, discriminate, or even ignore certain information. It has also been considered to contain complex and active processes that are involved in linguistic knowledge, personal expectation, cognitive processing skills, and world knowledge. Listening involves interaction and negotiation with a speaker and requires prior experience of a listener to best understand and interpret what a speaker says. (Jeon, 2007, p.50)
As we start our lesson, we should apply pre-listening and post listening phases to activate student’s schemata, background knowledge. These activities are crucial because they help students’ listening learning process. This encourages and prepares students for while listening phase. So they are motivated for listening without much effort.
It is important for teachers to plan their lesson depending on their students’ needs and after am observe, teacher can find ideal methods for his students. There is no an ideal method that fits all kinds of classes. But we should find our students’ limit, diagnose their capacity, and find out the factors that may influence their listening comprehension. Being an active participant in language learning class allows students/learners to practice what they know or what they have just learned. As a teacher, we should create a life-like environment when we are teaching students a language. This environment should allow students to talk, practice often. For this, information gap activities, role-plays and jigsaw activities are the best practices for foreign language learners to speak with each other for a reason and this creates an authentic environment to speak. So, this activities can save time for both students and teachers in learning process. Teachers should motivate students and facilitate to encourage them. Teacher has to be a model for their students. The learners in experimental group become independent in speaking and did not need the teacher assistance which was in the light of using information gap activities. So, it is recommended to the teachers to use information gap activities to grow self-dependent learners. Listening only to get information takes away much of what the speaker is saying, by being able to empathize with someone one is on the same wavelength. The only problem with just listening during a lecture is that people don’t retain all that information over a long period of time. Most of the information is stored in the brain until that test comes and all the information leaves when you hand in the test.
The Listening Project was a social experiment where a group of people traveled the world and asked people what they thought about America and simply listened to their responses. This experiment provided very strong responses both positive and negative from different groups of people while others had a very vague ideas or thoughts about America. By just listening to these people respond they were able to get a better understanding how people all over the world feel about America. This film helps answer two very important questions, why is it important to listen to what others think and what does it mean to be a world citizen. Also it highlights key concepts of communication, skepticism, empathetic listening and vividness.
In conclusion, I think we need to master different listening styles to be used in different situation in order to contribute to effective communication strategies and planning.
A vital aspect of interpersonal communication is the style in which one listens. While every individual possesses their own preferred method of listening in communication, it can be enlightening to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses so as to maximize effectual communication. Every business consists of a variety of communication activities such as listening, speaking, questioning, gathering and participating in small work groups. The listening skill is one of the most important aspects of communication process. It helps to understand and read the other person’s message. Effective listening skills create positive workplace relationships which influence our opinions and responsiveness to one another.
Teaching listening is vital for learners. Because listening skills are the most frequently used. Most language learners want to be able to understand what people are saying to them in English, either face-to-face, on TV or on the radio, in theatres and cinemas, or on tape, CDs or other recorded media. [31] Listening skills are ways to help learners listen to something more effectively. The example of activity for listening is to watch movie in English, without subtitles. Even if learners cannot understand what the character is speaking, thanks to the video they can guess.
One class in which I have observed poor listening skills is psychology. I’ve noticed the same thing a couple of times actually. The class consists of about forty students, of which a little more than half show up. The ones who do show up walk in half awake. They all seem tired and they carry a big cup of coffee. You have the few who pretend to care or at least make themselves care by sitting in the front row of class because they know they can’t fall asleep there. And finally the ones who take the seats behind the tall kids and all the way in the back of the classroom.
According the limitations we had, I learn following lessons from this teaching practice session. Firstly, it is better to give instructions as simple and clear as possible. For instance, using more short sentences and one sentence only for one key information. Also, I found it is not necessary to give all instructions that they do not need to know in advance
The first step to good listening skills in lectures is to be prepared. By reading the chapter being covered, or re-reading notes it is easier to listen. Because the content is not being introduced for the first time, it is easier to comprehend it. Also by avoiding distractions, and picking a seat that is easy to pay attention in, the chances of listening well are increased, even before the teacher begins to speak. (Wells 1)
In all aspects in life effective listening plays an important role in our lives, both professionally and personally. As many of know from experience listening is never easy in fact it can be difficult to understand what is being said by the speaker. Because of laps in attention we tend to misunderstand some of the messages that are being relayed to us or disregard them altogether. It is what we choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding, remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we can change them. This will also allow us to improve our listening skills in the workplace, school, at home, etc.
