John Neufeld is the author of “Lisa Bright & Dark”. He lives and works in New
York City these days. He was educated at Yale. His style of writing are usually touching stories. Finding information about John Neufeld is quite difficult since the Internet nor the book has provided any help whatsoever. Lisa Shilling is the main character of this book. She is just sixteen as she slowly loses her mind. Lisa is quite an example of teenager with problems which is why she’d be classified as a very real character. Her dangerous state of mind reflects the realism that this does happen. Her moods are forever changing.
Lisa’s motivation as a teenager is to live her live normally.
This is hard to do since she is in need of help. Many can relate to Lisa and her illness because it is among teenagers today. Her mother and father snub her off completely overlooking her serious unstableness. Luckily, she has friends that care enough to help her. The main conflict of this book is the struggle to convince Lisa’s parents that she is ill and needs serious help. Her parents did not pay attention in the beginning when Lisa started to act a little different. This is rather understandable. Lisa was in school and pricked herself with a needle that drew blood. Many told Lisa’s stubborn parents that she needed a psychiatrist. They simply refused to accept the fact that their daughter was in need of anything. When Lisa even screamed out that she needed help, they simply wouldn’t understand. She even w...
Her father works out of town and does not seem to be involved in his daughters lives as much. Her older sister, who works at the school, is nothing but plain Jane. Connie’s mother, who did nothing nag at her, to Connie, her mother’s words were nothing but jealousy from the beauty she had once had. The only thing Connie seems to enjoy is going out with her best friend to the mall, at times even sneaking into a drive-in restaurant across the road. Connie has two sides to herself, a version her family sees and a version everyone else sees.
In the poem “Snapping Beans,” by Lisa Parker, there is a common recurrence of desolation. Parker conveys this message through her use of metaphors and through the symbols that she uses. In this narrative poem, a young small town girl, who is on a break from college, in visiting with her grandmother. The two seem to have a close relationship, but when the grandmother asks the speaker about school, instead of telling her the truth, she says that everything is fine. This causes the speaker to be upset. The tone Parker conveys throughout this poem is frustration. The speaker wishes to share her experiences with her grandmother that she loves dearly, but she refrains for the fear of upsetting her.
The rise of Christianity in Rome did not come easily. It came with much destruction and death. The spark of Christianity in Rome came from an appearance of Martyrs in Rome. Martyrs were people that were executed for going against the common beliefs of pagan (polytheistic) ways. (Tignor, 2011, p. 286) Because of these awful executions, Christianity is said to be based off of “the blood of martyrs.” One of their main ways of spreading Christianity was through the sharing of their writings and by 300 CE there was an exceptional amount of book production throughout Rome. (Tignor, 2011, p. 289) “Christianity operated as one among many minority religions in the Roman Empire, and on several occasions experienced widespread persecution, especially under the emperors Nero (r. 54–68), Decius (r. 249–251), and Diocletian (r. 284–305). However, the situation changed radically under the emperor Constantine (r. 306–337), who in 313 issued the Edict of Milan that made Christianity a legitimate religion in the empire.” (Melton, 2010, p. 634)
"There are many people who when we ask them to join us say that they prefer to work for human beings. But are we not working for human beings? Are we not constantly striving to make men and women more humane and disposed to all kindly feelings and to teach children to become gentle and merciful? Is not everything which tends to elevate man in the mortal scale a benefit to him”
It is evident that Lisa is subjected to medication and hospitalization for her treatment. However, this method of treatment was not effective for her, because despite her being hospitalized for the last eight years; she still does not take her medicine. Since for those eight years no significant changes have been made following her diagnosis, another mode of treatment would be advisable. I would recommend the self-help strategies. Although many healthcare providers overlook this treatment method, it seems to be very
Christians went from being persecuted to dominating Rome rather quickly. In a world where separation between church and state does not exist, a Christian becoming the sole emperor of Rome symbolized a huge turning point in history. The power switched and the Pagans in turn became persecuted. Christians rose up and took control of all aspects of Roman society. The Pagan past was destroyed, banned, or forgotten about. Those Christians that did not agree with how things were being run either left the empire and became monks or formed their own sect. All of Rome changed.
Born out of wed-lock to a rebellious teen-aged mother in an era when unwed mothers were uncommon, Bella Rose became known as he homeliest child the people of Homewood, Montana, had ever seen. Born with odd facial features and a club foot, she would later be stricken with poliomyelitis, resulting in further disability. Unsuccessful attempts to correct her severe spinal curvature defect resulted in even more damage to her face.
The memoir The Buddha and the Borderline tells the story of Kiera Van Gelder’s courageous journey receiving treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is a personality disorder defined by the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) as “a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, affects, and marked impulsivity” (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). BPD is a personality disorder and thus cannot be diagnosed until after the age of 18 when using the DSM-IV-TR’s diagnostic criteria. This does not imply, however, that BPD is an illness that restricts itself to adulthood; although the age of onset varies from individual to individual, BPD-like symptoms or features are usually evident in adolescence and sometimes even observed in childhood. In her memoir, Gelder states that she was diagnosed with BPD at 30 years of age but she later goes on to describe the symptoms of mental illness she experienced her entire life, including symptoms of depression and anxiety, mood swings, self-injurious behavior, suicide attempts, extreme self-image issues, binge eating and purging, and drug abuse (Gelder, 2010).
Mental health is a portion of healthcare that not too many people know about. Although it’s not as hands on as other nursing fields, it is equally as important. Mental health cases are just as prevalent, if not more, than other nursing cases. The side effects of mental health cases are rapidly growing too. Borderline personality disorder or BPD is the topic of this paper and its main focus is to instruct the reader about the entirety of the disorder as well as treatment plans and patient education.
Christianity in ancient Rome threatened to take power away from emperors and to overtake other religions. This lead to the brutal persecution of many Christians. The Romans tried to eliminate the threat of Christianity to keep their empire and religion powerful. The killing of Christians lasted from 30 to 313 CE. There were an estimated 100,000 Christians killed during this time.

When Christianity was still quite young in the Empire, many Christians refused to worship the emperor (which was viewed as treasonous) and refused to acknowledge the pagan gods as well. When a devastating fire broke out in Rome, Emperor Nero blamed the Christians and sentenced many of them to die in awful and horrific ways so cruel that even Roman citizens felt pity. And then when Decius was emperor he called for the aid of the gods in his war with the Goths and required all citizens to worship the gods publicly. When the Christians didn't obey Decius decided to threaten and torture the Christians until they
Conversation is like two well matched wrestlers that are facing off. In both situations there is a constant struggle back and forth to gain control. Deborah Tannen discusses the differences between the ways women and men converse and how the defference may cause conflicts between the two in her essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” Although Tannen researches both genders’ method of communication tendencies, Tannen supports the woman’s method more throughout the essay.
Reason 1: The emperor during the early age of Rome could not accept the fact that he was not christians Lord therefore the Christians were persecuted and put to death. The roman emperors could not accept that
