Letter: Television and Its Benefits
Dear Sir/Madam,
In response to last nights letter in the Rhondda Leader. I am writing
to disagree that television has negative effects.
Television has a positive impact on people by entertaining, This was
stated by 'Dr P Neiman'.'Television cheers us up when we're depressed
or feel down' E.g. Friends is a series comedy programme that makes you
want to laugh and giggle. Another way why television entertains people
in that some shows give you knowledge which increases you IQ. Example
of shows that increase your knowledge are ' who wants to be a
Millionaire' and 'Weakest Link'. They have double value. They
entertain and they simultaneously install knowledge by asking
questions.
These programmes usually make you scream at the television making you
interact as well.Television can make educational issues entertaining
and interest people especially the young people because children love
Dinosaurs and bright colourful things. Programmes such as 'Walking
with dinosaurs'. Will be enjoyable and at the same time be giving you
loads of information by giving the names of the dinosaurs, which were
carnivores and herbivores etc.
Television teaches us about different cultures. Television helps us be
more aware of political, cultural and religious values different to
our own western values, For example. the situation in Iraq against
Sadam Hussein. Also certain programmes such as 'Ready steady cook'
expose us and teach us about different kinds of exotic foods. This can
also lead to a more healthy life styles and show where the foods used
in the recipes are originally from which will build up you common
knowledge. television increases awareness and helps promote racial
tolerance and to think before they say. an example of a Programmes
which does this is 'The bill' because it goes through mainly
different activities through racial to violence. It also shows how it
is dealt with and why it is wrong.
Television raises awareness about sensitive issues. Television can
teach teenagers about drugs, alchol and health and safety issues. The

I, for one, can attest to this, as my knowledge of baseball was limited as a child, until one day I decided to watch a broadcast of the San Francisco Giants; now I am a baseball superfan with friends from all over the country who share in this interest, and also a softball player who exercises every day. Steven Johnson in “watching television makes you smarter” believes that the complexity of the shows' plots has a cognitive value, nutrition for the viewers. Dana Stevens arguments this fact by also stating that television only “teaches you to watch more television”, the complexity of the new shows help you understand how the show will turn out. However, they do not help you for real life events that the shows try to depict. In my opinion, television is just a fun thing to do occasionally to relax and get your mind off of the regular life. It can teach you some things however you should take them in consideration.
In general, the effects of television and drugs cannot be compared as equivalents; nevertheless, their study is worth of consideration. They are still two mysteries to be solved: why people spend so many hours in front of a TV set instead of doing something proactive and why people seeks refuge in drugs. We may not know all of the answers but we know all the of questions. While we walk towards the light hoping to find the answers to these mysteries, there are still many things to be done. In the meanwhile, one thing must remain in our minds: we will still face many obstacles together as society, with or without television and drugs.
In our society entertainment has become an immense part of our daily lives. We spend extensive periods of time watching TV, which in general has become a habit for many individuals, and a necessity for others. In the article Television as teacher by Neil Postman he argues that television does not help us learn what is necessary for further education, and that it shouldn’t be utilized as a main learning tool because it undermines the techniques applied in teaching centers. In the book McKibben carries out an experiment; he watches the entire television broadcast of 93 separate cable channels for one entire day. In all McKibben viewed 24 hours of programming from 93 separate cable stations, that is more than 2,200 hours of television. As I read Television as a teacher written by Neil postman, His main argument throughout the article is that television isn’t a good or effective way to use education, and he describes how it’s actually worst for us and were not learning the full purpose of education and learning by watching tv. His main example was Sesame Street, and how children sit in front of a television for hours watching what they call education television and claiming they get knowledge from it but they're getting no social interaction by watching it. Also, Neil postman makes excellent points by comparing education television to a real classroom, saying how a classroom has social interaction, the ability to ask a teacher question, development of language, and it’s a
...ision viewing. This gives a “best of both worlds” approach to television and media. It leaves people knowledgeable about the world around them and the current trends, as well as giving them free time to spend being active. Going to the extreme, either for or against television, is really not the best way to live in our media-reliant world. The middle ground is the best place to be in our drive to be constantly in touch with the world around us.
When the first television was first successfully shown, people thought that this invention brought people to a new age, and that the television was a huge benefit to humanity. Unfortunately, since then the Golden Era of television's moral and standards have fallen drastically. We are far away from the days when Lassie and the town of Mayberry ruled the airways and were the talk of America. The government is, and must be, responsible for providing homes to the homeless in the city of Toronto as it is increasing day by day significantly. The main causes of homelessness are unaffordable housing, inadequate public assistance and an undeveloped housing system. The government is focusing on bringing people to the city of Toronto instead of settling already living people and adjusting to them. Failure of many public institutions is also a cause of homelessness, about 150,000 to 300,000 people faced homelessness in 2023 in Canada and the number is significantly increasing in 2024.At this stage homelessness is a big issue for Canada and poverty is the main cause for that.

Mumme and Fernald’s paper, “The Infant as Onlooker: Learning from Emotional Reactions Observed in a Television Scenario,” explains that children 12 months old can use societal cues that they see on a television to influence how they interact with and regard objects. In this study, 10 and 12-month-olds watched an actress on television interact with a toy prior to interacting with the toy themselves. Children observed the actress reacting to the objects neutrally in the control test and with positive or negative emotions in the experimental tests. Mumme and Fernald found that the 12-month-olds changed how they interacted with and regarded new objects based on how they watched the actress interact with the objects on television. Although there was not much of a difference in how the children interacted with toys after watching the neutral and positive affect videos, the negative affect condition resulted in a significant increase in children’s negative emotion and their tendency to avoid the object. This study suggests that children can learn important lessons about how to interact with the world around them through television. Firstly, we can get a lot of new knowledge through learning. Television can be a powerful teacher.
