The heartfelt emotion of charity shines throughout Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Each character shows love and charity differently to numerous people. Charity can also be called “love” from the various translations of the King James Bible. Jesus Christ imitates the perfect way to express charity. His example represents the perfect way for people to show the feeling of love within their heart to the others around them.
Jean Valjean understands the deep emotions felt when the desire to love others persists in one’s heart. Valjean originally felt this desire specifically within his own family. Though during his years in prison, he lost it. In striving to feed his starving family by stealing a loaf of bread, Valjean earned himself “nineteen years” in prison. “He entered in 1796 for having broken a pane of glass and taken a loaf of Bread” (Hugo 86) Valjean loved his family so dearly that he risked rotting in jail rather than seeing them starve. He demonstrates pure charity in this act, for no sane person, would risk his life for others, unless his motivations lie in love. Javert, born in jail, saw himself as an ostracized adolescent with but two paths open to him. He could choose either to be a policeman or a criminal. He chose to be on the right side of the law. Valjean, a peasant, spent time in jail as a young man and came out of it hating society. He believed himself to be apart from it, and chose to live in hatred and crime. Fortunately, the action of a kindly old bishop prevented him from wasting the rest of his life. Valjean switched to tread the path of life on a more morally upright road. He became mayor, protector of society.

In Dryden's Lucretius, the speaker argues that (1) Love is a sickness, (2) Love's sickness enslaves, and (3) all attempts to remedy Love's sickness are vain and will only frustrate the lover. Just as Milton's Adam and Eve become enslaved to sin by disobeying God, so mankind becomes enslaved to Love when pierced with Cupid's "winged arrow". Les Misérables (1862), a novel set in early nineteenth century France, presents a story of obsessions in honor, love, and duty, and through it redemption and salvation. It is the story of the poor Jean Valjean, condemned to an unfair amount of time in prison and a life on the run for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. The kind act of forgiveness from a Bishop with whom Jean Valjean stays one night, changes the course in which he chooses to live his life. Under a different identity, he becomes wealthy from a business he starts and later is elected mayor of the small town of Montreuil. He falls madly in love with Fantine, one of the workers in his factory. Because Fantine, one of the very poorest and most pitiful residents of Montreuil, has a child born out of wedlock, Jean Valjean as the respected mayor must keep his love for her a secret. When Fantine dies unexpectedly, Jean Valjean vows he will raise her daughter Cosette, and shield her from all the evils in the world. Through all of this, Jean Valjean is being pursued by Javert, a policeman whose entire life has been dedicated to finding Jean Valjean. While running from Javert, Jean Valjean and Cosette find themselves in Paris in the middle of the 1832 Revolution. As Cosette matures, she falls in love with Marius, a young revolutionist. Despite the objections of Jean Valjean, Cosette continues to secretly visit Marius at night. During the revolution, Marius is injured badly and Jean Valjean, after finding a love note from Marius to Cosette, quickly comes to the rescue of the wounded gentleman. Revived in modern society through the popularity of Les Misérables (the movie and musical), Victor Hugo is an author unafraid to address the ironies interwoven into the fabric of life in the 1800s. In his writings, Hugo alludes to the idea that life itself is a form of war as people battle individual enemies specific to their circumstances. Les Misérables and Quatre-Vingt-Treize are didactic in nature, ironically depicting the false stereotypes associated with social class and religion, while expanding on the absolute that every action has an equal consequence, and the thought that man cannot save his soul from destruction.
In Les Miserables, Victor Hugo portrays human nature in a neutral state. Humans are born with neither good nor bad instincts, but rather society affects our actions and thoughts. Hugo portrays the neutral state of mind through Jean Valjean and Cosette. The two extremes of good and evil are represented through Thénardier and the bishop. Good and evil coexists in the society and affects Valjean and Cosette. It is the two extremes of good and evil that dictate the lives of Valjean and Cosette. The bishop represents charity and love. Everything he's ever had, he gave to charity. When the bishop first met Valjean, he said, "You need not tell me who you are. This is not my house; it is the house of Christ. It does not ask any comer whether he has a name, but whether he has an affliction. You are suffering; you are hungry and thirsty; be welcome. And do not thank me; do not tell me that I take you into my house..... whatever is here is yours." (pg. 15-16) The bishop didn't look at him as a convict; he looked at him as a fellow brother. Later, when the bishop found out that Valjean stole his silver, he wasn't mad, but offered all of his silver to Valjean saying, "Don't forget that you promised me to use this silver to become an honest man." Secondly, we come to the element of Self-Sacrifice. This is also another widely used theme in Les Miserables. One such example of this element is with Valjean. He lets Marius and Cosette marry, and for a while, he seems all right with that fact. Later on however, he goes to Marius, and confesses to his past. He tells Marius his whole story, and thinks it best if he never sees Cosette again. Marius agrees…but allows Valjean the occasional visit. Only at the end, does Marius realize what a good man Valjean is…and by then it was too late. Valjean dies shortly after Marius and Cosette visit him to ask him to come back and live with them.
Critics of art have always profusely praised the lyrical nature of Hugo’s prose and poetry. The breadth of his vision is expansive and all encompassing. It does not classify between beauty and depravity, perfection and mundane, sublime and base. It is syncretic amalgamation of antipodes. A fusion of contradictions but a breathtaking whole. He paints pictures, describes sounds and captures the imagination of the reader. Reading Hugo is tantamount to allowing a painter the canvas of one’s imagination, without thinking, without any conscious effort, he draws pictures like a master craftsmen. Victor Hugo's 1862 epic novel Les Miserables ranks among the literary greats of the 19th Century. Despite its awesome length, it has remained as one of the most approachable readings of literature. The tale of Jean Va1jean, the hero in the novel, is a fascinating story that beckons readers to turn the pages at a finious, pace. Since the novel is divided into several segments with names of the characters as the titles, the reader will realize that Les Miserables is a novel exploring the relationship of personal and communal destinies. As we progress through the pages, we witness the transformation of our outlaw protagonist and his persistent strivings, to overcome his despair and egotism. The reader will feel from Vaijean's adventures, that the moral character can and does grow, no matter how his previous devastating experiences had hardened him. Since Valjean is the unifying centre of the action in the novel, his moral and spiritual growth through his interaction with characters in Les Miserables will give credence to the earlier proposition that the moral character can evolve.
Years after the French Revolution, the French Empire was defeated in the Napoleonic wars, resulting in a broken union full of social and political unrest. Various problems in society, like class struggle, arose as the French people tried to reform and restore their country’s strength. In the novel Les Misérables, the author Victor Hugo criticizes the prevalent flaw of social injustice in nineteenth century France while encouraging people to persist for change by providing an accurate historical account of adversity in society and culture in Post-Napoleonic France. The author uses symbolism, characterization, and irony in a novel format in order to communicate the themes that love can combat misery and that prejudice is a hindrance to social justice. Hugo condemns the social system of nineteenth century France by accurately juxtaposing two types of poor, the hard workers and the indecent opportunists.
The French Revolution turned society upside down and, as many times before, literature and theater reflected the new society and way of life that came after the fall of the Bastille. The nineteenth century Romantic Movement looked to find ways to release poetry as well as theater from the binding rules of the previous centuries and Victor Hugo was at the forefront of this movement. His tragedy, Hernani, is very different from Racine’s Andromache written in the seventeenth century when the absolute authority of the king and the focus on duty were the guiding forces not only in society but in literature and theater as well. Differences between these two plays can be noticed through several elements, such as in their subject matters, religious ideas, staging and the presence or absence of the three unities, which reflect life before and after the French Revolution as well as how much it has affected society and traditions.
