“Learning Me” I walked down the hallway to the last door on the left. I was shaking like crazy and could barely grab the door handle. “40 minutes Abby, that’s only two 20 minute halves. Just walk in” I told my 11 year old self. I knew if I could just walk in I would end up loving it. I grabbed the cold metal handle and turned it. I opened in the door so quickly that the other teachers probably thought I was trying to make a big entrance. I took a deep breath and looked around. The room looked smaller than I first thought, and smelled like one my mom’s Scentsy warmers. This was my very first day helping in a special needs classroom. The room was loud and colorful. Everyone was so nice and loving… so I thought. Five minutes after meeting everyone, it was time for their play break to be over and they had to work. This caused a big upset between the kids. I was asked to help a little boy named Noah. Noah was a 7 year old autistic child who could hear, but could not talk. This made it kind of hard to work with him, but after a few minutes I fell in love with this little boy. His eyes would light up when he got an answer correct, and he would excitedly do another problem. He finished his work and gave me the biggest hug I had every received. I absolutely adored these children. Experiencing them learn, play, and make friendships was so rewarding. These kids taught me things the world couldn’t. I learned to be understanding, to be patient, I learned that my way isn’t the only way to get things done. I learned compassion. Most of all I learned that this was gonna be what I did for the rest of my life. I practically ran down the hallways as if I was in a track meet. Everyday I would do as much as I could in my short 45 minutes. Everything that was asked of me was finished as quickly as I possibly could. I not only helped the kids, but the teachers also helped me with my school. My grades went up tremendously. I went from an average C student to the high honor roll in just weeks. The teacher’s helped fuel my love for school again. They taught me that in ten years, none of those mean girls would matter, but my grades
