Leadership Behaviors Throughout research many behaviors are listed as actions to improve climate and trust. Kouses and Posner (2007) uphold praise, modeling the way, shared decision-making, caring about others, and creating a shared vision and goals. There are many different aspects of transformational leaders but all the different authors state the foundation of building a relationship and having a shared vision. Modeling the way, enabling others to act, which is building the relationship, taking risks, and encouraging the heart is all part of transformational leadership theory (Boesman, 2008; Groves and Larocca, 2011).

Gordon & Louis, 2009 was one study that did not find any significance between leadership behavior and student achievement. The authors reviewed 803 quantitative and qualitative studies conducted in all 50 states. Throughout the literature, they found three common themes of principal characteristics that increase student achievement: precursors (conditions that shape leadership behaviors), behaviors, and leadership styles. A relationship between teachers, parents, and students was found in many of the studies to have significant positive influence on student

Leadership training programs allow for teachers to use their professional experience as an educator and combine it with the academic and hands on experience of being a leader by providing a comprehensive program. Leadership “…is learnable by providing real world leadership training” (Ramsey, 2006, p.xx). In this time of transition and uncertainty, research suggests that transformational leadership is highly effective (Straight, 2006). Leadership research has drifted from emphasis on the competence of leaders to “manage change” to the ability to “transform” organizations. Transformational leaders have attributes and behaviors needed to successfully motivate and empower employees. According to Bernard Bass (1990), transformational leadership occurs when a leader transforms, or changes, his or her followers in three important ways that together result in followers trusting the leader, performing behaviors that contribute to the achievement of organizational goals, and being motivated to perform at a high level. Transformational leaders can achieve greater performance by stimulating innovative ways of thinking and transforming follower’s beliefs and aspirations. Maxwell (Maxwell, 2007) articulates that most of the time, influence is more important than formal power or authority. I agree with him. Influence is very important in organizational and co...
It is my belief that transformational leadership improves organizational effectiveness, and, therefore, should be used in every organization. As my goal is to move up the management chart, I trust this theory and concept will enable me to be a more effective leader. The transformational leadership style is one of the widely used approaches today. Organizations believe that transformational leaders influence performance. Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.

Transformational Leadership. The group agrees that being a transformation leader has great benefits in the workplace. A transformational leader inspires followers to higher levels of motivation which can transpire into higher levels of performance (Satterlee, 2009). Transformational leaders serve as the right hand for increasing subordinate performance level and job satisfaction while increasing their commitment to the organization (Khan, Khan, & Shahzad, 2013). The transformational leader values integrity, fairness, and trust which facilitate organizational commitment (Khan, Khan, & Shahzad, 2013). According to J.M. Burns (Drenkard, 2013), a real transformation can only happen when there is a relationship between the leader and the followers. The leader does not have all the power and authority. He or she creates an environment that brings the leader and followers together. An effective lead...
Bass and Avolio (1990) identified four dimensions of transformational leadership: the first one being idealized influence: hence the degree of inspirational behaviour that causes subordinates to identify with the leader. Secondly, inspirational motivation that encompasses the degree of inspiration subordinates gain from their leader’s vision. Thirdly, intellectual stimulation is the degree to which a leader encourages followers’ creativity. The last dimension, individualized consideration, describes the degree to which the leader coaches and listens to the subordinate. Bass (1985) claimed that transformational leaders are more effective than transactional leadership, as it increases followers’ confidence and causes higher motivation and higher organizational performance accordingly. The positive relation between transformational leadership and OCB has been supported empirically (Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Moorman, &
Characteristics defining leaders and managers along with growing changes in competition, markets, new technologies, and customer sophistication, elevate the importance of leaders in all industries (Kotter, 1996). Even the smallest and least complex organizations are not easily handled when determining the best use of human and financial resources as they, along with the largest or highly complex systems require comprehensive business policies and procedures. To achieve this optimally, they must be led not simply managed. Transformational leaders focus on team building through motivation and collaboration to move their institution, department, or work team to the next level of success and outperforming themselves to accomplish change and improvement while providing opportunities and professional growth for each individual staff member (Ingram, 2015).
Transformational leaders birth new transformational leaders. Followers themselves become transformational leaders and a journey of extra mile partnership started.
Are leaders born or created? We hold leaders at the pinnacle of society. They are often times those who hold strong ideals and are adequate at making decisions. Additionally, they seem to possess distinct leadership characteristics that boast vast influence, and indirectly convey just how their individual methods differ. Academic leadership has an important influence on learners. It can motivate and challenge students to work harder, pursue higher education and succeed. Yet, the wrong kind of leadership by teachers and administrators can have the opposite effect and result in discouraging students from their studies and causing educational failure (Rouse, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to review two academic pieces of writing that were written from different perspectives regarding the importance of leadership in the school life. Roby (2011) examined the effect and the power of teachers who are good leaders on school environments.
As mentioned before, leadership styles take an important role in running a school. Unfortunately, many principals have not yet defined their leadership style and struggle to administrate their school. They are responsible not only of teachers and students, but of every employee in the school. They have the power to control all the resources available to improve and meet academic goals. Despite their power, principals need to identify appropriate leadership styles to succeed as
