Lateral violence is a major issue that often occurs within the healthcare setting, and it places great impact on the delivery of healthcare. I personally have experienced being a victim of lateral violence within my current workplace setting. In November 2014, I began a new job working with patients dealing with alcohol and substance addiction. I came onto the job with an ADN, while there was an older male nurse with a BSN who started the same time I did. This nurse was assigned to a work a supervisory position on a higher-level monitoring detoxification/behavioral unit. I noticed that there were times when myself, as well as other female nurses, would need to communicate to him that a patient needed to be more closely monitored. On several
occasions, this nurse would raise his voice at myself and the other female nurses in a verbally demeaning manner. One day in particular, I recall asking him to speak to the doctor before sending a patient down to my unit who was legally blind. He inappropriately yelled at me, “Oh, I’m about to shut that down! The patient is coming down to the unit!” When I tried to explain my concerns, he hung up the phone in my face. I promptly called my nurse manager to report this situation so that it could be addressed. It is so important that lateral violence be addressed, because it greatly affects the peace of the work environment. It can make a person feel belittled, intimidated, fearful, and anxious. Not only is the healthcare worker unable to provide quality care to the patients, but they also struggle within themselves having become a victim of lateral violence. This causes a major disturbance within the atmosphere of the workplace, effecting both the healthcare workers and the patients.
Horizontal violence is a form of workplace relational aggression, an experience that is rampant in the nursing profession (McKenna, Smith, Poole, & Coverdale, 2003). The expression, horizontal violence, is used to describe cruel behaviors between colleagues of comparable status, such as registered nurses, in the workplace. Research has shown a variety of destructive peer-to-peer behaviors that are detrimental to the profession and healthcare systems (Farrell, 2001). Nevertheless, little research has been done on “eating their young,” horizontal violence arising between those with unequal power, such as registered nurses and students (Thomas & Burk, 2009).
The trauma related to negative behavior can afflict the healthcare environment on many levels, from creating a hostile work environment in which job performance is affected, by increasing job turnover and causing nurses to leave the profession altogether. The Joint Commission states that in the United States 65.6 million workers have experienced or witnessed bullying, psychological harassment affects 38 percent of healthcare workers, and 44 percent of nurses are impacted by this behavior (The Joint Commission, 2016). Myers, et al. , (2016) performed their study as through collaboration with a New York State wide study to explore nuurses’ experience with lateral violence. Myers, et al. , (2016) offered both online and paper surveys for nurses comfort. The study revealed that lateral violence is seen throughout all roles of nurses from staa nurses to leadership roles.
Horizontal violence is an action that has been reported and documented in nursing and other healthcare professions for many years. This type of behavior between nurses has provided very discouraging and truly serious outcomes for nursing professionals and unfortunately for their patients as well. Nurses are subjected to incivility at a higher rate than other job fields, and this concern is one that has an impact on the mental health and well-being of nurses and can lead to a reduction in job satisfaction and employee recruitment and retention
Therefore, this position statement is relevant because these abuses can be seen in day-to-day healthcare environment. The effects of violence in nursing can be harmful to the proper function within a workplace. It can be damaging to the nursing profession and patient care. According to (Johnston et al., 2010, p.36), workplace violence is “spreading like a ‘superbug.’” Studies have shown, that lateral violence, nurse-on-nurse, has been one of the highest incidence of violence within the workplace. Also, statistics have shown that lateral violence has one of the most emotional impacts on an individual. This will be further discussed below. For these reasons, it is important for healthcare workers to validate the detrimental effects violence can have in the workplace, and be prepared to combat and prevent workplace violence.
Everyone experiences anger at some point in their life. We all have those topics that if it gets brought up we automatically go into our defense mood, whether it be sex, religion or politics . We all have had those skeletons in our closets that we don’t like to bring out. Structural violence is the way in which a social structure will harm people by not providing, by limiting or by barring people from receiving basic needs. Structural violence impacts people on the bottom rung of society. People who live in poverty or are not considered being of a high social standing. This could be because of a person’s age, sex, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or any other aspect that makes them different from the majority of the population or different from what people consider to be the norm. However, structural violence does not necessarily need the majority of the population to define it, it can manifest by a few people in the country or out making decisions for the populace.

Violence is defined as the use of excessive physical force, which causes or has obvious potential to cause harm or destruction to an individual. Violence in sports comes in many forms, and divides into social and cultural factors related to the sport ethic, gender ideology, the dynamics of social class and race, and the tactics used in sports. Violence in sports has gone too far because sports violence has become so severe in sports, that players are injured each years. However, in sports some violence has become entertaining for the fans and fans would begin their own violence around with other fans that support opposing teams to win. The violence in sports can cause severe casualties from collisions to concussions that may result in long-term mental or physical damage.
With the increase in society taking a stance against violence, sports has become an area where some feel that the violent acts such as the hitting and fighting that occurs should be eliminated. It is very difficult to change the way that a game is played because people have been playing it that way for years. The violence in sports needs to be eliminated because of the extreme cases that continue to haunt many of the leagues and the players themselves.
