Upon listening to the song Las Abajeñas by Mariachi Cobre, it was immediately recognized as a Mariachi by the unique sound. Starting of with trumpets, the band of instrumentals consisting of what sounded as violins and guitar or vihuela, immediately followed. It was upbeat and fast and there was a group of singers harmonizing the lyrics. What stuck out the most to me was what sounded like the guitar. Once, the guitar started playing, it was a repetitive beat for the duration of the song. It created the bass for the song, and made it very easy to dance to. The vihuela on the other hand, can be heard playing along to the same rhythm of the lyricals as well as the violins. The violins and trumpets can be heard on and off throughout the song.
Listening to Mariachi Oro de Mi Tierra made me realize the importance of Mariachi music. I never have truly appreciated the art, history, or even culture of music till now. Watching them perform made me happy to be part of Mexico, and have them representing us a whole. Mariachi truly brings people together in a fun and entertaining way. They made me appreciate their traditional outfits and instruments. I am very happy I go to have this experience, and will love to attend more concerts like these. In this piece, two male musicians took turns during the performance to sing their parts. It starts off slow, as opposed to most of the music played that afternoon. During the middle of the piece, the guitarron continued strumming while Stacy Lopez, the vihuela player, made noises that sounded as if the vihuela itself was being struck. “Para Que Me Haces Llorar” soon came to a close; at least, it sounded like it was. As immediately as that song ended, the next piece started just as quickly and it had a song that had a familiar rhythm- and sure enough, it was the song “Stand by Me” but in Spanish. This part starts off with violins being plucked and with a calmer tone with a pace that builds up. Later on, all the musicians snapped their fingers as one of the singers were singing. The overall theme of “Abuela Invents the Zero” is treat your family with respect. In Abuela Invents the Zero is a girl doesn't respect her grandmother. In paragraph 14 it says “ I Realized to my horror that my grandmother is lost…. I am so embarrassed that even the woman sitting next to me is shooting daggers my way… i would rather like her to disappear. I just know on monday that my friends and my enemies will have a lot of senile grandmother jokes to tell in front of me…. The lady sitting next to me makes a big deal about getting up and getting abuela (ortizes , 14). This shows that no matter what people say or think that you shouldn't be embarrassed of your family. And that everyone has their own opinion and it shouldn't affect your relationship
A student should never be denied the right to learn and become successful because of a different skin color, or because they speak a different language. “No saco nada de la escuela” by Luis Valdez is a play that discusses the racism in schools. The play starts with students going to elementary school and then ascending to middle school and college. At the beginning the students were not aware of what racism really was because of their innocence. However, the teacher that they had was very racist and bullied the students of color. That experience made the other kids realize that not everyone was the same and because of color or language they should be treated differently. There are five different students who take part of this play, two of those students were white, and there were two Chicanos and one black. That is great diversity of cultures. The teacher that the students have in elementary school was an example of the other professors they were going to have throughout their school years. Very arrogant and not understanding of the minority students. Their teachers were not really interested in teaching the minorities and always showed her discontent of having students of color. Their teachers didn’t believe that students who were part of a minority should be placed in the same classroom as the white students. Maybe that was because they didn’t know the potential a minority student could have. One Chicano student named Francisco never denied his roots and became very successful. He had many obstacles in his learning environment, but at the end he becomes a great example of perseverance. Francisco is the student who I think showed the greatest development in the play. He had to deal with racism all the time, but that didn't stop ...
In a complete Mariachi group today there are as many as 6 to 8 violins, 2 trumpets, and a guitar, which are all standard European instruments. Then there is a high-itched, round-backed guitar called the vihuela, which when strummed in the traditional manner gives the mariachi its typical rhythmic vitality; a deep voiced guitar called the guitarr'o which serves as the bass of the ensemble; and a Mexican folk harp, which usually doubles the base line, but also ornaments the melody.
Music comes in many shapes and forms, and has been a magical element of inspiration and encouragement throughout time. The art of music derives from many different things, such as culture and traditions. One such type of music is mariachi music, deriving from Mexican culture and traditions. Mariachi music is often an upbeat rhythm, consisting of a band of up to six to eight violins, two trumpets and a guitar. Unlike modern music and other music bands alike, mariachi bands lack in numbers when it comes to band size. Though they are small, their music brings great significance and life to the places they perform and the people that they touch with their joyous music. In this paper, I will be comparing the culture and style of mariachi music to twentieth century modern music.
Mariachi has become the face of Mexican culture, and truly represents the music of Gonzales’ people. It is played in almost every occasion including funerals, weddings, quinceneras, parties, and marches. Gonzales explains this by saying, “Our art, our literature, our music”; He elaborates by naming mariachi under these categories. The author recognizes the significance of this music in his background. In one article, Collins states that “the only thing more Mexican than tequila is the mariachi” (Collins 1998). These words capture how immersed mariachi is in the author’s mores, therefore giving him purpose in mentioning it. Not only does mariachi define Mexican culture, it defines the beauty and soul of tradition.
Tino Villanueva was born on December 11, 1941 in south-central Texas in a town known as San Marcos, where both of Villanueva’s parents worked as migrant field workers which embarrassed him (Tino Villanueva Biography). Although his parents were identified as Mexican, many people deemed Tino Villanueva has “Chicano”.
When noticing a person who wears a similar clothes everyday, one may wonder what their intentions behind their attire is. In Isabel Allende’s story “Simple Marie” featured in The Stories of Eva Luna, the clothes are taken in a figurative sense just as much as in a literal function. Just as clothes are made to cover up one's physical body, clothes can be interpreted as a covering of one’s soul and true identity. Although, not very evident on the surface of the story, one can discover the intentions of Maria, by correlating the situation to her attire. The symbolism that Allende creates within the clothing of Maria illustrates a deeper sense to her vulnerability and reasoning within the situations of her life.
Chicago Illinois on December 20th of 1954 was the birthplace of Sandra Cisneros. Her father is Alfredo Cisneros, a Mexican immigrant in the United States from Mexico City and her mother is a Mexican-American from ILLIONOIS. The couple had seven children and Sandra Cisneros is the only daughter in between six brothers, reason why she grew up as a lonely child but developing in her inner self the contribution to be a writer (Herrera-Sobek 2011, 9). In the fifties and sixties, the working-class Cisneros family moved many times because Alfred Cisneros had a deep relationship with his mother in Mexico, Sandra Cisneros’s grandmother (Herrera-Sobek 2011, 9). These events made Cisneros feel in a limbo between the American culture and the Mexican culture.

According to his review of A Guide to Latin American Music by Gilbert Chase, Charles Seeger describes Chase’s description of the music culture, “The quantitative distribution of more than 2700 entries, which include some multiple listing, is interesting” (Seeger, 1946, 304). Chase explains a plethora of countries in Latin America and their specific musical features. Furthermore, thanks to his detailed work, the reader can see how many common features can be seen. Firstly, a common feature among all genres is the use of aerophones. The aerophones used could include, panpipes of various varieties, flutes, trumpets (as seen at the Boogat performance in Ottawa) and many more. Another common feature among all the genres is a strong rhythmic presence. In essentially all Latin American music, a steady, metrical rhythmic quality can be heard keeping the music energetic and easy to follow. To keep the rhythm, another common feature to Latin American culture is the drum. Most commonly found in the Afro-Latin genre, as a result of influence from African culture, can be seen throughout Latin America. A popularized western form of this type of music, is that of mariachi. Finally, Latin American culture is known for its vibrancy in their music.
