Since the 8th century BC, poets have been writing ekphrastic poems in an attempt to amplify, verbalize, and interpret different works of art. These poems form a connection between word and image, and in the process, often expand upon the artist’s original intentions. This is the technique that William Carlos Williams uses in his poem, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, that describes the painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by Pieter Bruegel. The painting depicts a landscape of working laborers who are too occupied to notice Icarus fall into the sea. The poem describes this scene vividly, while emphasizing the apathy shown among tragic demise. He purposely uses the prefix “-un” on the word, “unsignificantly”, in an alliteration with “unnoticed” to emphasize the meaningless death that Bruegel depicts. His alliterations are vigilantly used to effectively convey Breugel’s vision of Icarus’s fall. In addition to alliterations, William’s continues the use of careful wording, evident in his syntax. He begins the poem with the stanza, “According to Brueghel / when Icarus fell / it was spring” (1-3), to not only directly credit Breugel for this interpretation, but to introduce Icarus to the scene. Professor Mary Ann Caws suggests, “the distancing of the event at the outset, marks the edge of the text, its entrance, all the more perceptible and significant as it responds to the way in which legend enters the text” (Caws 325). When Icarus enters the text, his fall is immediately revealed. Williams chooses this placement to contrast with the “whole pageantry of the year” (Williams 6-7) that continues to function even after his descent. His fall, the introduction to the poem, is distinctly different from the lively world that Williams describes for the remainder of the poem. An example of imagery used to enhance the quality of a story can be found in Leyvik Yehoash’s poem “Lynching.” In this poem, the imagery that repeatably appears is related to the body of the person who was lynched, and the various ways to describe different parts of his person. The repetition of these description serves as a textual echo, and the variation in description over the course of the poem helps to portray the events that occurred and their importance from the author to the reader. This is important for people to remember because overconfidence leads to an over-inflated ego and an excessive amount of pride, which weakens people and their relationships with others. People like this find it difficult to reach out and think it’s below them to ask for help or want help.

The opening of the poem gives a clear message that something is severely wrong. A pod cracks with barely any resistance so the comparison to the skin is a unreserved statement outlining how easily the skin is. There is obviously a drought or a vast undersupply of water. On the seafloor, we are told, a corpse of "thy father" (Imogen) lies (l. 1). The poem instantly then begins to paint the setting of his watery grave with images that the reader is then almost able to see. "Of his bones are corals made;/Those are pearls that were his eyes" (ll. 2-3) presents two images in quick succession, as our minds latch on to the idea of vibrantly colored coral and milky pearl. William Blake is a poet most noted for the engravings that accompany his works of poetry. These engravings included with the poems help to depict the meaning of the poems. However, at times the engravings he includes with his poem can lead to complications for the interpreter of the poem. There are a multitude of variations of the same engraving that accompany a poem, all of them originals; some of these engravings compliment the poem, while others complicate the poem. One example of this occurrence, where one engraving may compliment the poem and the other complicates it, is in William Blake’s work “The Ecchoing Green” which can be found in Blake’s Songs of Innocence. The important thing to recognize is that regardless of whether the poem is further complicated or simplified because of the image, the poem and its accompanying image are still evoking thought, and discussion from the reader.
