One approach to decision making for two groups that have competing agenda’s is to form a partnership council. For the past two years, I have been facilitating the Labor Management Partnership Council. Using techniques like brainstorming, nominal group technique, and muli-group technique, which are all facilitation tools used to help the group form a decision. The partnership council is where union representatives headed by the Union President, and management representatives headed by the Chief Negotiator have formed a council. This council has a goal of discussing and resolving issues that affect the interest of both the union and management, heading off any grievances before they are made. When organizational policies are being written,
they are presented to the partnership council for discussion, making sure these local polices do not violate the bargaining agreement. When the policies are found to be fair, the group then discusses ways to implement these polices across the organization. Although sometime this council gets heated during the discussions, overall because of the relationships that have formed, the group tends to be civil with each other. This is due to the fact that both management and union have the same overall interest of taking care of employees and loyalty to the organization.

I believe both teams prioritized “winning” over fulfilling their initial objectives. Therefore, I better understood how both teams suffered under pressure during the negotiation because they realized they could no longer rely on a zero-sum strategy. Moreover, I realized how important team cohesiveness is to the bargaining process. Both the union and management lacked basic cohesiveness among their team members and consequently exacerbated the contentious and emotional environment that they created during the negotiation. Nevertheless, under these circumstances I believe the union and management ultimately reached an adequate proposal that satisfied both sides of the bargaining table.

Proactive management of the decision-making process can minimize the threat of groupthink compromising the quality of decisions. Managers can place importance of having a wide variety of options and idea brought to the table. Encouraging employees to thoroughly analyze all aspects of the options, from the moral and ethical implications, to the response they can expect from their opposition. With each decision appoint one or more group member to play devil’s advocate to the suggested options, ask that person to analyze and make a case against each of the suggestions (Sims & Sauser, 2013). Rotate this position throughout the group so that one person is not refuting the groups ideas consistently. Continually encouraging and rewarding contrasting views can hedge the complacency groups fall into after working together for periods of time. Management should be active listeners in the decision-making process being careful to not assert their preference towards a certain option to avoid the group conforming to the preferences of their superiors before the options are fully analyzed (Rose, 2011). There are five major bargaining style: accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, compromising and competing. While each person has a natural negotiation style, it also a learned process. The author’s of this paper spent a few days observing the various decision making processes used in their work environments. Each observed that no single decision making process is the only process used in his or her place of work. While there was a vast amount of different decision making processes used, it appears that data gathering is used by each place of employment. Employers also used surveying and another technique designed to build individual support. Dione’s employer uses various charts and tables to gather date prior to making decisions. These charts are used to track the progress of individuals and teams, progress is monitored and changes can be made based on the information gathered. Natacha’s employer has an organized plan of correctly identifying the problem, then gathering data and following up with meetings to ensure proper action is taken. Janelle’s employer uses surveys to gather information. Surveying is done at two important key times, once in the beginning of a change and then again a little later. This allows managers to assess the positive and negative of the situation and check for improvement. Stephanie’s employer uses a process of meeting with certain individual’s to get acceptance of the idea.
Disputes or conflicts can arise in any workplace, family home, or institution and they exist when one or more parties disagree with each other’s views and require the help, support, or service of a third party person to find a resolution. A fair and balanced conflict resolution process is important for the most effective outcome between two or more parties. Advocacy and mediation are two of many conflict resolutions that can be used in order to solve a problematic situation. However, certain situations require the skills, processes, and procedures that are exhibited by one more than the other. In some scenarios there may be a need to use both conflict resolutions if one does not proceed accordingly. Understanding the circumstance of the situation is ideal in discovering which conflict resolution would allow parties to come to a mutual agreement or resolution.

Traditional literature in the field of labor relations has focused immensely on its benefit towards the employer and in the process equating it to working rules. This has been so despite the field being expected to cover the process of, labor management, union formation, and collective bargain; all which are anticipated to create a positive employer-employee relationship. This relationship is said to be positive if there exist a balance between employment functions and the rights of the laborer. Also important to note, is that this relation is equally important to the public sector as it is to the private one. Therefore, to ensure a mutually conducive labor environment exists, effective labor management process and inclusive negotiation program should be adopted (Mulve 2006; Walton, 2008).
The pluralist approach to industrial relations accepts that conflict is inherent in society and can be accommodated through various institutional arrangements. Pluralism recognizes the existence of more than one ruling principle and allows for different and divergent views from both management and trade unions, achieved through negotiation, concession and compromise. This approach to industrial relations reinforces the value and legitimacy of collective bargaining between management and trade unions as conflict-resolving and rule-making processes. This approach is found in businesses with a large number of employees, such as aa retail store chain or hotel chain.
