When I initially endeavored to cover La Belle et la Bête (2014) I thought it would be a great idea to watch the Jean Cocteau 1946 version as a companion piece. Alas, that never happened - because - life. I would say based on this viewing, I am determined to eventually give it a look. But for now, I'll stick to reviewing this version.
First a little background. I definitely have a mixed history with the story of Beauty and the Beast as both a source material and an adaptation. While I have not seen the Disney animated 'masterpiece' from 1991, I was more familiar with the late 1980s television version featuring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. Sadly I am old and remember it well. All this to say, that, I generally thought I knew the basics of

As I tucked in and watched this French language version, directed by Christophe Gans and starring Léa Sedyoux and Vincent Cassel (they of the title respectively), I found myself post-screening having to do some additional research about the story (published in 1740) as told by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.

In fact, let me go ahead and share with you (some who may also be similarly uninitiated) the synopsis which should adequately set the stage for the story:
The year is 1810. After the wreck of his ships, a financially-ruined merchant (André Dussollier) exiles himself in the countryside with his six children. Among them is Belle (the "beauty"), his youngest daughter.
One day, during an arduous journey, the merchant stumbles across the magical domain of the Beast (Vincent Cassel), who sentences him to death for stealing a rose.
Feeling responsible for the terrible fate which has befallen her family, Belle decides to sacrifice herself and take her father's place. At the Beast's castle, it is not death that awaits Belle, but a strange life in which fantastical moments mingle with gaiety and melancholy.
They learn about each other, taming one another like two strangers who are total
Standing out and being different can be very difficult because of the people and the world around us. Belle--from Beauty and the Beast--does not follow the ordinary lifestyle of the villagers. She wants more than just the same old boring routine in the village that her whole life has been about. The movie Beauty and the Beast is transcendental because it encourages that at heart the individual is a good person, self reliance, and trusting your intuition.
... need for hard labor but as they move to the country, Beauty has to learn to work alongside her future brother-in-law and do heavy work. She also moves away from her studies and turns to helping her family progress. After her year away from her family, she physically grows into a woman. She also finds herself dependant of the Beast rather than of her family as would a child.
Set in France in 1904, the stage is a French bar called the “Lapin Agile”, with the action of the plot involving the characters who come into the bar and their relationship to time as well as each other. The script is an abstract look at the chance meeting of historical
It is my intention to compare the book, Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos, to its modern movie version, Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. I intend to examine how the original French text was modified in reference to plot, character, morals/values, and themes. I also plan to discuss how these transformations change the meaning of the story and reflect different cultural/historical contexts. There are some major differences between these two works, if only because of when they were written.
Everyone grew up hearing them and reading them as we absorb lessons from some of our favorite characters. Fairy tales send a message out to children to teach them right from wrong and helps them decide what kind of person they want to grow up to be. In “Beauty and the Beast”, by Jeanne-Marie Leprince De Beaumont and “The Pig King” by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, the two stories share a similar story and similar behavior and mannerism in the girls. The girls were all calm and respectful as they helped break the chains of their loved ones’ curse. However, the two stories did differ a bit and had two different attitudes from the princes. The beast remained calm and collected while the pig king caused mess and murder as they found their soul mate and lived happily ever
The movie revolves around a 1632 French missionary, Father LaForgue (Lothaire Bluteau) or Black Robe as the Indians referred to him. He traveled to North America to attempt to “save the savages on the new land”. His mission leads him to a Canadian settlement and an Algonquin tribe. There he is first introduced into the Indian religion, culture, and practices. This is also where his first major shock occurs, when he encounters a Frenchman, Daniel (Aden Young), having sex with the Algonquin chief's daughter, Annuka(Sandrine Holt). Shortly after, Father LaForgue decides to accompany a small group of Algonquin Indians on a...
The story begins with the Marquise de Merteuil corresponding with Vicomte de Valmont regarding a luscious new act of ‘revenge’, as she describes it, against the Comte de Gercourt. The young Cecile de Volanges has just come home from the convent and her marriage to Gercourt has been arranged. However, before he can wed the innocent child, Merteuil proposes Valmont ‘educate’ her, thus spoiling Gercourt’s fancy for untarnished convent girls. Valmont is uninterested in such an easy seduction and is far more aroused by the thought of lulling The Presidente’ de Tourvel, the very epitome of virtue, into submission. And so the tale unfolds.
Our religion and imaginary worlds class may focus on topics from the past, but it also applies to the present and future. After learning where things originate from, how to analyze and understand the meaning of imaginary worlds, now I can apply this knowledge to anything. Our modern world is full of media that we can apply our new understandings to, such as: songs, photos, social media, movies and more. In March, 2017, a recent release, a second Beauty and the Beast movie came to theaters. This film portrays the original Disney classic in a new light with more background stories, more life-like characters and some more magic.
Throughout the movie The Beauty and The Beast Disney presents a classic fairytale, but when seen in a different perspective it demonstrated that not everything is as it seems. Belle is affected by multiple disorders starting with Introversion, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia as well as Stockholm Syndrome. However, with psychoactive drugs and extensive therapy Belle can be treated to allow her to progress prevent a relapse in her daily
They took the kids they saw away from the Huguenot families; this happened to Pierre’s brother Henri. First they mix up the child’s words, then they take them away to learn in a Catholic school. Then when Pierre tried to see his Grand-pere, guards search him and arrest him, for having a secret note. They put him in La Lanterne or the prison for Huguenots. Were he was put in a cell with his dad. The tried him the next day and if he gave up his religion then he and his family would live; if not then him and his family either go to the galleys or jail. Well his dad rushed in and he bargained with the priest for Henri. So they left free, but had to eav all their belongings dress like peasants and escape the city. They get out on a boat and signal a coming boat; by pulling the flag up and letting it drop three feet. The boat floated over to them and let them on board, unfortunately, this boat was going to the West Indies not America. So when darkness fell they snuck back on the boat and went to London. After some time the king declared that he
In beauty and the beast we have for the first time a female character that is different and “ Belle likes herself and trust her own judgment” (Henks, Umble and Smith 1996, p. 237), and refuse what was planned for her. Belle was the first character not to fall in love from the first sight and occupies almost 80 percent of the movie. She has a better control on her life and choose her own destiny and she was powerful enough to save her father’s and the beast’s lives. And this relation represents a power-with the male character. The problem was that at the end, Belle ended up being one typical princess and being again the perfect girl that live with her prince happily ever

As she was packing her bags, Belle thought about the changes that had occurred over the last few years. Things were never the same once the Enchantress lifted the curse and the Beast became his former self once again. Not only did his dashing looks return, but so did his attitude. Adam slowly transformed back into the arrogant, self-centered, and cruel boy that he once was. He started to point out Belle’s peculiarities instead of appreciating them. He wanted everything to be perfect, and Belle was not willing to fit herself into that mold. Walking out she realized what the real problem was – she was never in love with Prince Adam, she was in love with the Beast. She fell for the insecure and quirky man who just wanted to love and be loved.
A person can take a story and look at it from many ways. Fairy tales represent the transformation of young people. Beauty is transformed into a young woman; she passes through the stages successfully and in turn is able to love. Every story teaches a lesson and in this case more than one lesson is taught. Not only is the lesson of sexuality and maturity taught, an even more important lesson is taught. Beauty and the Beast shows that true love comes from within the inside and if it is meant to be it will prevail.
