Pecans are one of my preferred snacks. I have always favored pecans over any other type of nut. Even as a young child I remember snacking on delicious pecans. Living in the south has allowed me to appreciate the natural growing pecan trees. My grandparents have two amazing pecan trees in their front yard. One of my favorite brands of pecans is Planters. Planters is a company owned by a much larger company by the name of Kraft Heinz. In finding that some companies do not create their products with environmental health or human health in mind, I concluded that I should inquire into Kraft Heinz production of pecans. I decided a good place to start would be at the beginning. Planters was created in 1906 by Obici and his friend Mario Peruzzi. The company was founded in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. The company started out producing only peanuts but has since grown to include many different varieties of nuts. Obici had a large plant built in 1913 in Suffolk, Virginia. By 1930 Planters stores began opening up around the United States. In 1961, Standard Brands, Inc. bought Planters. Standard Brands later in 1981 merged with Nabisco to become the Nabisco Brands. Then in 2000 Kraft Foods bought Nabisco Brands which included Planters. In 2015 Heinz bought …show more content…
The scientific name for pecans is Carya illinoinensis, and the nuts are identified as tree nuts. Pecans are the only nut native to North America. Pecans are known as Carya pecan or as hickory nuts. Pecans are grown in the United States Midwest region, south, south-west. They are produced outside of the United States in Mexico, South Africa, Israel, and Australia. The word pecan is a Native American word paccan meaning “hard-shelled nut.”. I double checked the meaning with dictionary.com and found that paccan is from the Native American tribe known as the Algonquians (“Pecan”). The pecan was an important addition to Southern Native American

“For the first time in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals, from the moment of conception until death.” Why do people consciously consume unhealthy, processed foods which big corporations in America distribute? These foods can lead to potentially harmful affects on the human body. So why are these risky products sold and consumed? The main reasons are because processed foods taste great and companies make large profits from these unwholesome products. General Mills is the 6th largest food company in the world, and uses genetically modified ingredients, preservatives, and artificial flavors in their products. The product that will be analyzed will be the tasty, mouthwatering breakfast favorite, Reese’s Puffs.
The American chestnut was not only an important food source for almost all living organisms of the Eastern, North America, but it was very important in providing housing and furniture and numerous other wooden necessities. The tree possessed rot resistant properties and strait grained wood which were valuable in buildings and many other applications. Its enormous trunk rose one-hundred feet into the canopy of the forest. Diameters of five feet have been recorded and many photos of the tree show greater trunk girths. The tree was able to produce its eatable fruit within seven years of germination. It was said to be truly treasured by early Americans.
The founhder of the company, Godfrey Keebler, started with jus a small bakery in Philadelphia, PA in 1853. During the next two generations, local bakeries popped up around the country, including Strietmann, Hekman, Supreme and Bowman. With the introduction of cars and trucks (carrying the Keebler logo), bakery goods could be distributed beyond the neighborhood and regional distribution began.
including wild strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. The roots of cattail plants and water lilies were eaten. Persimmons, cranberries, and wild plums were also eaten. Nuts such as walnuts, butternut, hickory nuts and chestnuts were gathered in early fall. Oak trees supplied many acorns, but acorns had a bitter taste. Lenape women discovered that they could remove the bitter taste by roasting the acorns or by crushing these nuts in a wooden mortar and rinsing them in hot water. Leached acorns were cooked into a porridge, or pounded into flour to make bread. Cooking oil was made from nuts by crushing and cooking them in boiling water. The nut oil floated to the top of the water where it was scooped out with spoons made from turtle shells or clam shells. The nut oil was stored in bottles or clay pots until
The pecan, which was previously named Hicoria, but is now known as Carya illinoensis, grows on a tree that is typically 75 to 100 feet in height (Natchitoches Pecans). The nuts are rounded and can be grouped together at up to 100 nuts per pound. It was evident that the origination was that of an Asian tree species. The tree species had first appeared in North America before the first humans crossed the Bering Strait in about 10,000 B.C. (Jones, 2013) Archaeological evidence reveals that the fossil remains discovered along the major streams and irrigation canals in Texas and the northern part of Mexico, indicate that it was the birthplace of the pecan species. (Murray, Pizzorno, 2005).
The Pecan tree is a native tree to North America. When early European settlers traveled across the sea to settle in the New World, they found pecan trees located in numerous places in this new land. Since then, the pecan tree has become one of the most important orchard species in terms of acreage. Indians began using pecans almost 8000 years ago in what is now Texas. The first budded pecan trees were produced in Louisiana in the mid-1800s and orchards have been established throughout the Southern states. The first recorded shipment of pecans to England was documented in 1761, by Spanish and European explorers (Anderson and Crocker, 2004). In 1917, a commercial shipment of pecans came out of Georgia and since then, Georgia has been the leading producer of pecans. Although Georgia is the leading producer, in some years collections of pecans from wild trees in Oklahoma and Texas surpass the production in Georgia.

ConAgra’s Foods mission of "one company growing by nourishing lives and finding a better way today, one bite at a time (ConAgra Foods, 2010/29/07)," is dedicated to providing consumers with good quality food that tastes great and provides good nutrition at a reasonable cost. ConAgra was founded in 1919 by Frank Little and Alva Kinney, who consolidated four grain mills as Nebraska Consolidated Mills. ConAgra financed the development of the Duncan Hines brand of cake mixes in 1951 to make flour more profitable. But in 1956 they sold their assets in Duncan Hines to Procter & Gamble, and 15 years later in 1971 Nebraska Consolidated Mills changed its name to ConAgra. Several successful and lucrative investments resulted in ConAgra Foods being the largest processed foods business in America (ConAgra Foods, 2010/29/07). Along with the...
The Wonderful Pistachios commercial, Dominatrix, starts off in a wide shot bright white room with a black chair. A dominatrix wearing a leather black and green suit walks into the room, she has a single pistachio in her hand and places it down on the chair, she backs away and with her whip cracks the pistachio open. While she's doing that a male voice over says "Dominatrix do it ... on command". Towards the end of the commercial a happy jingle is played while the male voice over says "Wonderful pistachios, get cracking".
Almonds were only available from August to November, and things like pumpkin seeds are variable when pumpkins are ripe - in the fall. (source). This is important, because while modern society has the availability of eating them year round, the oils in nuts and seeds are particularly sensitive to light and heat. Nuts are exposed to a lot of both of these in order to store them.
It wasn’t until World War 2, however, that hazelnuts found their way into the bakery treat that is known today as Nutella. Due to a shortage of cocoa, Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts in his bakery products because they were plentiful in his hometown in Italy (8). Nutella was first produced in block form, but was later turned into a spreadable paste. Nutella spread to America in 1983 and soon became popular worldwide.
In addition, other kinds of nut and seed butters can be studied. For example: almond butter, cashew butter, hazelnut butter, sesame butter and sunflower butter.
The company was formed in 1965 with the merger of Pepsi-Cola Company and Frito-Lay, Inc. PepsiCo grew bigger with the 1998 acquisition of Tropicana and the 2001 merger with Quaker Oats.
