Self-Reflection Summary
The reason I chose this particular area of research is that peanut butter is an extremely popular food choice worldwide as it is affordable and nutritious; and I also love to eat it. However, the number of brands and the choices within the brand range make it complicated for the consumer and myself to choose the most nutritious option. Prior to this research I did not understand the nutritional content of the food I ate.
On every food product there is a table of nutritional information that states the exact health contents of the food. There is also a list of ingredients that provides consumers with details regarding the food. In today’s times, consumers are flooded with choices of seemingly similar products. I do not know the difference in nutrition amongst these products. Food labelling is often misleading and deceptive, and I feel as if I have been left in the dark, but also that there is a hidden shadow side that may exist as consumers’ ignoracne may lead to naive incorrect choices.
The process of completeing my research task taught me many valuable lessons. In compiling the literature review I learnt how to filter information, as well as how to use citations. The method and results section showed me how to transfer information from labels into suitable graphs and tables, in order to make comparisons and analysises. I learnt how to critically examine graphs and tables, and draw accurate and educated conclusions when completing the discussion section. Through this project, I also realised the importance of reflecting back on any limitations encountered inorder to learn from your mistakes, and find improvements for further research. In addition, I learnt how to reference sources correctly.

... If further research is to be done, I recommend that it should explore and compare other kinds of peanut butters. Organic peanut butter, creamy peanut butter, sugar-free peanut butter, sodium-free peanut butter and natural peanut butter could be investigated.
In addition, other kinds of nut and seed butters can be studied. For example: almond butter, cashew butter, hazelnut butter, sesame butter and sunflower butter.
Furthermore, different brands of peanut butters can be researched. For example: Black Cat, Skippy, Woolworths, Pick ‘n Pay no name brand and Reese’s Peanut Butter.
Another limitation was only peanut butter labels were compared in detail, and that consumer’s preferences were not explore. This research could be improved by including surveys that look at different aged and gendered peoples’ preferences of peanut butter and their reasons for their choice.
Adverts often mask foods that are unhealthy by emphasising its positive nutritional features – such as dietary fibre and protein. From 1997 to 2008 the number of American children that have some form of nut allergy has tripled. Peanut allergies are considered one of “Big 8” food allergies that accounts for 90% of allergies which includes 3 million Americans out of the 21 million Americans that suffer from some form of allergy. For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. More and More people are becoming concerned about what they eat, especially if they consume food products that are manufactured in food industries. However, it is hard to know what exactly you are consuming if food industries provide false nutrition content and mislead consumers by placing false advertisements on the packaging. When a company produces a product that contains misleading label, consumers are not receiving complete information about the food they are eating which could lead to health issues including allergies and problems with diabetes.
There once was a time where words like "light" and "low-fat" on food packages that had no nutritional meaning. As a result, shoppers were often led to believe they were buying products that were more helpful than they really were. Nutrition panels on labels were also confusing and hard to read. But the Australia New Zealand Authority (ANZFA) changed all that. Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. For a moment, imagine you are a very health conscious person. You start the mornings off with a brewed cup of coffee, a newspaper, and your favorite cereal. The second ingredient is honey, another that reinforces your feelings of responsible eating. Ingredients three, four, and five are foreign to you. They read soy lecithin, niacin, and high fructose corn syrup. Now the first two you have a good feeling about. Soy is a good source of protein in place of many meats and niacin must be one of those vitamins or minerals the food tycoon General Mills boasted about on the box. However, the latter of the three is what prompts you to do some research on your computer. The results yield studies and illustrations which surprise you. “From crackers to raisins, cans of soda to cans of soup, high fructose corn syrup is in virtually every list of ingredients. Even for consumers that are vigilant about steering clear of it, it’s hard not to avoid” (Mangano). As you finish your last bite of cereal it does not seem as satisfying as the first. Uncertainty is the lingering taste and you wonder what high fructose corn syrup really is, why it is in all of the foods you eat, and if it could affect your health negatively.
