Legends say Konohana Sakuyahime, the Japanese goddess of all volcanoes, prevents destructive eruptions. This is somewhat ironic because Sakurajima, a volcano named after the goddess, is now one of the most active and deadly volcanoes in the world. Sakurajima is very unique in location, type, and impact.

Located on Kyushu Island, Japan in Asia, Sakurajima is near the city of Kagoshima. The volcano is approximately 3.5 miles away from the city, separated by a small slit of the Pacific Ocean. The island in which the volcano is located in is still accessible by the public and is an attraction for tourists. The volcano’s absolute location is 31.5833° N, 130.6500° E. The lava flowing from these types of volcanoes mostly cools and hardens before spreading a great distance because of its high viscosity. The elevation of Sakurajima is 1,117 meters, or 3,665 feet, while the circumference of it is 50 km, or 164042 feet.
