Volcanoes have always been a mysterious wonder of the world. Volcanoes have shaped the landscape and the very ground that we all live on. People have written stories of their disastrous eruptions, and painted their marvelous shapes on canvas. The essay will outline some of the more famous volcanoes and how they have impacted are history. Mount Vesuvius that destroy the great city of Pompeii, Krakatoa they spewed deadly ash on small village town, and Mount St. Helen, the only volcano in my own country to every erupt during my own time period. Mount Vesuvius is located in the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. Its Latitude and Longitude is 40.8224° N, 14.4289° E. It is a stratovolcano and has a height of 1277 meters (1490 feet) and base of 48 kilometers (30 miles). Mount Vesuvius has erupted over 30 times and has a repose time that can last for months or even years between eruptions. Its eruptions are explosive and is dominated by pyroclastic flows. The eruption materials are usually an ash cloud with lightening that spews out dense ash falls. The lava can shoot up to 4km into the air. The most famous eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius were in 79 A.D. which destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The cities were covered in 20 feet of volcanic debris. The estimated death toll was over 1000 people. people were covered in ash that preserve the people in town for 1000 of years. Krakatoa is stratovolcano located on a Indonesian island. The latitude and longitude is 6.1021° S, 105.4230° E. The elevation is 813 m (2667 ft.). It has a confirmed 10 eruptions with a repose time of 100 or more years. The eruptions are explosive that shoots out solidified lava, as well as volcanic ash. The eruptions are usually quite violent. The most famous eruption of Krakatoa was in 1883 that destroy most of the island along with the surrounding areas. This was the deadliest and most destructive volcano in human history. It was estimated that 36,000 people lost their life to this volcano eruption. The volcano eruption also created mega tsunamis that would kill additional people. Mount St.
Helens is located in Skamania County, Washington at a latitude and longitude 46°11′28″N 122°11′40″W. Mt. St. Helens is a stratovolcano volcano that has an elevation of 2,549m (8363 ft.). The last eruption was 36 years ago and has erupted numerous times within the last 100 years. The eruptions are explosive with ash and pyroclastic flows. Mt. Helens erupted on May 15, 1980 with a VEI 5 rating. It was the only large eruption to happen in the contiguous 48 states since 1915. Fifty-seven people were kill, along with several farm animals. Two hundred miles of land and trees were obliterated. This area is now called the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic
Monument. The volcanic eruptions listed above significantly changed how we think volcanoes work, as well as how we can predict future eruption. Good example of this is the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. Scientists knew for many months that Mt. St. Helen was going to erupt but how the volcano eruption was unprecedented. Shortly before the eruption a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit, shifting the volcano face along a landslide that spewed hot ash and stone up to 300 miles per hour. The ash covered three states and blackened Washington and cause black rain to fall. The shift caused an unpredicted hazard that caused human and animal casualties. The good thing that did come out of this eruption is that scientist can now prepare for these types of eruptions and hopefully will able to give enough warning in the hazard zone to save lives and property.
Sebastian Pether’s piece of work called The Eruption of Vesuvius (1835) combines the silver watery reflection of the moon with the hot red molten lava that is flowing down its mountainsides. Though during Pether’s generation he wasn’t the only one to paint the well-known Mount Vesuvius, Joseph Wright of Derby also painted 30 paintings of the volcano. This art piece is currently located at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The piece is oil media on panel that is framed with a beautifully designed border, where it is hanging on a wall in the one of the rooms, with a one-dimension view. The quality of the piece owes itself to the color and lighting, which captures your immediate attention and guides the viewer through the piece.
On the afternoon of 24th August 79 AD, a volcano called Mt. Vesuvius erupted, which resulted in destroyed lives of citizens, it was estimated that there were 10 to 12 thousand people who occupied the city .The cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and a few others were severely affected by the eruption. The cities are well known for its beautiful landscapes and its temperate climate.Pompeii is based in the south, close to Naples in the region of Campania in Italy. The eruption started a series of events such as pumice, rocks and ashes falling down and caused hot volcanic gases to rise high in the sky, people from around 100 miles away could see the event unfolding. The remains of Pompeii and other cities was frozen in time due to the pyroclastic surges
On May 18th, 1980, one of the most prominent volcanic eruptions in US History took place in the state of Washington. Mount St. Helens had been dormant for almost 100 years before March 15th. On this day, two months before the eruption several small earthquakes shook the earth. This indicated a magma buildup below the surface, and the first minor event that would lead to one of the greatest eruptions the US has ever known. Following the first set of earthquakes, “Steam explosions blasted a 60- to 75-m (200- to 250-ft) wide crater through the volcano 's summit ice cap and covered the snow-clad southeast sector with dark ash. Within a week the crater had grown to about 400 m (1,300 ft) in diameter and two giant crack systems crossed the entire summit area. Eruptions occurred on average from
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovalcano in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located 96 miles south of Seattle and 53 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon. The mountain is part of the Cascade Range. It is most famous for a catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980. That eruption was the most deadly and economically destructive volcanic eruption in the history of the United States. 57 people were killed, and 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways and 185 miles (300 km) of highway were destroyed. The eruption blew the top of the mountain off, reducing its summit from 9,677 feet to 8,364 feet in elevation and replacing it with a mile-wide horeshoeshaped crater.
The eruption on Mount Saint Helens has a specific cause and comes with many effects. A multifold of people would say that the “mountain looked like the site of an atomic blast” (Bredeson 30). That is a very accurate depiction as it took great power to inflict as much damage as it did. The reason for this impressive amount of force is that when magma is built up with pressure and an earthquake hits, the pressure gets magnified and the volcano explodes (Lewis). This is exactly what happened inside Mount Saint Helens. Furthermore, it has been revealed that “The earthquake that triggered the explosion was a 5.2 on the Richter scale” (Gunn 559). The earthquake to the magma can be compared as a match to gasoline. Even though the earthquake was not huge, the scale of the eruption was much greater than that of the earthquake (Gunn 560). The earthquake was only the trigger that allowed for more devastating things to occur. Thirteen hundred feet of the volcano were lost in the explosion followed by landslides, mudslides, and lava flows...
The first time I saw Mt. Rainier for myself, was last summer when my boyfriend and I drove to Washington. It was the most beautiful, peaceful looking mountain I have ever seen. However, underneath it's great beauty, it hides a deadly secret. Mt. Rainier is one of the most dangerous volcanoes that we have here in the United States. One of the reasons it is so dangerous is because of it's great beauty. People enjoy looking at it, and the area that surrounds it, so they have made their homes here. Mt Rainier is not the only volcano I am interested in, in fact this last summer I also went to Mt. St. Helens and Crater Lake. But it is the volcano I chose to research for this paper because it does have so much beauty and at the same time so much power. I already know the basics about volcanoes, how they form, the different types, etc., but I wanted to find out more about what would happen if this great volcano were to erupt, what type of eruption would it be, and how would it affect the people that live around it.
Stories about volcanoes are captivating. Myths come in different versions, but all of them are capable of capturing yours, and everybody’s imagination.
Mount Vesuvius and mounts St Helen's are both volcano's, but what are the differences and what are the similarities . That is a question i've been wondering how and when did they erupt . and there are a lot of similarities with the bout one. And they have an lot of differences as they both are stratovolcano
Mt. Saint Helens was a devastating volcano that not only caused many deaths and casualties near itself, but it also changed weather patterns, crop outcomings, and the history of america. Mt saint helens is located in the Cascade mountain range. It is in the county of Skamania, in the north-west corner of the state of washington. Mount St. Helens ripped 57 people from their daily lives and from their families.
1. 1. Mount Unzen, erupted in 1972. Its located in Japan near the Shimabara Peninsula. The earthquake accompanied by an eruption, triggered the collapse of the lava dome. Which then created lava deposits, that created a landslide. The landslide went through the nearby city of Shimabara. Then out to sea, creating a tsunami that tore through two cities and back to Shimabara. Approximately 15,000 people was killed, making it the deadliest volcano in Japan's history. Many of the deaths are due to the tsunami. The eruption caused Plants, animals and aquatic life to be threatened. However, Japans soil is rich, therefore the plants can grow back quickly. Other dangerous effect of this volcano are due to the ash that the wind carries to nearby countries and cities. When the ashes are inhaled it may cause illnesses.
This explosion was very big but wasn’t its last.“The cataclysmic explosion of Santa María in 1902 was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century.”(Jeannie A. J. Scott) This explosion impacted the mountain and the area around it. “ It devastated the surrounding landscape, and left a huge crater in the side of the mountain.”( Jeannie A. J. Scott). This explosion has damaged the mountain. ”Extrusion of the dome began in the center of the explosion crater created by Santa Maria's 1902 activity.”(WILLIAM I ROSE, JR.). This explosion was a major one in history. ”Flows, pyroclastic debris, and lahar materials directly associated with the Santa Maria composite cone occur on three sides of the dome.”(WILLIAM I ROSE, JR.). It has damaged itself and the area around it. Santa Maria is also near other volcanos and mountains. “The Central American volcanic arc runs through five countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (right). The Santa María / Santiaguito system lies at the northwest end of the arc, in Guatemala.”(Jeannie A. J. Scott). This large explosion of the volcano Santa Maria is intriguing and is a fascinating
There was a forum on one side of town, and temples on the other side. The day before Mount Vesuvius erupted, the people of Pompeii had held a festival for the fire god, Vulcan. Pompeii is located in Italy, about 17 miles away from Naples and it is 163 acres (about .25 miles) wide. Mount Vesuvius is a 4,203 feet tall stratovolcano. About 15,000 people lived in Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted. After the explosion of Mount Vesuvius, the whole city of Pompeii was covered in 13-20 feet of ash and volcanic rock. The city was not found until 1748. The bodies of 1,150 out of 2,000 dead people were found beneath the city when it was finally uncovered. 600 sheep also died in this
Now I’m going to ask the question, “What volcano eruption would you rather be in, Mount St. Helens, or Mount Vesuvius?” I’m sure you know the story of what happened to pompeii, but what about The volcano, Mount St. Helens that wiped out the city below it? Well if you don’t know the story of Mount St. Helens, I’m going to describe and compare what it was like compared to Pompeii.
while trying to help the residents of Pompeii. Today the type of eruption that Mount Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located in southern Italy, near the bay of Naples and the city of Naples. It is the only active volcano on the European mainland. Vesuvius rises to a height of 1277 m (4190 ft). Vesuvio (Vesuvius) is probably the most famous volcano on earth, and is one of the most dangerous.
