In "Kew Gardens," the narrator follows different visitors to the gardens, giving the reader brief snapshots of their lives through small descriptions as they reach the same flowerbed. The story begins with a description of the oval-shaped flowerbed. The flowers are red, yellow, and blue. They have petals that are heart or tongue shaped. As the petals fall to the ground, they stain the earth with these colors for a moment. Petals from the flowers soar through the sky in the summer breeze. The flowers' colors flash in the air. On this July day, men, women, and children walk through the gardens. As the people move through the gardens, their movements resemble butterflies. They zigzag in all directions to get a better view of the flowers.

Simon asks his wife, Eleanor, if she ever thinks about the past. He tells her that he is thinking about Lily and asks her if this bothers her. Eleanor says she doesn't mind. She tells him that everyone thinks about the past, especially in the Kew Gardens, a place that is filled with young couples that lie together under the trees. She says these couples are like ghosts of one's own reality. He explains that the memory of past love for him is tied to dragonflies and shoe buckles. Eleanor tells him that her memory of the Kew Gardens is of a kiss, 20 years ago. She and other little girls sat near the lake with their easels, painting pictures of the water lilies. She had never seen red water lilies before. Someone kissed her on the back of the neck. The kiss distracted her. She was unable to paint that afternoon because her hands were shaking. She allowed herself 5 minutes on the hour to think of the kiss. She says the kiss was precious, "the kiss of an old woman with a wart on her nose, the mother of all my kisses all my life." The younger of the two looks unnaturally calm. His gaze is fixed in the distance, ignoring the older man who is speaking. The older man has an uneven, shaky walk. His stance is like an impatient horse. He jerks suddenly as he talks continually. Between statements he smiles to himself and speaks again, as though the smile is the answer to his question. He is talking about the spirits of the dead. He says they are telling him about their experiences in heaven. He says that heaven was known by the ancients and with this new war happening, they are rolling between hills and thunder. The man talks about a machine and a widow, a woman dressed in black. He has caught sight of a woman in the distance dressed in purplish black. The man takes off his hat and places his hand on his heart. He hurries toward the woman, gesturing wildly. The young man, William, catches him by his sleeve. William distracts the older man by pointing out a flower. The man looks at it confusedly. He leans in close to the flower as if he is listening to a voice inside it. He talks about the forests of Uruguay. He says he visited these forests hundreds of years ago with the most beautiful woman in Europe. William moves the man forward, away from the flowerbed. William's face shows stoical patience. Literary devices are used by Sandra Cisneros throughout the vignette “The Monkey Garden”, to highlight the mood of the piece. For instance, Cisneros uses symbolism to encompass feelings of mysticality when she describes the Monkey Garden as a place the kids can go too “far from where our mothers could find us.”(95). The garden is symbolized as a haven, that can seemingly alleviate the characters problems. Cisneros also uses juxtaposition to further develop mystical emotions the in the audience. Seed, a book by Lisa Heathfield, applies the idea that knowledge is power, but ignorance is bliss through the character development of Pearl, the deep descriptions of the settings and ambiguity of Pearl’s knowledge on certain scenes. Seed’s narrative quality explores that knowledge does not always make one influential, however, not acquiring knowledge means not feeling conflicted.
The story opens by embracing the reader with a relaxed setting, giving the anticipation for an optimistic story. “…with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green (p.445).”

Although imagery and symbolism does little to help prepare an expected ending in “The Flowers” by Alice Walker, setting is the singular element that clearly reasons out an ending that correlates with the predominant theme of how innocence disappears as a result of facing a grim realism from the cruel world. Despite the joyous atmosphere of an apparently beautiful world of abundant corn and cotton, death and hatred lies on in the woods just beyond the sharecropper cabin. Myop’s flowers are laid down as she blooms into maturity in the face of her fallen kinsman, and the life of summer dies along with her innocence. Grim realism has never been so cruel to the innocent children.
One might think, based on the cultural importance of individualism in the United States, that a person can lead a successful life without any companions or loved ones. However, in The Bean Trees, author Barbara Kingsolver shows otherwise. Through the development of a flowering plant motif in this novel, the world is shown to be a place where people need others who love and care for them to live a fulfilling life. The motif of flowering plants develops meaning through the author’s continued use. There are two settings for this story. The first and main setting is an eye appealing garden next to Giovanni Guasconti’s room which is located in Padua, Italy. This garden is used in this story as a symbol for the Garden of Eden. The garden is described by Hawthorne in such a way that the reader can almost picture a garden that is alive with vibrant colors and an array of flowering plants and shrubs. In “The Flowers,” by Alice Walker, the flowers are used throughout the story to symbolize the beauty and naivety of childhood. In the beginning of the story the author shows the main character Myop walking down a path along the fence of her farm. Myop sees “an armful of strange blue flowers with velvety ridges…” The flowers are bright and colorful, reminding the reader of an innocent type of beauty often associated with them. This suggests the flowers were inserted in the story by Walker to reveal how young and innocent Myop appears to be. Later in the story, after Myop had discovered the dead body of a man who seemed to have been hung “Myop laid down her flowers,”. As Myop put down the flowers she was also putting down the last of her innocence.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves. Unlike “The echoing Green,” “The Garden of Love” uses the singular pronoun “I” (2 and 9). The use of the singular pronoun conveys that the speaker no longer has the close companionship that he felt he had as a child.
