Muhammad Ali once said, “The man who views the world at fifty the same as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.” Ali figured this out for himself as he was born into a black community by the name of Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, growing up he realised who he wanted to be, a Muslim by the name Muhammad Ali. A lot of people discover who they are all the time nowadays, the importance of self discovery now is very high as people are unaware of who they really are throughout a portion of their life. Keeper is telling Garnet to be who he is and that being a good Indian will come naturally with being a good human being. He shouldn’t modify who he is to fit in. Garnet thinks he needs to be the same as everyone outside of the reserve because he couldn’t even fake being a Indian when he knows nothing about their culture. Keeper believes that you should be you and your true identity will shine eventually. “This was the first time I had been confronted by my own phoniness and I just wanted outta there fast.” (26) Garnet is exposed about who he really is when Lonnie knew he wasn’t no Hawaiian.He now has accept that he’s an Indian, he now has to come to his senses and admit to it, and stop pretending to be someone who he is
