Junior Rowdy Hero

To be a hero, one must inspire hope in others, change their lives for the better, but all Junior did was crush his schools hopes, and kill his sister. One could argue that he changed Rowdy’s life, but they would know that to be false, because Rowdy was content to watch Junior succeed. Junior never managed to accomplish anything that positively changed the lives of those who needed it, and because of that, Junior cannot be classified as a hero.
The term “Hero” has been overused lately, ranging from neighborhood “heroes” who walk old ladies across the street, to good Samaritans who rescue cats from trees. That just doesn’t cut it, and neither does Junior. A hero is someone who is admired for his or her achievements. Heroes save lives, change lives for the better, and are generally selfless. While Junior is rather selfless, he lacks achievements which effect lives in a meaningful way, and when he does, it’s usually not in a good way. During the basketball …show more content…

They only had each other to rely on, and Junior just left him. This had to have devastated him, how could his only friend just leave him like that? However Junior felt content just talking about how Rowdy was the one who left him, and how terrible it was that he was the one being left behind, when in reality Junior tossed Rowdy to the side. This obviously strains their relationship, but all Junior did was complain. When they did finally come to terms, Rowdy still felt that he could not accomplish anything, that he was “…not nomadic.” and that “Hardy anyone on this rez is nomadic” [Alexie 229]. This shows that he gave up, and that he already accepted that he would spend his life in the rez. This is not something that a hopeful person would say, this is a cynical outlook on life, the result of constantly being abused by life.
