Is there really a hero in The Outsiders. A hero is someone who saved the life of one or many people by risking their own life. Johnny is one of those people. Johnny is a person who is very shy until he starts standing up for himself and does things he never thought he would do. Johnny is the hero because he didn’t just save the life of one but of multiple people,he would do anything for his buddies, and he listens and comprehends people that is a real hero.
Johnny is the hero because he saved the lives of multiple people by putting his own life at risk. One example is when Johnny and Ponyboy ran away. While they were running away Bob and his gang decided to jump Johnny and Pony for stealing their girls. They had Johnny on the ground beating him up and they were drowning Ponyboy. Johnny was really scared and he didn’t want Ponyboy to die so they grabbed the switchblade he had in his pocket and he killed Bob . Johnny saw that Pony was unhappy because he missed his brothers that were back home. Johnny thought that the only reason Pony was still there in the church with him was because he was the one who wanted to run away in the first place . Johnny finally decided to turn himself in because Pony hadn’t committed a crime and Johnny would be let of easy for saving the kids . Johnny would do anything for his buddies but he has a limit and I think that limit is girls. I don’t think that Johnny would of yelled at Dally if he wouldn’t of disrespected those girls the way he did. The death of Johnny is a noble death. He dies from saving children and also Ponyboy. His death means something. Near the end of the story, he is still looking out for Ponyboy, telling him to “‘stay gold’”(148) and writing him the letter. Ponyboy says “Johnny was right. He died gallantly” (154). He dies still thinking of other people, he dies a hero. Conversely, Dally dies selfishly and only looking out for himself. He dies under the street lamp, happy with how things turn out, while Johnny dies in a bed, scared and wishing he had done more. Ponyboy says ¨Dally didn't die a hero. He died violent and young and desperate¨ (154). He does not die peacefully like Johnny, he dies a harsh death, just because he breaks for not being a hero like Johnny. Stand up to the injustice unafraid of the strong enemy. Do the right thing even if you are weak. That is who we call a hero. Johnny could satisfy himself to save his friend. He could literally do anything to save his friend.
Some people would say that Johnny is not a hero because he killed Bob with a switchblade. Johnny could have went by Bob and pushed him off and run but instead, Johnny kills Bob and decides to run with Pony. That is hit and run but it would have been better if he had told the cops that he had killed a Soc named Bob that is why Johnny is not innocent. However Johnny is a hero because he saved his best friend, Phony, from being drowned by a Soc named Bob. This is a case of self defense because Johnny was saving himself and Pony from getting hurt by the Soc named Bob. Some people think Johnny is not a hero but this proves that he is a hero.
In the book The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, the lower-class, known as the Greasers, and the upper-class, known as Socs, deal with the animosity and daily struggles they have with each other. The novel focuses on the struggles and experiences with being an outsider to society and coping with the rich side of town through Ponyboy’s eyes. His life changes when tensions rise and many tragic things happen to the Greasers and Socs that will create agony in many but heroes in a few. The three topics addressed in this compelling novel are the fight between the rich and the poor, the power of friendship, and what it means to be a hero.

Yes, a hero is someone that stands up and tries to protect others from being harmed. In the book, The Outsiders, the Greasers proved to be the heroes of the story. It shows that no matter what your background is, you could always turn into a hero. They also showed that no matter how poor you are, you can still be a hero.The Greasers that I think showed bravery and fearlessness were: Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally.
Heroes. Everyone wants to be a hero, but sometimes, people lose sight of what a true hero really is. It does not have to be someone who flies around and saves innocent people from perilous monsters. I understand that I am going to attempt to keep Johnny out of jail because what he had done in my perspective was self defense. This happened in The Outsiders book. Hinton, S. E. The Outsiders. New York: Viking, 1967. Print. I feel that you may think that Johnny is guilty of homicide because he had killed Bob during the evening by the park. He had not attempted to kill him, he was using self defence, as the novel had stated in chapter 4, Johnny warns the socs that showed up that they were in a part of town that they were not supposed to be in but the socs ignored the warning and still provoked the fight. Later in chapter 4 it also informs us that the socs were starting to drown Ponyboy so Johnny had used his switchblade without really meaning to kill anyone. Johnny has informed me that he and Ponyboy Curtis were walking in the park in the evening and that a vehicle had shown up and some boys had gotten out and threatened them. These boys had pulled out a knife and threatened to use it against them. One of the boys then started to assault Johnny and another attacked Ponyboy. The one attacking Ponyboy then decided to move him to a fountain and tried to drown him. When Johnny realized what they were doing he had turned to them and pulled out a knife and flung at them without meaning to kill Bob. But keep in mind that Bob was drowning Ponyboy so this act was used in defense. I feel that Johnny is innocent because he was using self defense, but he should not have ran from the crime scene. Another thing in chapter 4 was that a little while later when Ponyboy came conscious again Johnny said, "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. “They might have killed you. Even though his family was violent with him, he was still there for me. He can also always count on me to be there for him. Out of all of the members of the gang Johnny and Ponyboy were the closest, because they were the youngest and also they were not as tough as the other boys. After Ponyboy got in a fight with Darry about being late at getting home, Ponyboy ran to the lot and told Johnny that they were running away. Without hesitation the two boys took off running. Johnny needed no explanation. He had a rough life at home and without the support from the gang he may have already killed himself. Johnny just wanted to be there and support his friend like they had been supporting him through everything. At many points throughout the novel Ponyboy teaches or shows Johnny something new. “You know Johnny said slowly “I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept, reminding me about them. It seems like they were never there before” (Hinton,78). When Johnny says that to Ponyboy is gives readers a glimpse of how Johnny having Ponyboy in his life makes it better. Another key point of their friendship in the novel is after Johnny kills the Soc. This is a key point because they run off to Jay Mountain to hide from the police and while they are there they discover more about each other and themselves. The boys are at that church for about a week before Dally came to check in on them and while they were inside that church they read Gone with the Wind. A hero can also be a person who fights for other people to help or save them. from their fears and fears. He opposes the villain - a person who does wicked or intentionally harm others in some way, emotionally or otherwise.
There is a hero in us all. A hero is someone who risks their own life to save or do good for others. Ponyboy is a hero because he risked his life to save children from a burning church. Johnny is a hero even though he killed someone it was to save his friend’s life but he also saved children from a burning church. Dally has been arrested, picks fights, and drinks, but when it comes to the people he is close with he has his soft spots for them. All bad boys have a good side.
Compared to regulated time of living, Pony and Johnny barely started to settle to life in at the church, when it was set ablaze. “It seemed to me that I had always lived in the church”. (Page 68) Ponyboy and Johnny had adjust to life at the old church, and it wasn’t too bad, it was alright for them. Around the time they started settling in, a terrible incident happened. The church was burned. But in the process, Johnny and Dally got hurt badly. “Dally suddenly slammed on the brakes and stared. ‘Oh, glory!’ he whispered. The church was on fire!” ... “I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. ‘I’ll get them. You kids stay out!!” … “Then I heard Johnny scream, and as I turned to go back for him, Dally swore at me and clubbed me across the back as he could, and I went down into peaceful darkness.” (page number ?) Their life at the church, and the church was set ablaze, as well as Ponyboy and his friends getting hurt. Just as Ponyboy and Johnny adjust to life after being called criminals, all goes down when the church burns and Johnny and Dally get hurt. Many heroes appear in the book The Outsiders. The characters that I think are heroes are Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally. The definition of a hero for me is a person who is brave enough to do things to help someone even if it is a dangerous thing to do.A hero also cares for others and people can rely on them. Ponyboy was a hero because he saved peoples’ lives. Johnny died as a hero because he also saved the kids from the burning church and he was also relied on by his gang members. Dally was hero mainly because he cared for his gang and people relied on him. These three characters were heroes in this book according to my definition of a hero.
Johnny and Dally are both very contrasting characters in the book; however they do have their similarities. Also, they both look up to each other. In the novel, Johnny is the character that reflects sensitivity and weakness. Johnny is constantly beaten by his father and is ignored by his mother. He has lost many things in life that others may take for granted. A quote from the novel describes Johnny as a “dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers” on page fourteen. Johnny’s soft and delicate personality is evident in that statement, especially when he is referred to a “puppy”. The image of a puppy implies vulnerability, a reflection on Johnny’s personality. Whereas Johnny is the vulnerable spot in the Greasers, Dally is on the other hand, the exact opposite. Dally is cold-hearted and hard, and plays the character of the devil in the novel. A quote from the book describes Dally’s eyes as “blue, blazing ice, cold with the hatred of the whole world” on page fourteen. This quote describes Dally as a cold character, and refers to the fact that Dally has seen many more hardships in his life than happiness. You can see that Johnny and Dally are both very different. When we were kids, we all had that one person we looked up to. Whether it was a princess, a celebrity, a fictional superhero, or a family member, we gave this person the title “hero.” We selected these people to be our heroes because they had specific qualities like bravery, strength, and intelligence, but not all heroes are required to have these qualities. A hero is someone who, based on perspective, can be found almost anywhere because they make sacrifices and do actions for the better of others.
