In the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Antony’s speech is more effective than Brutus’s because Anthony uses logos, ethos, and pathos to try and rally up the crowd without breaking his promise to Brutus, saying that he wouldn’t talk bad about the conspirators. White Brutus is just trying to tell the crowd why the conspirators killed Caesar and why it would help them and all of Rome. Another reason is because Anthony knows that the crowd of common people don’t know how to think for themselves, and so he can easily manipulate them into rebelling against the conspirators. Also, Mark Anthony knows that he can get to the people because of how close he was with Caesar and how Caesar trusted him. But then after he says how honorable he is and how they should trust him, he tells the people about all of the good that Caesar did for the people. Since Anthony knows that the common people are easy to manipulate and will believe anything with a little bit of explanation, he uses that to his advantage. He brings Caesar’s dead body to the platform where he is going to give the speech so that the people have more of a visual and even more reason to believe him. Anthony also reads outloud Caesar’s will and tells the people everything that he left for the commoners. He also showed the people the robe that he was wearing when he was stabbed. Anthony says (Elements of Literature Book Source 2 835) “My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it comes back to me. (weeps)” To the people, this proves that Caesar and Anthony were close friends during their time together and that they both cared for each other. Anthony uses all the details he can to persuade the people without the conspirators questioning
