The Influence of Speech Both Brutus as well as Antony uses the power of speech in different ways to persuade the Roman people. There are multiple contrasts and similarities in their use of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. Also, their speeches differ in how each man identified their audience. Correspondingly, they contrast one another in their speech patterns and use of rhetoric. Overall, each speech had a different impact among the people. Brutus uses varieties of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos in his speech. Brutus uses more logic and expertise, though he does use all three at some points. By the same token, one example using Ethos would be when Brutus says “believe me for my honour, and have respect to mine honour, that you may believe.” In other words, at first the people of Rome choose to believe him because they know he is a noble, honourable, and loyal Roman. Similarly, he is looked up to as a celebrity in the sense that he, as well as his family, have been involved in Rome’s political status for many years now. On the other hand, Brutus uses Logos when he says “ Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” This is Caesar’s evidence to the people that proves why Caesar needed to be killed. Each man identified their audience in a different way, but only one could be correct. Brutus believed the crowd was full of loyal romans who were reasonable, as well as intelligent. Oppositely, Antony knew the people were fairly unintelligible and gullible. He knew that going second was the right thing to do when Brutus offered.
