Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, George Washington, and Napoleon Bonaparte. These are great men who shaped the world. Great generals, great conquerors, and great politicians who use their great minds. This man is among this group whose life, deeds, and death change the world forever. The man’s name is Gaius Julius Caesar, better known as merely Julius Caesar. He was born on July 13, 100 BC, he died in the Ides of March, 44 BC. I would like to talk about his career as a politician where he shaped Rome forever and as a general where he distinguished himself as a great mind. To know why he is such a great politician and general, we must explore his life and how is greatness manifested in the last days of the Roman Republic.

But Caesar’s ambitions were higher, he wanted to run for the highest position in Rome, the Consul. Caesar due to his impervious nature was willing to further bury himself to debt for his campaign as Consul. He teamed up with two of Rome’s most prominent senators, Pompey and Crassus, which is known as the First Triumvirate. He won the Consulship with a large margins and became Consul. This man is so charismatic that many of the Senators even the older ones listen to him. He pushed for populist legislation that even powerful senators cannot passed. Under his consulship, there were social, political, and legal reforms he had done. He reformed the calendar which is similar to what we use today. Caesar always look for the advantage. This philosophy is stemmed from Opportunism. He would take a situation and get every advantage he can get. Caesar is not afraid to risk. This philosophy is also evident in his political career where he would debt himself further and risk his entire life for his cause. He rolled the dice when he waged a civil war against Rome itself and defeated his enemies who are also great generals. He became the Dictator of Rome. But with this philosophy came his ultimate downfall, in the night of the 15th of March, 60 senators conspired to assassinate Caesar for he was gaining too much power. And at that night, Rome changed forever.
Julius Caesar has climbed up his way to power from the bottom to the top. Through his military genius and political cunning, he became the greatest man in Rome. His assassins thought that when he died, the Republic will return. But they underestimate the product of Caesar’s work, the people rallied and a Civil War erupted and in the ashes the Roman Empire arose.
