Summary
Julia Robins writes about labor rights violations suffered by nail workers and some solutions for it in the article “Aesthetic Activism.” New York Times distributes many articles about workers who experience robberies, physical and verbal assaults, ethnic discriminating and overexposure to virulent chemicals in salons. Andrew Cuomo, a member of the Democratic Party, enforces paying unpaid salaries, closes unpermitted or unlicensed salons. Also, he provides labors with some information about their rights. In addition, he endorses a law bill in order to diminish language and anything that prevents official licensing and training of workers. On the other hand, some people participate to solve this problem by sharing awareness about nail
technicians’ moral principles throughout social media. Mayor Bill DeBlasio, a member in the Democratic Party, proclaims a day of action to inform immigrant communities about health compromises in nail industry. Although, New York Times successes in advocating for salon worker’s rights, it fails to catch the old organizing work that’s happens on the ground. In order to diminish the toxic chemicals hazards. Consumers could help solving this problem by guiding salons to use safe products and acquire lawmakers to apply initiatives such as California’s Health Nail Salon Recognition Program. These initiatives admit of using safe products and participating in safety and health courses. Jora Trang, managing attorney for worksafe, says if consumers help businesses with low-cost services such as manicures and pedicures, this will compel other businesses to decrease the prices in order to compete.
“That night I lay in bed and thought about dying and going to be with my mother in paradise. I would meet her saying, “Mother, forgive. Please forgive,” and she would kiss my skin till it grew chapped and tell me I was not to blame.”
Hilda Solis courageously wrote and supported a bill to raise the minimum wage in California and enforced a law of anti-sweatshops despite the Republican Party’s opposition. When she was elected to the California State Senate, Solis immediately wrote a bill to raise the minimum wage; however, it failed to pass the legislature, so she fought for the bill to be passed by the voters with help of labor leaders (“Hilda Solis,” Newsmakers). Although the bill was rejected, Solis still fought for the rights of the people, jeopardizing her seat in the senate and the faith of the senate. The government “uncovered a sweatshop where 72 Thai workers were working. Solis held Senate hearings, questioned garment manufacturers, and pushed for stronger enforcement of anti-sweatshop laws” (“Hilda Solis,” Newsmakers). Afterwards, Solis clearly risked the trust of her town by questioning...
Florence Kelley appeals to the masses that the conscription of unregulated child labor is abhorring through the use of ethos, juxtaposition, and pathos. Kelley’s speech tackles on one of her main goals in life, regulations on child labor. Her speech moved the masses to fight for the rights of children, and she won. Kelley is responsible for the safe working conditions and the child labor laws that the United States has in implementation today.
Labor’s rights, this issue have been bothering many worker since the 19th century and can still be a problem today. As John L. Lewis has said in his speech “I repeat that labor seeks peace and guarantees its own loyalty, but the voice of labor, insistent upon its rights, should not be annoying to the ears of justice or offensive to the conscience of the American people” (John L. Lewis), which under his words meant that labor is something that can be done right and peacefully but it needs rules and benefits that come with those rules which labor asks for and when labor asks for those rules and benefits it shouldn’t be taken like some annoying kid’s demands but more as something that needs to be done and done with a right mind set. Labor today consists of a man or woman going to work, working their hours, and finally getting paid for those hours at the end of the week, at least a minimum of $7.50 an hour (United States Department of Labor), but before it wasn’t like that before many workers would get paid very poorly even thought they would work for a lot of hours and they wouldn’t get benefits from their work or safety when working such as in the mines like the mine workers, but one man stood up for them and his name was John L. Lewis (John Llewellyn Lewis, Encyclopedia).
Jessica Dunegan is an incredible artist from Charleston who currently resides in Boston. Her works have been displayed in numerous shows in the United States, and her art went through different stages over the years. At one point Jessica created a series of works titled Scrambled Porn. According to her, she has an issue with porn because “this media epitomizes and fosters a male-centered culture” and “contributes to the degradation of women” (“About Scrambled Porn”). The show at the Robert Lange Studios called the Other Side has nothing to do with porn; however, it continues to explore the issues contemporary women have to struggle with.
Upon reading the article “Daring to Be Different: A Look at Three Lesbian Artists” by Laurel Lampel, the author’s main purpose is to discuss that unlike other female historical artists during the mid-19th century there were three artists whom dress and lived as lesbians, changing the norm of gender roles, and presented themselves differently to society (Lampel, 2). In addition to those experiences, it created a major impact for the artists’ new perceptions towards art history and art education (Lampel, 2). Those three artists were Bonheur, Brooks, and Gluck. The key question the author is addressing is her argument stating that from a passage in Deuteronomy, both genders are not allowed to wear each other’s clothing and in the mid-19th century
The book Emma Goldman: American Individualist tells the true story of an anarchist’s struggles through, life, love, and standing up for what you believe in. Emma Goldman was born on June 27, 1869 in the city of Kovno located within the Russian Empire (currently known as Kaunas in Lithuania) into a Jewish family. Most men during this time wanted their wives to bear sons; Goldman’s father, Abraham Goldman, was no different. Goldman’s mother was very content with Goldman’s sisters, Helena and Lena, and didn’t want to have any more children. When Goldman was born she was rejected by her father. This rejection affected Goldman throughout her life.
In the early 1920s being a woman and owning your own business was unheard of and thought of as “daring”. Women back then weren't really thought of as being business owners. It was a common way of life that a woman back then would just get married and have children. One woman challenged this way of thinking, her name was Dorothy Draper. Dorothy Draper was the first person to make interior design into a real career, and not just people arranging their homes on their own. She was established in 1923, her business was called Dorothy Draper & Company. With her blends concoction of color and classical furniture she really made a name for herself and invented the term and design practice of “Modern Baroque” (Dorothy Draper & Company,1). Though she

No other artist has ever made as extended or complex career of presenting herself to the camera as has Cindy Sherman. Yet, while all of her photographs are taken of Cindy Sherman, it is impossible to class call her works self-portraits. She has transformed and staged herself into as unnamed actresses in undefined B movies, make-believe television characters, pretend porn stars, undifferentiated young women in ambivalent emotional states, fashion mannequins, monsters form fairly tales and those which she has created, bodies with deformities, and numbers of grotesqueries. Her work as been praised and embraced by both feminist political groups and apolitical mainstream art. Essentially, Sherman’s photography is part of the culture and investigation of sexual and racial identity within the visual arts since the 1970’s. It has been said that, “The bulk of her work…has been constructed as a theater of femininity as it is formed and informed by mass culture…(her) pictures insist on the aporia of feminine identity tout court, represented in her pictures as a potentially limitless range of masquerades, roles, projections” (Sobieszek 229).
Cindy Sherman is a well known American photographer and film director. She was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, but soon after her birth her family moved to Huntington, Long Island. Cindy first became interested in visual arts when she was studying at the Buffalo State College. Sherman at first was more into painting than photography but when she became frustrated with painting she became interested in photography. She chose photography because she wanted to capture her own art rather than copy something and make it into a painting. Alongside Charles Clough, Robert Longo, and Nancy Dwyer they created an art center called Hallwalls. Sherman was also considered to be a part of The Pictures Generation which was an exhibition that was the first formal labeling of groups of artists with their images.
The rise of the Flower Child movement began as a direct result of the American intervention the the Vietnam Conflict. Flower childs were against the war in Vietnam and often demonstrated for peace and American withdrawal from the conflict. Flower Child's or better known as hippies influenced the 1960s to become anti-war which can be widely seen by the many musicians who sang for peace and love such as John Lennon and his song “Give Peace a Chance”. John Lennon held international renown for being a member of the Beatles and John himself can be portrayed as one of the most prominent hippies. The 1960s will forever be remembered as the decade of the counterculture movement but the most prominent moment of the counterculture movement is Woodstock.
Imagine having to host an important dinner party or having a special date to go on with your loved one. Now imagine your whole outfit being on point from head to toe, except your nails. Ew right. You shouldn’t have to do this these things with plain and boring nails, when a trip to your local nail salon is affordable, convenient and quick. The nail salon is a place where women go to get their nails, feet and face done. Each nail salon is different and varies in price, but most nail salons offer the same services. When you first walk in the nail salon you are greeted by the person who works behind the front desk and they ask you what do you want done today. After you tell the person behind the front desk what you want, you either wait for the next
A feminist is someone who believes that women should have the same opportunities as men. Some individuals dislike the fact of being named a feminist. While many others on the hand are proud to call themselves a feminist. An upcoming artist whose very popular in the music industry, and so happens to be a strong feminist advocate is known by the stage name Grimes. In all of Grimes’s appearances, performances, and music videos, she demonstrates her knowledge of, and her refusal to participate in, self-objectification and being sexualized. In some of her famous song Grimes reverses the male gaze, creating a situation in which men are being watched and masculinity is being deconstructed. The surprising fact of the term feminist is that men can
I am not the only one guilty of indulging in this ritual. Along with my fellow “manicurees,” I have made a personal investment in a billion-dollar business that has swept the U.S. in recent years. Each day, this growing sector of the personal service industry is responsible for making dozens of hands and people look and feel simply divine.
