The essay “Revising” by Joseph Harris outlines the importance of revision in the processes of writing any composition. In his words, revising is “rethinking, refining, and developing” the ideas and approach used in one's writing. Despite the importance of revision, the processes is often obscure to inexperienced writers because it is not immediately visible in a finished work. This makes it easy to believe that the final product is the result of a single draft rather than a long sequence of revisions. While always worthwhile, the effectiveness of revision can easily be muted by a misunderstanding of what revising entails. Harris states that there are three distinct stages present in writing: drafting, revising, and editing. Out of the
The chapter “Revising” taken from the book, originally published in 2006, Rewriting: How to Do Things with Texts, was written by Joseph Harris, an English professor who teaches at the University of Delaware. The chapter in his book that is titled “Revising,” suggests techniques and approaches to apply when revising one’s work and tackles common misconceptions on revision. Harris defines revising as, “ rethinking, refining, and developing” a piece of work ( 441). He uses these three words to encompass the importance and complexity of one word: revision.
How can you nurture and support the confidence of all students and help them forge unique writing identities? Through writing, people can understand themselves and other people better. We are all constantly reviewing and assigning meaning to our life experiences and putting those experiences into words—whether through self-talk or telling stories to other people. This ‘language’ is a way ‘we’ understand, organize, and relate to, making the chaos of our communities and lives coherent. In a writing environment that is loose and for the most part free we can slow down this articulation process in order to become increasingly and critically conscious of the meanings we assign to our experiences and communities in which we belong. It makes people think more about what they want to say and how they are saying it.
Riis demonstrates and shows his audience that a writer can make simple changes to their text to change the impact of what he or she is talking about and continue to always have their readers’ attention.
Media. The main means of mass communication regarded collectively. It comes in the form of t.v., radio, newspapers, magazines etc. The media has a way of portraying a story in a way that they want it to be seen by audiences. In other words, the media only tells us only what they want us to hear; which, may or may not be the truth or include the entire story. The media is always looking for the next best story and the competition to be the first one on the scene can be intense. A documentary by 9.14 Productions tells the story of a man and his art collection; The Barnes Foundation.
Thomas Osborne opens the narrative with a description of himself up very late at night trying to write a paper. Sadly, he’s been at it for four days, and unfortunately he seems to have writer’s block. Osborne’s personal experience with a first draft that he deems “failed” due to the writer’s block. Also, his realization of his personal writing style and how he uses it to his advantage versus conforming to a more normal style of writing occurs later in the selection. Looking through the lens of a reflective analysis perspective, it’s easy for me to find similarities to Osborne through my writing style, personal experiences, and through analysis I better understood

In the beginning of English 101 I was what you call a novice writer a person who only wrote what they felt was required. However, certain techniques that I learned in English 101 made me realize that writing was not about filling requirements; it’s about speaking out, exploring and proving a point. “Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.” (Trimble, 17) In John Trimble’s quote he tries to point out that writing is something that you grow with and learn as you go along. I believe this growth was achieved with a technique that was introduced to me by my professor called repetitive revision. What I found out was that revision of your essays helps in recognizing your mistakes and enhances the flow of your essays. By providing me...
“The Virtues of Growing,” by Carol Siskin is an essay that has two different versions. One being the rough draft that is also known as the original version and also the final draft. The progress of this essay displays a great revision of a paper. The original version versus the final version shows growth in the writers work, but also shows a lot of fault in the writer’s rough draft. Furthermore, the rough draft experienced a few expected struggles such as, the intro was too basic and it also provided too much opinion and personal experiences too early in the essay. The thesis was unclear and the opening questions was too broad because it didn’t lead to a stance or a position on the topic. These mistakes could impact the quality of an essay.

It was a task that took a significant amount of time and effort, but was truly an excellent learning experience. I found it intriguing how much the original essay can improve or modify over time; moreover, how different ideas flow through your brain each second. The revision of my essays taught me an enormous deal about writing and was genuinely pleasurable to do.

I, like many writers, have learned what it means to truly craft a piece of work. Before entering college, I had become accustomed to writing one draft essays. I never appreciated or understood the need for multiple drafts and peer review. Interestingly enough, in my Introduction to Rhetoric course with Dr. Mary Lamb, we discussed the difference between one-drafters and multi-drafters. One-drafters, as the name might imply, usually complete writing tasks in one shot. They revise and edit during the writing process and oftentimes consider their work to be complete; multi-drafters, on the other hand, write multiple drafts of their work and are continuously revising. As I have learned, neither writing style is necessarily better than other. This is because both types of writers are actively thinking about ways to better their work, whether it is by correcting grammatical errors or creating new ideas. Needless to say, I was a devoted one-drafter, but for some of the wrong reasons. I was always convinced that my first draft was always my best work. This was mainly because I did the majority of my revising and editing while writing (as I am doing ...
