Jonathan Swift's Essay, "A Modest Proposal" Jonathan Swift in his essay, "A Modest Proposal" suggests a unique solution to the problem concerning poor children in Ireland. Swift uses several analytical techniques like statistics, induction, and testimony to persuade his readers. His idea is admirable because he suggests that instead of putting money into the problem, one can make money from the problem. However, his proposal is inhumane. Swift wrote his proposal for those that were tired of looking at poor children of Ireland. He starts out explaining the situation in Ireland regarding single poor mothers that have three to six children and cannot afford to feed or clothe them. The children of the poor are a burden and a disgrace for Ireland. He suggests that a certain number of the kids be set aside for breeding and the rest be auctioned off for consumption when they reach a year old. Swift backs his proposal with six key points. One, there will be a reduction of "papists" in the country. Two, the poor will have some valuable assets to help them with their economic needs. Three, the new goods will burst economy. Four, the parent/s will gain money and will not have to support their children year after year. Five, "would bring great custom to taverns." Six, there would be a greater incentive to marry and better child rearing practices. Swift uses statistical information to back up his proposal. The issue that Swift is addressing is the fact that there are too many poor children in Dublin and that they are becoming such a huge burden for all the poor mothers or parents of the country. Swift then creates his own solution to the problem. He proposes that all poor children who are around one year of age, be cooked and eaten by the people of Dublin, preferably the poor. With this solution, he argues that it will eventually put an end to the overpopulation of the poor young children and it will satisfy the hunger for all the other people. Crazy right?
In the time frame that Swifts’ A Modest Proposal was written Ireland was going through political, economic, and religious struggles. In 1729 England had contrived, with the help of Irish venality, to wreck Ireland’s merchant marine, agriculture, and wool industry. Prostitutes in Swift’s paper are having kids like senseless people, but yet they can’t afford to feed them. Jonathan Swift proposes that his people should sell the babies and eat them. He thinks this would help solve the problem of over population. Swift tried to give his people pamphlets on how to fix the problem that was plaguing their country, but they ignored them. Swift says “These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants.”(1) Swift proposes that the mothers sell the babies for 8 shillings; the rich would find the child to be a delicacy and the extra money would go to the landlord. The story itself is ironic since no one can take Swift’s. seriously consider the proposal. This irony is clearly demonstrated at the end of the story; Swift makes it clear that this proposal would not affect. him since his children were grown and his wife unable to have any more children. They are all children.
Alexander was a smart man and there was one main person to thank for that, his father. Philip II, knowing that someday his son would be a powerful figure arranged for none other than Aristotle to be Alexander’s tutor. Alexander grew to love his tutor almost as much as his father. Alexander’s favorite book was the Iliad by Homer, it was a story about some of the things he hoped to do when he got older, such as fight in wars. As a youth Alexander also enjoyed hunting and martial arts. Alexander feared that by the time he became king there would be nothing left for him to conquer.
The author’s thesis argues that Alexander became who he was based on the society he grew up in. Green describes Alexander’s surroundings as “loud, clamorous professional soldiers, who rode or drank or fought or fornicated” (pg. 40). These were the male examples that he had in his life and his father was no different. He was also surrounded by the planning and strategy of war, treachery and conspiracies. Alexander the great is known as one of the most ruthless and greatest leaders the world has ever seen. In less than ten years, Alexander conquered cities from Greece all the way to modern day India. Not only did he defeat and conquer cities throughout the known world, but Alexander would also leave his mark spreading and influencing Greek society wherever he went. His leadership and conquests united the East and the West as a whole like no one up to that point had done before. His impact on culture and society when meshing his Greek background with his conquered cities became something truly unique. In 323 B.C. when Alexander passed away, he not only left behind a vast thriving empire, but also a legacy that would be remembered throughout history.
Alexander the Great was only 20 years when his father Philip of Macedon died. Even though he was a young man, he had an unusual talent for politics and military tactics. After his father’s death, Alexander moved to continue Philip’s invasion of Persia. In the ten years of his war campaigns, Alexander conquered a large portion of the then-known world. Plutarch’s Life of Alexander speaks of Alexander’s father telling him “my son, seek thee out a kingdom equal to thyself; Macedonia has not room for thee” (Plutarch, 6.1). Aristotle tutored Alexander where he encouraged his ambition, and taught him that bravery in a man was an admirable quality. Alexander’s birth was associated with great signs; Plutarch writes “Alexander was born the sixth of Hecatombeon … the same day that the temple of Diana was burnt while its mistress was absent, assisting at the birth of Alexander” (Plutarch, Lives).
Alexander began his military campaign and his rule much where his father left off. Whether or not it was his aim, this created a sense of normality for the men that was part of his father’s regime. Alexander’s position as a warrior-king who stood side-by-side among his men also served to create respect among his peers. Gradually, as Alexander conquered more Persian land, he began to adopt the policies of Persian rulers. Alexander’s change in policy extended beyond just political roles, he gave consideration to the local gods in many of the lands that he conquered. Eventually, Alexander brought people in from the conquered nations to serve under him.
Additionally, Alexander the Great gave his military the opportunity and the right to choose whether or not to engage in battle by providing an explanation as to why the fight rose in the first place along with the outcomes of engaging or ignoring the fight. Although he biasedly persuaded his men to go into battle, each soldier went into battle with confidence and the urge to fight. Not only was the outcome of this strategy victorious, but the people grew to trust, admire, and view Alexander the Great as goodly. Another example of how Alexander the Great liberated citizens to get what he wanted was demonstrated by his adaption to the traditions of the Persian empire. Most of the adopted traditions from Persia were attempts to liberate the citizens from the fact that their country had been taken someone else by displaying similarities between the previous King and Alexander himself. Similar to how Alexander compared himself to his troops to manipulate them into battle like he wanted, Alexander also compared himself to the previous Persian king to manipulate the citizens of both Persia and Macedonia to merge
Alexander III the Great, the king of Macedonia and the conqueror of the Persian Empire is one of the most known personalities from the ancient civilization. According to the primary source “The Parallel Lives” the Greek writer Plutarch 46-119 A.D., "Alexander was born early in the month Hecatombaeon, the Macedonian name for which is Loüs, on the sixth day of the month, and on this day the temple of Ephesian Artemis was burnt"(Plutarch, “The Parallel Lives” ~ 100 A.D). He was the son of the Macedonian king Fillip the second and his wife Olympia the princess of Epirus. He spent his childhood watching his father turning Macedonia into a great military nation. He attended most of the political meetings with his father, “he entertained the ambassadors from the king of Persia, in the absence of his father, and entering much into conversation with them, gained so much upon them by his affability, and the questions he asked them, which were far from being childish or trifling...“ (Plutarch, “The Parallel Lives” ~ 100 A.D). When Alexander was 13 years his father hired the great Greece philosopher Aristotle to be his tutor. Alexander said to him, “At my parents I own my life; at my teacher i own my wellfare" (Plutarch, “The Parallel Lives” ~ 100 A.D). Aristotle taught him rhetoric, literature, science and medicine which was very important to his future life.
Born in the capitol of the Macedonian kingdom, Pella, to King Philip II of Macedon, the conqueror of Greece and Queen Olympias of Epirus, the legendary Alexander the Great, is known as one of history’s most powerful rulers. Striving to become greater than his heroic ancestors, such as Hercules, son of god, Zeus, according to Greek mythology. As arguably the greatest influence on the rise of Hellenism, King Alexander III of Macedon was believed to be “superhuman, destined for greatness from conception.” Growing up under the influence of strict mentors, Alexander progressed into a well-mannered and ambitious adolescent.
Westman, Yancy, Edman, Tomlin, and Perkins’s (2002) did a randomised trials for high-protein, low-carbohydrate (HPLC) diet’s effects on metabolic system and body weights. They found that in average, participants lost 7.7 kilograms (Westman, et al., 2002). In addition, majority of subjects experienced favourable lipid profile change. However, all subjects were also found to develop ketunoria while undergoing the diet (Westman, et al., 2002). As this research was done on subjects with broad age range, the result of this study may be used as guidance for large age groups. It has to be noted that the research is funded by Atkins Centre for Complimentary Medicine which was founded by Robert Atkins, promoter of low-carbohydrate diet, Atkins diet. This introduces bias into the research and while authors of the paper claimed that the research was done independently, it does not satisfy ethical aspect of research.
The ability to test for valid results is quite a challenge. Moreover, holding a study that is able to span long periods of time can be taxing and expensive. For those reasons, the majority of studies on these diets come from the people or companies putting out the product. Much of the findings tend to favor the point of view of the product’s agent.
One of the most successful and triumphant generals in history was Alexander the Great. Alexander was born to King Philip and Olympias in 356 BC. King Philip was assassinated in 336 BC, which climbed Alexander to the Macedonian throne. Alexander found himself surrounded by many enemies. He was a witty thinker who was quick to make decisions and took big risks. During his lifetime at the throne, he conquered the Persians, Egypt, and into the Asia minor. Alexander’s success came from his ruthless determination to expand, his self-centered desires, and killing anything in his way.
