It feels like to me that the man in the video is making fun of sexual education teaching. John Oliver makes some great points, and great jokes. Obviously there’s a lot of exaggeration that takes place, but all in all, sexual education teaching has been lacking. Many schools are afraid to teach the subject, and go into depth and give information out to the students. For example, many schools wouldn’t even express what they were teaching to the public when it came to sexual education classes. This is a change that needs to be made. It is sad that it has taken me until my sophomore year of college to feel comfortable about talking about sex. There needs to be a change at the lower education levels.

I definitely agree with that statement, since I have went through elementary, middle, and high school once. The video talks about how teachers often do not go into much detail when talking about sex. In fact, all they really teach is abstinence. In reality, many teenagers are deciding to have sex. In fact, we talked in class about how kids are starting to have sex at a younger age. Therefore, people need to be educated much more about sex. When I was in high school, a good friend of mine got a girl pregnant, when they were both 17 years old. I couldn’t believe it. I thought that was the craziest thing I had ever heard. Now looking back, it’s really not that rare to see. Some other things I remember from high school like it was yesterday was having to listen to my buddies talk about who they thought was the hottest girl and who they slept with last weekend. It was either that, or listening to them talk about what they did with their girlfriend the night beforehand. Looking back, I realize how disgusting and inappropriate we were. The thing is, that’s pretty much all high school guys talk about. I’ve had some extremely horny friends that could not keep it in their pants. The reason why teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease rates are very high is because these teens are not fully educated both physically and emotionally. In the article, “Teaching Teens about Sexual Pleasure” discusses how “sexually educators really need to start discussions from the more holistic viewpoint that sexuality is more than sex and that sex is more than intercourse”(pg.13) which is not that case in the public schools of Lubbock. In the film, when students approach the teachers about sex, who are to guide them through high school, dismiss the student’s curiosity and tell them that abstinence is the way to go. This gives Shelby more of the incentive to create a better sex education program because even teachers who live in that community have a strong Christianity background and are taught that same way. If Lubbock had a better program then, they can teach their students and faculty that sex is not an act but a behavior with a lot of grey areas.

No longer is sex education left to teachers and parents to explain, it is constantly in our faces at the forefront of our society. Sex and relationship education (SRE) is supporting children through their moral, physical and psychological aspects of growing up to be an adult, and making sure they have knowledge on relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health (Sex Education Forum, 2010). There are three main elements in SRE, the first element is attitudes and values, which is about developing positive values and be able to consider moral issues before they make their decisions on having intercourse (Kirby, 2007). The second element is personal and social skills, which is about teaching children to have the confidence to value themselves and others to become respectful for individual conscience and the skills to judge the kind of relationship they want; the third element is about accessing the knowledge and understanding of human sexuality, reproduction, sexual health, emotions and relationships (Kirby, 2007). Sex education in public schools has been a controversial issue in the United States for over a decade. With the HIV and teen pregnancy crises growing, sex education is needed.
In the United States, there is a rising problem that is not going anywhere anytime soon, that is if we, as citizens, don 't change it. This problem is causing billions of dollars and people 's futures all because schools would rather teach ignorance than the truth. What’s the problem? Sex education. Although sex education may not seem like a rising conflict, it is actually one of the top controversial topics in our country regarding education. According to Brigid McKeon, “Each year, U.S. teens experience as many as 850,000 pregnancies, and youth under age 25 experience about 9.1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs)” (McKeon). This number is so unbelievable to any sane person, but somehow schools still won 't take the initiative to teach realistic sex education. Sex education can be taught in two different procedures- comprehensive or abstinence only. The difference between the two methods is that comprehensive sex education teaches abstinence as a secondary choice, so that teens who decide not to wait are well educated on how to keep themselves protected. Comprehensive sex education should be required in every single public school because it is the most effective method on how to keep teenagers well informed and prepared.

Therefore, these teenagers are prepared and well aware of what is correct. Is that not the goal of sex education, to create informed individuals who make responsible and healthy decisions about their sexuality? Before moving on, one must know that sex education is about, but not limited to the discussion of sexual intercourse. If formally received in school, these topics are brought up and discussed at age-appropriate times over the course of children’s junior high and high school education. Overall, my point of view is that sexual education should be taught in school. It’s a subject that should not be looked over and should be taught before you go to high school when those things come into play. This is my point of view because boys and girls need to know about their bodies, know about STD’s, and know the different types of methods to prevent pregnancy. Sexual education should be taught regardless. Another important thing that everyone needs to learn are the different ways to stay protected so that you do not end up getting pregnant, or getting a girl pregnant. Instead of having unprotected intercourse they need to either use a condom, or be on some sort of birth control. Even if schools taught just abstinence it still would not be enough. “In 2007, a study showed that abstinence only programs have no beneficial impact on the sexual behavior of young people” (Facts on American Teens). Sex education is not taken as seriously as it should be in schools, it is treated like it is not a big deal. Schools should require a sex education class that specifically teaches students about sex and goes into depth of all the possible consequences because of the high pregnancy, abortion, and virus rates.
Sex education in our schools has been a hot topic of debate for decades. The main point in question has been whether to utilize comprehensive sex education or abstinence-only curriculum to educate our youth. The popularity of abstinence-only curriculum over the last couple of decades has grown largely due to the United States government passing a law to give funding to states that teach the abstinence-only approach to sex education. But not teaching our children about sex and sexuality is not giving them the information they need to make well educated decisions. Sex education in our schools should teach more than just abstinence-only because these programs are not proven to prevent teens from having sex. Children need to be educated on how to prevent contracting sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies and be given the knowledge to understand the changes to their bodies during puberty. According to the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Kindergarten-12th Grade from the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), comprehensive sex education “should be appropriate to age, developmental level, and cultural background of students and respect the diversity of values and beliefs represented in the community” (SIECUS).
