Altum-A Competitor In 1973, John Altum was a freshman at Copperas Cove High School when him and 11 other boys succeeded in shattering a very uncommon world record. To this day John still sees it as an achievement and refuses to put is trophy away. Leaving his Mark John had always been very smart making all A’s and B’s throughout his schooling. Known as the class clown, John was very athletic but was the shortest kid in his class at five foot nothing. Making the basketball or football teams had been a struggle. John wanted a chance to show that he could accomplish great things working with a team. Guiness Book of World Records Altum and eleven friends found an amazing opportunity to show off their athleticism. One random day the twelve boys were looking through the newly popular book “Guiness Book of World Records” . The boys were just looking for something fun they could do together as a team, then they saw it, the perfect opportunity: Leapfrogging. (Sidebar-The Guiness Book of World Records is a book that holds all of the records being held in the world. It was first published in 1955 but had just started becoming popular in the 70’s. silliest records yet it is still very popular today.) Leapfrogging The boys got the date set for the event. They started aimlessly working out and preparing but they had no idea what they really needed to be doing to be successful in the event, like most teenage boys they all tried to slap it all together which they soonly discovered that wouldn't work. The boys did have specific things they would have to be prepared for but their lack of focus didn’t help the situation.
The boys would have to go one- hundred miles to break the past world record. The boys would switch out so there would be six boys going at once so they would have to plan how they would sub out but instead their plan was to wing it. The boys also had to stay awake for a very long time so they made sure to gather up some energy drinks but no they didn’t think about a good night
sleep. Helping out the Town The day was coming up soon and by this point John and his friends had discovered they would be filmed by the local news cast during this event so they had to be prepared to show their new skill to everyone watching. Another wonderful thing they found out was that they would be raising money for a local hospital. They would be helping people in need so they really stepped up their game and started practicing day after day with a better goal. Exhausted The day had finally come, the boys were excited yet exhausted both before and during the event. The event ended up taking 23 hours. The boys trying to stay awake in between their turns would play football in the grass in the middle of the track. Shattered Finally the 23d hour came and the event came to an end. They did it, and boy were they tired! Twelve boys from a very small town had shattered the world record in leapfrogging and John and his friends were very happy about it. All The boys received their trophies and tie, took pictures and headed home. Not so Popular As the boys went to school day after day and the event became less and less popular. After a year or so it wasn't really a big deal to anyone. Hearts Not Shattered but The Record Is This event stayed in the book until the year of 1976. The record was broken again by another group of boys from Asia. John didn't think much of it and neither did the other boys. During his interview in 2017 John claimed “I’m probably the only participant that still has my trophy but at least i'll always remember being the shortest kid in my grade yet holding the world record in leapfrogging… well at least for three years”. John will remember this achievement forever.

Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.

The Long Walk has become something of a national pastime in America where every year, hundreds of teenage boys apply to compete. Only a hundred boys are selected to try to be the last man standing. The winner receives anything they could ask for. We experience The Long Walk through the eyes of sixteen year old Ray Garraty. We see firsthand (or sometimes the fallen ones name is murmured slowly along the lines that remain standing) as one by one, the contestants fall from exhaustion, pain, mental anguish, or because they simply fell below the required 4mph speed. He makes friends with several and is forced to see them fall to the hail of bullets when they’re given their third and final warning.
