Just as the title states; “Family Affair”, this story is about a family vacation, but there is someone that is not apart of the Carlton family, Joe Whitlock. Whitlock is not only an uninvited companion to their vacation, but also a criminal who escaped from jail and is on the run. He is a determined, suspicious and fearless man, that they only find out is an escaped prisoner thanks to their young son. Throughout the entire story “Family Affair”, Joe Whitlock is very suspicious of the Carlton family, and their actions; what they will assumingly tell everyone possible about his being there. This happens more than once throughout the story, “The man paused and looked suspiciously at the boy…” (Hardwick-p. 2/3 ). Another example is when Tom Carlton, the father of the two children, stops for gas and goes to sign the page needed to finish up, and whitlock tells him to sign while he was watching. “Just sign on the dotted line, mister. While I’m watching.” (Hardwick-p.3/3). Although Joe Whitlock may not be very observant, he can also be very dedicated to his plan and determined to complete it without being caught. …show more content…
Joe Whitlock also has a lot of determination in the story “Family Affair”.
For example, he not once in the story gave up on his plan to escape from prison and get away with it. “I’ve been waiting a long time for just one car to be in here.” (Hardwick-p.1/3). Also, Whitlock is very dedicated because throughout the story he tried very hard to get the Carlton family to act and seem normal in front and near police officers. Another example of Whitlock’s Determination is even when he hears about how the police were stopping everyone while searching for Agriculture Department
Inspection. No one is completely fearless, but Joe Whitlock is very close to being completely fearless. Although he is very capable of murdering anyone without hesitation or even a blink. Whitlock is still afraid of the authorities; and of getting caught once again. “And I’ll kill some more if i have to.” (Hardwick-p.2/3) When Whitlock says this, he then asks the young son, Tommy, about what else they said about him in the newspaper. Not only is Whitlock very close to being fearless, he is also suspicious of others and their actions. What also makes Whitlock fearless is that when the Carltons pull into the curving drive at the rest stop he goes for the first chance he gets to put a knife at her, while still not knowing whether or not anyone from that family has a gun or knife themselves. In conclusion, this suspenseful short story “Family Affair” is created mostly by one character and some of his traits; fearlessness, determination, and suspicious.

The main conflict that Wes Moore faced was surviving and overcoming the troubles and influences in the environments he grew up in. This quote describes how all of the people living in the same places as Wes, struggled through the same things, what Wes described to be, “…the deadly streets, poverty, and the twin legacy of exclusion and low expectations.” (Moore 170) This means that the economic issues of these cities directly influenced the inhabitants’ life decisions and everyone had the same expectation for life, nothing good. According to Murray Bowen’s family systems theory, the family subsists in an arrangement, whereas the individuals are inseparable from their network of relationships, but continue to strive to be individualized. Consequently, various forms of these networks are grounded in the domestic structure and the “normal” or “ideal” family and its development is derived from the interaction of the family members as they remain differentiated, anxiety is minimal, and partners have beneficial emotional communication with their family members (Nichols, 2014). Subsequently, the idea of achieving individuality while remaining in a cohesive family unit may cause stress. Concepts such as differentiation of self, triangulation, emotional cutoff, and anxious attachment may aid in the elucidation of the family system. This theoretical concept along with these coinciding terms will be explored through one episode of the television series The Goldbergs called Rush.

When the other Wes was making decisions about his life he didn’t have good role models to show him what is right and wrong. On the other hand Wes had very good role models in his life. His mother did everything she could for Wes, like sending him to a private school, moving in with their grandparents and sending him to military.
