Wes Moore lived in Baltimore with his mother Joy, his father Westly, and his two sisters Nikki and Shani. One day three year old Wes was playing with his older sister Nikki and punched her in the face. Joy was furious because it reminded her of her abusive marriage she had with a man named Bill. With both of these combine, it made Wes’s opportunities starting from a young age, very slim of being successful. Growing up, Wes Moore had his mom and family around him to support him and when things got bad, his mom sent him to military school as a disciplinary action. This saved Wes from further becoming a bad kid because there, he learned discipline and respect. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore was off selling drugs and doing other bad things while his only influence was his brother. The other Wes Moore was so involved in his profits from selling drugs that he even sold to a cop even though he knew that he was undercover (Moore 112). Wes took this chance because he was so desperate for the twenty dollars he was going to receive, he didn 't care what the consequences were. I believe that if the author Wes Moore never went to military school, that he would have turned out just like the other Wes Moore. Weich from Lincoln County Jail stated that when investigating the jail, inmate were forced to garden as their “hardwork” this was supposed to change them. Was Wes Moore really more successful than the other Wes Moore because of the choices they made, or was it because of the influences they had in their life that made them who they are today? The Other Wes Moore is a story about two boys with similar backgrounds and similar situations, growing up in similar neighborhoods. The two boys though, end up living two diverse and different lives. The question then becomes “what causes them to change so drastically?” because for all intent and purposes their fates could have been the same. The author gives credit throughout the novel of certain people who made him the man he is today. In the same manner, the author points out how easily his life wouldn’t have been what the people around him are, without the support. The novel does a magnificent job of showcasing the importance of a reliable and present role model in their life to be successful in life.
He felt like an unsuccessful person, yet the way Wes views an accomplishment and the way the South African culture views success is completely opposite, but in reality they each reached success differently. The Other Wes Moore provides a unique way to show how living in streets full of violence and crack can bring out successful people. Wes was fortunate to have a mother that cared for him and didn't want to see him end up failing like the other Wes Moore, and therefore ended up in Military school. He learned that playing pro basketball isn't meant for everyone and would need to back it up with something more realistic. Going to South Africa and connecting with Zinzi was symbolically good for Wes because it showed Wes that anyone can be successful without doing the same things you did.

My fundamental beliefs are that adults and children should have respect for one another treating people as individuals. I believe that we should model a sense of understanding, encouragement, trust, teamwork, and perseverance in all who we come in contact with. I believe that everyone has should have the opportunity to learn in a environment that is positive and encouraging. Recognizing my fundamental beliefs I know that in the Skinner-Rogers’ dichotomy that I fall on the Rogerian side of the scale. My beliefs are consistent with that of Rogers. I am also in favor of referent power and I would like to work with the students as an interactionalist. With all of these frameworks in mind I looked at a program that most fit my beliefs and frameworks. I believe that I can initiate the program of Glasser and use it effectively in my teaching situation. Choice Therapy is an explanation of behavior, Reality Therapy is a process allowing Choice Therapy principles to be operationalized, and the Quality Schools represent the application of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy ideas in Education. William Glasser’s model involves the initiation of what he calls quality schools. Glasser (1992) contends that we must offer students an education that they can see will satisfy both their immediate and future needs.
