Good Times is an sitcom about a poor African American family who lives in the ghetto. The Evans family is family of five living in a small apartment on each others back. James Evans the man of the house is bouncing around from job to job while his loving wife Florida Evans is a school bus driver and trying to maintain things around the house. Their first child JJ Evans is not your typically type of son. JJ is a smart, outgoing, and a hustle man. Thelema is the only girl. She is spoil and the type of sister that everyone has. Whatever she wants she gets and that makes her brothers mad. Lastly there is Michael. He is the baby and is the nerd of the family. Michael is all about his books and making his parents proud. 1974 with 6 seasons following. With the show ending in 1979 the was to never return. Good Times would last between 25-30 minutes and would air CBS. “Life in the Chicago projects is never easy, However, the Evans family never gives up trying to make the best of things.
While Florida and James struggle to provide for their family, their sons J.J., an aspiring painter, Michael, the undying political crusader, causing trouble while their sister, Thelma, stands between them as the voice of reason. Living in the same building were Willona Woods, Florida's best friend from High School who provided support, love and gossip and Nathan Bookman, the overweight janitor who gave them grief and was the butt of a lot of fat jokes, especially Willona who often referred to him as Buffalo Butt or Booger. Life, at least, is never boring while they fight to keep their heads above water and one day leave the projects, which they did in the series finale. Sadly, it was without James who was killed off in the 4th …show more content…
season.” -Kate Tripper This is just one of the reviews that I came across and I felt as though that there are different opinions about this sitcom. The Evans family was just your typically family living from paycheck from paycheck. Somehow the family made it work with the help from God. Good Times is kinda based off a stereotype of African Americans. My opinion on Good Times is that is it a great show to raise your kids upon. It teaches the value of how to love your family. Being a black family back in those days were hard because of the Civil Rights were going on. When a black male can graduate from high school and attend college and coming from a community that the Evans family lived in is accomplishment. No one ever thought to see a black male to succeed the way they did. Having James as a father figure is good because you don’t see a lot of fathers acting the way James did. Mr. Evans demanded respect in his house and that is what he got. I think more parents need to watch Good Times to see what children had to go through before they were here. When you have children at an young age, then you and that child will never know what it means to have disciple. As said in the last paragraph, we don’t relate to what happened in 1974 because they were going through the Civil Rights Movement and dealing with racist people on a daily basis.
Being an young parent and then to become an young parent is something they didn’t have to deal with because parents didn’t play that. There are a lot if things you couldn’t get away with back then that you can now. People just don’t how to act when it comes down to respect and having to raise a family. The family that prays together stays together and that’s what the Evans family did. They had the support of friends and you can’t get that now. The Evan’s family trusted people and our first ones are “I don’t trust them or I don’t know”. The Evans family didn’t know a lot of people, but still trusted them and were very nice to
them. In closing we are thinking in this day and time that we are to judge a book by it’s cover, but we shouldn’t jump to conclusions about people. Living in the world we live in now os ve4ry dangerous. You have to watch your back at all times. It’s not how it used to be when you can just go anywhere and don’t have problems, now problems follow you everywhere you go. Children nowadays don’t care what is going on, how they treat their elders, and it is just crazy. You couldn’t grow up disrespecting an adult and not expect to get in trouble, but now it’s just a slap on wrist and go play. We have to go back to the old days where parents cared about their child respecting them and obeying what they have been told. I guess we’ll get there one day.
The Higginson family goes all the way back to Shifnall, Shropshire, England in 1767 to John Smythe. The Higginson name has changed four times over the many years, from Smythe, Smyth, Smith, to Higginson. It went from Smith to Higginson March 29, 1807 when Charles Wood Higginson was born to Mary Higginson and Robert Smith. Robert Smith was a minister in the Shifnal parish church. According to William Thomas Higginson, Charlels’ son, "his father’s last name should have been Smith, that his mother, Mary Higginson was merely working in the Smith’s household so she gave her son, Charles her maiden name. Charles Wood Higginson married Mary Ann Bouncer February 28, 1827, they had twelve children together. The eldest

The clip ‘Trouble with Evan’ narrates the struggle of a boy named Evan that puts his stepdad Mike and his mother Karen through stress because of his ill manners. Despite him being at a tender age of 11 years and in 6th grade, his mannerism is worrying because he is already engaging in morally unacceptable activities such as shoplifting, smoking, and gross disobedience, bullying other children and even stealing from his parents. Therefore, this puts his parents under severe psychological stress as they try to figure where their parenting is going wrong in a bid together to make him grow morally upright (Henning, 2016). Evan’s behavior was also straining his relationship with his parents and this stressed the parents as they tried to figure out different ways in which they could once again improve their relationship with their son. In addition, the clip revolves around trying to uncover the mystery as to what could be causing Evan’s unacceptable behavior.
Family is a story about slaves, masters of the land, and the interconnectedness of what it means to be “family”. Loretta is the daughter of the Master of the Land and as a child spends time with Sun even teaching him to read. She was going against the law in doing this and she helped him to escape. Loretta was not a mean person; she risked a lot for Sun and truly cared about him. She knew he was her half-brother and treated him with respect. When Sun left he promised he would send for her, but he never did. He sent letters asking how his sisters were and she became jealous. Loretta had power over the slaves because she was the white daughter of the master and as she grew more jealous and learned the ranks in society she changed. She took out her anger and jealousy out on Peach, Plum, and Always. She became evil and all the goodness in her heart was gone. Due to the experiences in her life, she adapted to accommodate for her jealousy and to take on the role of Mistress of the Land. Under different circumstances in a different time period this might not have been the outcome. As a chil...
Among the many reasons for the Black people to migrate to the North were: the subordinate status of the Black people to the whims of the white communities; a belief of more opportunities for jobs, education, and the freedom to live the lives guaranteed them in the 13th,14th, and 15th amendments to the constitution of the United States of America, and to be free of the extreme punishments for noncompliance of the Jim Crow Laws inundated throughout the southern states after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The Ida Mae Brandon Gladney family was an example of these migratory people.
The Andrews family consists of an African American father and mother that are in their early 50s and two teenage children. This paper will focus on primary heart health for Mrs. Andrews. The Anderson family is an African-American pair of grandparents –Ernie and Audrey—raising their daughter’s three children. Their daughter and her husband were killed in a car accident recently; however, the grandchildren had been living with the grandparents before this untimely tragedy due to financial hardships experienced by the family. There are three children, two of which appear to be adjusting well, and have supports in place. The main concern of Ernie and Audrey surround their 3-month old granddaughter, Artesia. Artesia was born with an extremely low birth weight, and has faced other health problems since delivery. While Artesia’s mother was pregnant with her, it was reported that they had been living in a car. Artesia’s mother did not receive proper medical care, as well as engaged in proper self-care, during the pregnancy due to her
Struggles with learning lessons in life can be challenging. Learning to make good choices in life and lead a life of righteousness can prove difficult, especially when dealing with family members who don’t make the right choices themselves. It’s hard to make good life choices when surrounded by people who are always making the wrong choice and lying. Parents should be respected, trustworthy and role models for developing minds of their children. Like life, not every choice can be black or white.
Good Times was an interesting 1970's television comedy series that explored the life of a poor black family. This family was simply trying to get by and have a good life in the projects of Chicago. The Evans family was a family that faced real problems on the show and encountered many different situations which they had to overcome. When the show was debuted on February 1, 1974, the series starred John Amos and Esther Rolle as James and Maude (the parents) (Ingram).
It’s important to point out that no matter how “ideal” family one is there are still things that they have to deal with and fix. Family one’s issues often come from the growing up of their children. The daughter is just starting high school and the son is in elementary school, so each of them are growing and going through things. The father and the daughter have major different outlooks on whether she should be dating or not. This issue is dealt with them talking about the problem and working through it together. There are issues between the father and mother, they do not always see eye to eye and this creates tension. The important thing here is that they do not allow their personal issues to affect their ability to do their jobs and take care of the children. The children come first. These issues could easily point to there being a family crisis but I do not agree with that. These issues are normal and have been something that all families will deal with, regardless if they’re a modern family or a family from 100 years ago. Issues are going to occur and the important part seeing them through to only learn from the
The majority of families were once considered perfect. The father went to work everyday, while the mother stayed at home and cared for her two children, “Henry” and “Sue”. The children never fought and the parents were involved in all the community events. Our society has grown to accept that there is no such thing as a perfect family. Eleven-year-old Ellen from the book Ellen Foster, by Kaye Gibbons, grows up in a household where her father is an abusive alcoholic and her mother is too sick to complete everyday tasks. By using her positive assets, and learning from her negative assets, Ellen was able to overcome a lot of challenges throughout the book.
The rise and fall of Good Times, how did it begin and how did it end? How did the show get it season? What ever happened to John Amos? How did African Americans portray the show and did other cultures also watch it? According to IMBD Good Times was a spin-off from the sitcom Maude (1972), there were no actual references to that show or its characters. In that series, Florida was employed as Maude Findlay's housekeeper in suburban New York and her husband Henry was employed as a firefighter. So on Good Times (1974), Florida and her husband James live in Chicago with their three kids JJ, Michael, and Thelma and there is no mention of their previous jobs. James never went by the name of Henry or them ever having lived in New York. In fact, Florida and neighbor Willona Woods are longtime friends and believed to have lived in Chicago for several years. Although, in one episode Florida did mention that she was house cleaner.
Because of Intrapersonal and Interpersonal conflict within these young men they need professional and spiritual help so move them from hurting to healing. This kind of pain may take a lifetime to heal, however nothing is too hard for God. I’m sure the techniques from Intrapersonal Conflict by Hocker & Wilmot will help give us an insightful approach to dealing with the intrapersonal conflicts in their family.
In the past families were portrayed as having two loving and understanding parents who always got along and children were just perfect and got along fine. The reality is that how families were viewed in the past is just simply unrealistic. The perfect families of the past simply never existed. Times were much harder as parents were never home because they were forced to work long and dangerous hours in harsh conditions. These conditions would sometimes lead to illnesses and in some cases death. In many circumstances children weren’t even living with their parents. They would end up in the system or living with other family members. Domestic violence was also much more common than we honestly cared to acknowledge due to lack of education on the subject. Women with children were in many cases abounded with small children. Families in the past were not as functional as we are led to
