Oil is an important resource in America but what most do not know is oil drilling comes with a price. Former president Jimmy Carter, prepared an arguement to try to save a beautiful land he once visited from the destruction of oil drilling. Carter uses the three methods of persuasion, pathos, logos and ethos, to present his arguement to his audience to preserve Alaska. Through pathos, Carter is able to make the audience feel pity for the land that would be forever scarred by oil drilling. Carter uses his experiences in Alaska to paint a picture for the audience and appeal to their emotions. During his trip to Alaska, Carter saw many beautiful thing that would be hurt by the process of oil drilling. "I was saddened to think of the tragedy that might occur if this great wilderness was consumed by a web of roads and pipelines, drilling rigs and industrial facilities." Carter was president for four years and during those four years Carter accomplished many great things for the American people. Those who liked Carter as president are most likely sympathizing with what Carter is feeling and those who did not like them have some form of loyalty to him. Carter also connects the American people to the problem of oil drilling because some are being affected by it. "Having visited many aboriginal peoples around the world, I can empathize with the Gwich'ins' struggle to safeguard one of their precious human rights." The citizens of America should be inclined to side with the former father of the United States because he is fighting for the rights of fellow American people. Although Carter is an important figure, he also becomes one of the citizens becasue he "empathizes" with his fellow Americans. Carters time as presidents helps make his argument important to many people because he is an important person.
