The horror film Jennifer’s Body(2009) attempts to undermine the power of the classic horror movie characteristic of the women being terrorized. Setting up Jennifer as a powerful figure who feeds off men sexually to make herself stronger. She is represented in many ways as the male construct and or view of the women. Highlighting her beauty, sexuality and monstrous aspects. Contrasting Jennifer is Needy, who is the run of the mill highschool girl. Who is intelligent, conservative and responsible. In which represents the actual woman. I will be contrasting how Jennifer is portrayed as the man’s view of the woman, who is consequently portrayed in the aspects of the monstrous feminine, to the reality of the woman who is portrayed by Needy.

The fact that women can create life through the abject notion of birth and create polluting objects such as menstrual blood. Which is looked at as shocking or terrifying in being suppressed by our male dominated society. In addition to the already permeable and abject body the female is looked at as more so abject than the male given the role of the female in the life cycle. In horror films this concept is exaggerated in many ways to reflect men's societal outlook on women. Specifically in Jennifer’s Body Jennifer is portrayed as the villain that is monstrous in nature as well as being female. Jennifer is strongly directed as a monstrous feminine. After turning into a succubus she gains monstrous abilities and powers. On the surface she is obviously portrayed as a succubus/devil which fills the role of the monstrous feminine on it’s own. But there is much more to be taken into account in the sense of the monstrous feminine than what is on the surface. In order for her to be strong she must feed off the blood of men. In order to do this she lures her prey using her sexualitly. At multiple points in the film it is almost as if the men don’t even have a choice as to not attempting to engage in sexual activity. The movie Dope, written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, follows the story of Malcolm through his senior year of high school in the Inglewood California. He lives in a poor neighborhood, with only his mom, yet he still strives for greatness. He has a couple of friends, and they all love 90’s hip hop culture. They try to do their best to stay out of trouble and away from bullies. Malcolm sees a girl he likes and ends up following her to a drug dealer’s birthday party. When the cops bust the birthday party, he unknowingly goes home with all the drugs and the gun that the drug dealer owns. The reading by Barbara Creed titled “Horror and the Monstrous-Feminine: An Imaginary Abjection”, is an in-depth examination on the role of women in horror films. Creed challenges the commanding patriarchal view, which frequently puts the woman in the position of the helpless victim. She argues that when the feminine is constructed as monstrous, it is frequently done in conjunction with its mothering role and function. Creed’s main thesis supports that the prototype of all cinematic definitions of monstrosity related to the feminine is linked to the woman’s reproductive body. The movie Shock Doctrine revolves around the concept of the same name. The film begins by discussing psychological research on the effects of shock therapy. It is evident that a person under extreme stress and anxiety commonly experienced during a crisis functions and performs inadequately. It is noted that the studies are conducted by a man by the name of Milton Friedman, from the University of Chicago; the studies took place in the past, and some of the subjects are still recovering in the aftermath. From this research, interrogation techniques were learned and the concept of the shock doctrine was formed. Essentially through causing a crisis, the population of a country can be shocked into complying with accepting laws that favors the United States and capitalism. This theory coexists with Friedman’s belief in that government regulation is bad, and through a crisis a country would better itself with deregulation. The video uses Chile as an example and shows how America allowed a crisis to occur in Chile, through coups, interrogations and subterfuge. In the end a new government is formed that allows capitalism. Unfortunately afterwards violence and riots occur, as the rich gain most of the wealth and poverty rises. In addition to Chile, Argentina, Russia and even Iraq underwent the shock doctrine. Almost in every account, poverty rises and violence ends up erupting. The movie ends by showing how the US was in the process of the shock doctrine, and still is but the population has taken notice. Protests such as Occupy Wall Street are some of the initiatives necessary to bring awareness to the problems of class inequalities in order to prevent capitalism from benefitting the rich and increasing the wealth gap among the classes.

In the cult classic “The Night of The Living Dead”, the portrayal of stereotypical gender roles were on display. George A. Romero’s film hinted at subtle references to the roles of Men and Women and depicted the stereotypes America held during the 1960s. Men played the role of protectors and enforcers, while the women played the passive role of homemakers. Romero’s film portrays the sexes, women and men, in their stereotypical behaviors.

The movie Bridesmaids defies the stereotypical role of women by showing the unseen manner-less and crude side of the gender throughout multiple scenes of the film. In each scene the main characters, Annie, Helen, Lillian, Becca, Rita, and Megan, act in obscene ways that are not socially acceptable for women. They all come from different social classes but are forced together for the wedding of Lillian. The gender role of a woman is a very traditional, narrow, and specific idea that does not allow women to be open and crude as they are in this film. The film shows the crude, vulgar, lusting characteristics that are not normally highlighted and acknowledged in films. Scenes like the dueling speech, food poisoning in the dress shop, and the morning after, are all examples of ways this film defies the stereotype and the divide of class by money between the women.

The Three Here’s for Cooking The romantic comedy, Today’s Special, expressed the worries of Indian parents becoming at ease. Also, expressed the struggles a parent faces in search of a better life, the passion and dedication going unnoticed in the work field, and the connection between friends, a lover, and family. However, the film centered its attention more on the development of Samir’s “cold” cooking within the Indian food, with the help of Akbar. In addition, the main actors in the film looked the part and associated with the main idea of the culture of an Indian family. For instance, Samir’s appearance showed he had drifted away from his family’s culture and developed a professional understanding and love for the cooking industry.
Beauty’s sisters marry rich men, who seemingly have acceptably desirable attributes as husbands. One man is detailed as a man of good looks. The other man is noted for having great wit. The two possess qualities most women seek in a husband, but it is indicated in descriptions that the two sisters are both unhappy in their marriages. Although the first husband is handsome, this serves him as a drawback, for he is a narcissist, only concerned with himself. The second husband’s wit is also a severe disadvantage due to the fact he uses his wit to torment other people, including his wife. It is when Beauty reviews her sisters’ marriages and the unhappiness her sisters experience in relation to their husbands that helps Beauty realize The Beast’s true worth and her love for him: “I should be happier with the monster than my sisters are with their husbands; it is neither wit, nor a fine person, in a husband, that makes a woman happy, but virtue, sweetness of temper and complaisance and Beast has all these valuable qualifications.” (9). The juxtaposition made between the husbands and The Beast create the disclosure of the appropriate masculine qualities a man should encompass.
