If she were still alive, she’d still be trying her best to manipulate me into being who she wants me to be.” Jennette McCurdy wrote these lines in her number one New York Times Bestseller “I’m Glad My Mom Died.” Throughout the whole book she writes about her struggle in finding herself and still being her mother’s human Barbie doll. She wanted to really enjoy something and not be pressured into being perfect all the time. McCurdy was born into a Mormon family with a mother who had a hoarding disorder. Her mother was a cancer survivor until she returned and this time her mother could not keep up and lost the race to recovery. McCurdy only wanted to see her mother happy while she was filled with life. The main underlying theme I stated before is freedom. I think I would have a big impact on another reader because it meant that the mom would've never changed and that she would have still been a slave to her mom. There is a connection with the author because the point of view that she wrote the novel in allows the reader to see first hand the way she felt and the situation she was in. I think the topic of the book allows the reader to connect with her. She shares something that is an important part of her life for people to experience alongside her and through her eyes. She was a very famous actress in the early 2000’s and knowing what she went through opens their eyes. The point of view she told the story in one could feel what the author felt in the moment of the memory that she was retelling to the reader. Part of the story that was frustrating was the mother because she treated her only daughter like an object and not like a human
