The differences between a doll's house and raisin in the sun

In this essay I will be comparing two playwrights, A Raisin in the Sun and A Doll’s House, to one another. I will also compare the two to modern time and talk about whether or not over time our society has changed any. Each of these plays has a very interesting story line based in two very different time eras. Even though there is an 80 year time gap the two share similar problems and morals, things you could even find now in the year of 2016. In the following paragraphs I will go over the power of time and what we as a society have done to make a change.

succeed in keeping the man’s job, she realizes that she hasn’t been living a true life (Isben). She realizes that her whole life she has never had to make an important decision because she has always aloud a man to make it for her, whether it was her late father or her former husband deciding. It was as if she was just their toy they could drag along to make their life seem better, she even goes to refer herself as her father’s little doll ( hence the title of the story). Nora is looked at as Torvald’s wife and nothing more and she thinks nothing of it until the end, she’s even proud to paly such a role (Ibsen). A Raisin in the Sun is placed in the year 1959 and is a story about a family and the effects money has on them when they are given the inheritance of 10,000 dollars after the passing of Big Walter the husband of Lena Younger and father of Beneatha and Walter Lee Younger.
The story also focuses in on Ruth Younger the wife of Walter Lee, it shows the place she holds in the house and the position she holds to her husband. Walter looks at Ruth as though he is her superior; he only goes to her for help when he wants to sweet talk his mama into giving him the money. Mama on the other hand holds power over her son and doesn’t allow him to treat her or any women like the way he tries to with Ruth. Women in this story show progress in women equality, but when reading you can tell there isn’t much hope and support in their fight. For example Beneatha is going to college to become a doctor and she is often doubted in succeeding all due to the fact that she is black African American woman, her going to college in general was odd in most people’s eyes at the time “a waste of money” they would say, at least that’s what her brother would say. Another example where Beneatha is degraded is when she’s with her boyfriend George Murchison whom merely just looks at her as arm
candy. Another problem they face in A Raisin in the Sun is racism; the Younger family is faced with multiple accounts of it throughout the story. At the beginning Ruth feels ill so Mama (Lena) tells her to take the day off, but Ruth states that if she does that her boss will have a fit going on about how her “girl” didn’t come into work and how she needs a replacement (Hansberry). This shows how replaceable and unimportant Ruth’s job was; Ruth Lena and Walter all three have jobs like such. These jobs though were really the only ones African Americans were able to get at the time. A more clearly shown at of racism in the playwright would be when Karl Linder came to talk to the Youngers near the end. He went to their apartment on behalf of the Clybourne Park community and offered to pay the family off so they wouldn’t move into their new home. He said “I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities” (Hansberry). I mean he has clearly just stated that they do not want a black family moving into their neighbor, thinking that it would make the neighborhood worse in some god forsaken way. During these time periods there was distinct discrimination, whether it is against your race, gender, religion, age, or really anything else; and there still is discrimination today. Sure it has gotten better since then in many ways, but just the fact that there still is discrimination makes it just as bad as it was then. People like to say that over time we have evolved as a culture, but have we truly evolved or just gotten better at hiding our wrongs. There is still hope though for equality in our world I just don’t think it’ll come at a time where we’re still alive, they say history repeats itself let’s just hope discrimination can skip that and just find an end. So overall you find a few major similarities in the playwrights, things that you can still find today. And though they are not good they are getting better and you could tell that through the 88 year time gap between the two stories that the difference found some progress. People have found their voice and they’re fighting for what’s right, so I have no doubt that discrimination can end and equality can begin we just need to continue to stick together so we can see results.
In The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and in A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, majority of the characters have dreams. Many of the dreams that reveal in the stories are unrealistic to come to a reality, considering where they come from, their backgrounds, and the environment around them. In The House on Mango Street, the main character Esperanza struggles to find her true identity and wishes she was a grown up making her own decisions and experiencing new things. While in Raisin in the Sun, Walter thinks he has everything under control, and only does what is best for him, not what is best for his family. During the two moves, The Glass Menagerie and A Raisin in the Sun some of the characters are strange and diverse, but the similarities and difference of their views, values, and problems, could be universal. It is universal since people all over the world have the same issues, thoughts, and reactions. Even in my life, finances, success, and family are of utmost concern. The characters in The Glass Menagerie are Amanda, Laura, Tom, and Jim. And the characters in A Raisin in the Sun are Mama, Ruth, Benitha, and Walter Lee. The characters I enjoyed the most is Amanda and Tom and Mama and Walter Lee. I would examine the mothers and the sons of each move.
Ruth was being prevented from having a baby because of money problems, Walter was bringing him self down by trying to make the liquor store idea work. Once Mama decided to buy the house with the money she had received, Walter figured that he should further go on with the liquor store idea. Then, when Walter lost the money, he lost his dignity and tried to get some money from the “welcome party” of Cylborne Park. Mama forced him to realize how far he went by making him show himself to his son how low he would go. But he showed that he wasn’t susceptible to the ways the racism created.
The plays, The Glass Menagerie and A Raisin in the Sun, deal with the love, honor, and respect of family. In The Glass Menagerie, Amanda, the caring but overbearing and over protective mother, wants to be taken care of, but in A Raisin in the Sun, Mama, as she is known, is the overseer of the family. The prospective of the plays identify that we have family members, like Amanda, as overprotective, or like Mama, as overseers. I am going to give a contrast of the mothers in the plays.
Women and men are not equal. Never have been, and it is hard to believe that they ever will be. Sexism permeates the lives of women from the day they are born. Women are either trying to fit into the “Act Like a Lady” box, they are actively resisting the same box, or sometimes both. The experience of fitting in the box and resisting the box can be observed in two plays: Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” and Henrick Ibsen’s “A Doll House”. In Hansberry’s play, initially, Beneatha seems uncontrolled and independent, but by the end she is controlled and dependent; whereas, in Ibsen’s play Nora seems controlled and dependent at the beginning of the play, but by the end she is independent and free.
Walter and Beneatha’s relationship is very complex. The spiraling tension between the two siblings causes confrontation to form and creep into the Younger household. Walter needs his family to respect him as the man of the family, but his sister is constantly belittling him in front of his mother, wife, and son. This denigrating treatment taints Walter’s view of himself as a man, which carries into his decisions and actions. Beneatha also subconsciously deals with the dysfunctional relationship with her brother. She desires to have her brother’s support for her dream of becoming a doctor, yet Walter tends to taunt her aspiration and condemns her for having such a selfish dream. Mama as the head of the family is heartbroken by the juvenile hostility of her adult children, so in hopes to keep her family together she makes the brave move of purchasing a house. Mama’s reasoning for the bold purchase was,“ I—I just seen my family falling apart….just falling to pieces in front of my eyes…We couldn’t have gone on like we was today. Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard were famous for the way in which they depicted the changing of cultures. Both plays act as a sort of social commentary during times of widespread liberation, and use the contortive nature of these seemingly stereotypical characters’ actions to speak about groups of people as a whole. Throughout the course of both plays, this subversion of how different groups of people were typically perceived created a distinct contrast which often shocked and appalled audiences of the time. However, the effects of these plays were felt long after they were presented.
African American women's roles throughout the 1950’s were strictly domesticated by man and society, leaving Beneatha inferior. Beneatha and women alike in this time period were taught to disregard or ignore any type of self-diligence. Benny is forced to be apologetic for the dreams she so dearly desires, (Dropping to her knees) “Well – I do – all right? – thank everybody! And forgive me for ever wanting to be anything at all! (Pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” (1.1.123). The expectation for women was and still is to subdue their thinking of great matters in life. Beneatha is forced to be ashamed for having dreams. In Walter’s eyes her dream of becoming a doctor seems too far-fetched. With this
A Doll House gives us a true insight into the roles for men and women during the late 1800’s. This is why the play has been said to be able to take place in any and all suburbs. At this point in history, the roles of gender were mainly consistent across the world. Men vs. women in economics, social status, gender rights, marriage and divorce, and occupation can best describe this.
Those of you who have just read A Doll's House for the first time will, I suspect, have little trouble forming an initial sense of what it is about, and, if past experience is any guide, many of you will quickly reach a consensus that the major thrust of this play has something to do with gender relations in modern society and offers us, in the actions of the heroine, a vision of the need for a new-found freedom for women (or a woman) amid a suffocating society governed wholly by unsympathetic and insensitive men.
“A Doll’s House” gives the reader a firsthand view at how gender roles affected the characters actions and interactions throughout the play. The play helps to portray the different struggles women faced during the 19th century with gender roles, and how the roles affected their relationships with men as well as society. It also helps to show the luxury of being a male during this time and how their higher status socially over women affected their relationships with woman and others during this time period.
In its historical context A Doll’s House was a radical play which forced its audience to question the gender roles which are constructed by society and make them think about how their own lives are a performance for Victorian society.

This play was controversial at the time it was written, shocking conservative readers. But, at the same time, the play served as a rallying point for supporters of a drama with different ideas.
