Maybe it was a troubling childhood. As stated in the Graphic Novel My Friend Dahmer “When Jeff’s parent’s arguments got too loud, he fled the house”. (Derf Backderf, 2017, p. 208). Possibly a dysfunctional family home, or the many pills that his mother was prescribed while pregnant. I believe Dahmer grew into this lifestyle, due to the Labeling Theory, Differential Association Theory, Behavior Theory and Attachment Theory. Dahmer grew up in a household, with a mother who was suffering from depression and attempted suicide, and a father who was always busy with work as a …show more content…
He also had a younger brother named David. Dahmer was described as quiet and shy during his time in school. As stated by his Classmate Backderf “Jeff was a quiet kid. Very shy, very introverted, and very introverted. He was also very troubled. He was a kid who was very, very lost." As a child, Dahmer exhibited a weird interest in dissecting animals and animal bones. As stated in an article by A&E “He and his dad, as a father-son activity.bleached the connective tissue and the hair” off rodents’ corpses when they found animals who’d died under their house, says Wahlstrom. This could have possibly been the start of his downward spiral. As stated in the novel My Friend Dahmer “He started with a large insect collection and then around the age of twelve graduated to collecting roadkill.” (Derf Backderf, 2017, p.
Dahmer was a pretty normal, but very lonely kid. His loneliness followed him throughout the course of his life. Never having an intimate friendship or relationship, along with being consumed with confusion over his own sexuality eventually led him to become the household name he is today. From 1978 to 1991, Dahmer murdered 17 boys and men. Not only is he considered a murderer, but he committed (on several occasions) rape and dismemberment. After his later murders, he was found guilty of necrophilia, cannibalism, and permanent preservation of body parts. He is arguably the most well known, gruesome, and intriguing criminal in American history.
Jeffrey Dahmer who is called as a psychopathy, a sex offender, a serial killer was born in West Allis, Wisconsin on May 21, 1960. He was responsible for serial murders of 17 young males in between the years of 1978 and 1991. He usually picked up victims in the gay bar and had sex with them before killing them. By the summer 1991, he started killing one person every week. He was caught on July 22, 1991 when Tracy Edwards who was a survivor and last intended a victim escaped and shopped him to police officers. The officers arrested him after they found several gruesome items such as human skulls and bones which were polished and preserved in his flat. Internal organs were discovered in the fridge and parts of these had been cannibalized. He sometimes nicknamed as the Milwaukee cannibal or Milwaukee monster, because he committed cannibalism, rape, dismemberment and necrophilia. Interesting thing was that he was not only a homosexual, but also he was necrophilia. He was sentenced to a total of 957years in prison and had been incarcerated his time at the Colombia Correctional Facility in Portage, Wisconsin. He was attacked twice in the time. The first attempt was left simple wounds in his neck. The second attack caused by an inmate led him death on November 28, 1994 (CrimeMuseum, 2014).
...nd Dahmer”, Jeff Dahmer would go to school noticeably under the influence, yet somehow go by “unnoticed”. If the teachers were aware of Dahmer’s state, they never took any form of action to discipline him, question him, or be worried with his condition at all. Not once throughout the entirety of the graphic novel does a teacher, student, or parent seem remotely concerned with Dahmer’s well-being. Dahmer fought off the urge to kill many times and did it with the help of no one and nothing other than his own twisted mind, so there is reason to believe any type of assistance from an adult could have been detrimental in the process of Dahmer overcoming his violent urges. Unlike Benjie, Dahmer had no one to look up to and admire. Benjie was eventually able to appreciate and respect Butler Craig as a man who cared enough about him to put Benjie’s life above his own.

This paper explores three criminological theories as to why Jeffrey Dahmer committed his crimes. Although these approaches vary in terms of defining the cause of crime, one thing is certain, there is no single cause of crime; the crime is rooted in a diversity of causes and takes a variety of forms depending on the situation in which the crimes occur. However, the published articles vary in their definitions and uses of Criminological Theory. Rawlins (2005) suggest that the criminal phenomenon is too complex to be explained by a single theory. Other theories suggest differently and; therefore, have varying explanations. This paper examines the Psychological, Biochemical, and Social Process theories to slightly explain Jeffrey Dahmer’s actions.
There was no abuse or trauma that was said to have happened during his childhood; however, it was said that he became more reserved as he grew older. He showed little to no interest in hobbies, but he was fascinated by dead animals. During his high school years, he was heavily abusing alcohol which caused his father to make him enlist in the army. He was soon kicked out and went to live with his grandmother, who then reported that he was showing very odd behavior. His parents got divorced in July of 1978 and this took a negative toll on Jeffrey. Dvorchack states, “During the divorce, Jeffrey Dahmer was left alone. His mother moved to Wisconsin with his younger brother, David; his father had moved out of the house. He was left with no food, no money and a broken refrigerator” (Dvorchack). By that time, Jeffrey was already18 and had just committed his first murder. Between 1978-1991, Jeffrey Dahmer had killed over 17 males. Some would say his parents’ divorce and rejection is what caused Jeffrey to get out of hand. Secondly, the standard way of thinking about the topic of serial killers has it that from the day they’re born, they’re going to grow up with the traits of a stereotypical killer. Another
