Being a pianist presents itself a variety of opportunities, two common ones being playing in a jazz ensemble/band, or accompanying a choir. One may choose to be one, the other or both at the same time. However, there are distinct comparisons and contrasts between the two. Both are vastly different from each other, each harboring distinct qualities, yet there are similarities between the two.
An important aspect to playing the piano are the musical components that go into each piece. These components being harmonies, underlying tones, etc. When playing in a jazz band, the piano works in tandem with the other sections, specifically the rhythm section. In this setting, the piano works with the other sections to create harmony and

In a jazz band, the piano player has some leniency, due to the fact that they can rely on the other members of their section and band when it comes time to play. In jazz, especially for pianists, it is quite easy to make mistakes and play wrong notes. If a mistake occurs, the pianist has the luxury of relying on the other members to hide the mistake or to adapt to the mistake. As a result, interdependency and teamwork become huge advantages for the jazz pianist. This interdependency and teamwork plays well for facets of music that pertain specifically to jazz, i.e improvisation. However, the choir accompanist doesn’t always have that luxury of interdependency. While there are some exceptions, choir accompanists typically are alone, they don’t have any other instrument to rely on if mistakes occur during performance. By working alone, as a sole instrument accompanying a choir, the pressure is on for the pianist to perfect the piece, as the choir relies solely on the pianist and the director in order to get timing, harmonies, and melodies perfect. The choir accompanist is at a loss of interdependency, as there is no one for the pianist to depend on other than the choral director and
Large bands, full of unique instruments and amateur musicians, were required to play at festivals and ceremonies. Similar to the evolution of the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band is derived from military purposes. Instruments, such as the trumpets, horns, and drums, were often used for signaling. In contrast to Wind Ensemble musicians, these Concert Band musicians never played their instruments for military enjoyment.
The jazz band I observed played a series of six different songs. Although all the songs were categorized as jazz, each song had its own special style and sound to it. The band consisted of three different players. Paul Meyers, the guitarist and composer, Andy Eulau, the bassist, and Dave Rataczak, on drums. The songs performed were entitled “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter, “Once I Loved” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Stars” by Paul Meyers, “Blues for Mel” also by Paul Meyers, “Last Night When We Were Young” by Harold Arlen, and “Samba Novo” by Luis Eca.
Swing music also incorporated a variety of new instrumental roles, seeing the piano transition from a rhythm-keeper in bands to an instrument
When comparing the piano works of Frederick Chopin and Robert Schumann, it is important to take into account the number of works each wrote in comparison to their other outputs as a composer. Chopin wrote almost exclusively for piano but this was far from the case with Schumann.
The two concerts that I chose to go see were Stanislaus State Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensembles & Combos Concert. These two concerts are both very similar yet different in their own ways. Each piece also has many attributes to contribute and it was fun being able to watch two very different genres.
In band, you learn so much more about how to read music, understand it, and apply that knowledge
The piano is the most commonly known and most used. The saxophone has the ability to produce a unique sound. The clarinet has a reed connected to the mouthpiece, which the player blows through to create music. The trumpet is another a popular instrument. The trombone is descended from the trumpet that’s with played in bass clef or treble clef. With the larger size the double bass, the player usually has to stand up. The drums include the bass drum, snare drum, and cymbals. Last but not least, it’s good to have a vocalist because songs will sound
Jazz involves vast amount of different instruments, for example clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone and so on. While playing jazz, the percussion instruments are also an important part, like double bass, drums and piano. All of these instruments work together as a whole, and then the
On Wednesday, October 26, 2016, there was a combo jazz ensemble that performed at the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall. The jazz ensemble consisted of Josh Holland on trumpet, Andrew Venet on bass, J. Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation where immediate action is taken when composing music without any preparation. By improvising, one is taking music to a new, personal level with great creativity and using your imagination to be free and express your emotions and ideas.
Jazz is a music genre that is very rich in culture which is why I decided to attend a Jazz concert. This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? I looked into the era of when most of those people
Successful pianists, such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky composed thousands of pieces of music, that transcend time, influence modern composers, and bless the ears and minds of billions of people. Vladimir Horowitz, a classical pianist, once said, “The piano is the easiest instrument to play in the beginning and the hardest to master in the end.” Mastering the piano is a laborious task. It takes years to become sufficient in all aspects of piano playing. Successful pianists are musicians who tackle musical pieces with ease. Anyone can learn to play the piano, but it takes patience, diligence, and enthusiasm to become a successful piano player.
According to Adler, the collaborative pianist “must make sure that his tone lives, sings, mourns and jubilates, caresses and beguiles.” Besides referring to the pianist playing the words and having an equal voice in the Lied duo, the concept of my project, “The Voice of the Piano” also encompasses this search for a variety of tone, to make the piano sing and
From my experience of playing with an orchestra and also a band, I have boosted my team skills, perseverance, responsibility, interaction, and stage fright, all of which are important aspects of being successful in life. While being a part of a band or orchestra, it 's essential that you learn to cooperate with those around you in order to make beautiful music together. The time and effort that it takes in order to learn how to play an instrument teach the qualities of patience and perseverance that almost every musician possesses. Responsibility is also taught while maintaining your instrument in working condition or such as remembering to get to your performance, rehearsals, and making it on time to practice. Being a part of this musical community can also greatly affect anyone 's social skills. Being surrounded by many other musicians who share the same interests as you, makes it easy for a person to open up and create strong
