“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan once said to the press. The great Duke coach, Mike Krzyzewski said, “A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you get them all together, you have a fist.” Basketball is a sport that a team must work as a whole to achieve their goals. To have a successful team, the team must work and flow as one. Some great examples of teams working as a whole is the 2014 NBA Finals champion, the San Antonio Spurs and the 1998 Chicago Bulls. Basketball as a sport is the third most played sport only behind soccer and cricket. There are some paintings from the Mesoamerican people showing them playing a sport where they are shooting a ball through a small stone hole on a wall. It was a combination of basketball, football, and soccer. Your objective was to get the ball through the hole on the wall, like basketball, it was as physical as football, and you were allowed to use any part of your body, like soccer. They were the first professional basketball team in the 20th century with five men. They went professional on November 7, 1896, and they were called the Trenton YMCA. The Trentons won their first game against the Brooklyn YMCA, 16 to 1. Trentons’ star player averaged an outstanding nine points per game. The game they played in was more physical than it is now. The referees only called fouls on obvious shoves. The net back then was not open like it is today, so when a team scored a referee had to poke the ball out with a pole. The Trentons played the game with a twelve foot chain link fence surrounding the court, because they thought it would speed the game because of out of bounds. People started questioning the fence when players body checked other players into the fence. The Trentons played in the Pro Hoops League and won back-to-back titles in 1889-90. They then joined the National Basketball League in 1898 when it was created. All of the teams were within seventy miles of one
