“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan once said to the press. The great Duke coach, Mike Krzyzewski said, “A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you get them all together, you have a fist.” Basketball is a sport that a team must work as a whole to achieve their goals. To have a successful team, the team must work and flow as one. Some great examples of teams working as a whole is the 2014 NBA Finals champion, the San Antonio Spurs and the 1998 Chicago Bulls. Basketball as a sport is the third most played sport only behind soccer and cricket. James Naismith’s creativity helped establish the most entertaining sport of all time, but all great things start small. …show more content…
There are some paintings from the Mesoamerican people showing them playing a sport where they are shooting a ball through a small stone hole on a wall. It was a combination of basketball, football, and soccer. Your objective was to get the ball through the hole on the wall, like basketball, it was as physical as football, and you were allowed to use any part of your body, like soccer. The Mesoamerican people sometimes played the game only allowing one to take three steps before they had to pass. They played with a ball called an ulama, or a big rubber ball. Many players wore an urban, or a protective …show more content…
They were the first professional basketball team in the 20th century with five men. They went professional on November 7, 1896, and they were called the Trenton YMCA. The Trentons won their first game against the Brooklyn YMCA, 16 to 1. Trentons’ star player averaged an outstanding nine points per game. The game they played in was more physical than it is now. The referees only called fouls on obvious shoves. The net back then was not open like it is today, so when a team scored a referee had to poke the ball out with a pole. The Trentons played the game with a twelve foot chain link fence surrounding the court, because they thought it would speed the game because of out of bounds. People started questioning the fence when players body checked other players into the fence. The Trentons played in the Pro Hoops League and won back-to-back titles in 1889-90. They then joined the National Basketball League in 1898 when it was created. All of the teams were within seventy miles of one
How do you measure the greatness of the two biggest NBA superstars of all time? Michael Jordan is significantly known for being the ultimate basketball player in NBA history. However, LeBron James is considered one of the top basketball players in the NBA now. There inspiring leadership and unbelievable talent on the court makes it hard for us to choose a winner. Basketball was invented by a man named James Naismith. He was born in 1861 in the United States. Naismith was a high school sports coach in Massachusetts. He was a sporty guy. People took him as a religious man, because he was.
Although the 1992 Olympic Men’s Basketball Team is considered the greatest assemblage of professional athletes in history, the Dream Team does have its critics. Regardless of the bureaucratic problems that stemmed from allowing NBA players to compete in the Olympics, many benefits were reaped by intertwining the two associations. Even though the basketball that was played with the Dream Team did not differ fundamentally, it changed the game of basketball forever because it respected the historical values, inspired young basketball players to pursue their NBA and Olympic dreams, and it treated book reviewers to an action-packed topic whilst also changing international basketball for the better.
Mesoamerican game which was played by a lot of people including the Mayans. It might have been invented by the ancient Olmec civilization. It was a very important part of the Aztec's way of living, not only because it was entertaining, but also because of political and religious reasons.
Basketball was born in 1891 in the United States, specifically at the University of YMCA, Springfield (Massachusetts), where they studied the career of Physical Education and taught practical courses in athletics, rugby, cycling and gymnastics. James Naismith, professor of Physical Education, wanted to create a team sport that could be practiced in the gym during the winter cold. After analyzing the sports that were practiced at that time, such as rugby, football, baseball, etc., he wrote eleven rules of a game, which today is known as Basketball. Naismith placed two baskets of peaches nailed to the ends of a track, 3'05 m above the ground. From here arose the name of basketball (basketball), English compound word that defines the goal of the
Many of us know of the fun game of basketball, the object of the game is to basically run up and down the court and shoot the ball, and block the other team when they try to score. LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, some of the most talented athletes to walk the earth. These men don’t play soccer or baseball, they play basketball. Basketball, some call it the sport of legends others say the game of kings, still others say it’s boring, but really no one likes those people, and no one ever will. This is the origin of the game of basketball.
Have you ever wondered who created basketball? What the original rules were? How it has changed since it was first invented? Maybe even if different cultures played it and how they did? The game of basketball is a highly recognized and widely known sport. Basketball was first heard of in the winter of 1891 when a man by the name of James Naismith was told to instruct a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was instructed to put together a game for young men to enjoy while they were at the YMCA. While trying to come up with a brilliant and fun game for these young men, Naismith reminisced back on his childhood in Canada. He remembered a game his friends and him had played all the time: “Duck on a Rock”, which involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. Naismith also remembered watching a game of rugby going on in the gymnasium. The game of Rugby involved tossing a ball into a box. After a very short time of trying to make up a game for these young men, Naismith came up with a brilliant idea. Little did he know the game that he came up with just so happened to be one of he most renowned sports in American history. Naismith’s idea pertained to nailing up raised boxes so that players could attempt to throw a ball in the basket. When there were no boxes too be found, he used peach baskets. Supposedly, Naismith came up with all the rules for this game in no more than “about an hour”, according to Alexander Wolff. Shortly after Naismith had invented the game of basketball, graduates of the YMCA traveled internationally which is the main reason as to why this sport is so widely known. The impact basketball has made on the lives of many Americans is incredible in the sense that it has given people the ability to ...
The sport basketball was created in 1981 and has grown to be one of the most popular sports to be played worldwide. To think that this life altering activity was thought of by only one man, Dr. James Naismith, a Physical Instructor at the YMCA Training school. Which was in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was under the instructions of the head physical education board when he had the brilliant idea. He was given an enduring two weeks to come up with an indoor game that would give an “athletic distraction” for a jumpy class to participate in through the harsh winter approaching them. All he had was his own mind and a small indoor space to some how create a new game to be played. Naismith succeeded and his creation is now a big time sport played by millions all around the world.
During the summer of 1992, the NBA took center stage as the world watched the greatest team in sports ever assembled joke, pose, and finally play its way to the gold medal at the summer Olympic games. The team was named the “Dream Team” and it featured eleven of the NBA’s best players. Names like Michael Jordan, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Larry Bird headlined the games and the play of Scottie Pippen and “Sir” Charles Barkley stole the show. After only eight games, the world of USA basketball would never be the same. Since 1992 two more teams called themselves the “Dream Team” and two were simply labeled as “Team USA” but one thing is for certain, International basketball has taken a step in the right direction thanks in part to the NBA and its Dream Team era. Over time the faces of those players may have changed, but the goal has always stayed the same and that’s the goal of bringing home the gold medal.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
I adore basketball. That also reminds me of this quote: “Athletes are driven by commitment. To their sport. To themselves. To excellence itself. Commitment fuels the extra mile. The final set. The last quarter. Going on when the body begs to stop. A winner makes commitments. A loser makes promises. Even when you’ve played the game of your life. It’s the feeling of teamwork that you’ll remember. You’ll forget the plays. The shots. And the scores. But you’ll never forget your teammates. BASKETBALL. My anti-Drug.” I like that quote, but I cannot say I fully agree with it. Anyways, I can think of many basketball lovers, but ones that truly are, will not give up on themselves. They will have the patience and the mind to dribble the ball steadily, reach for success, but capture their dreams. Life is a basketball court.
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. Basketball is one of the interesting sports I have always wanted to engage myself; even as a little child. It was a dream come true when I started playing basketball in my high school. Moreover, I was very good in it, and I became the team leader. Of course, I enjoyed every bite of the time I spent playing basketball.
