The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. I am writing my first entry aboard this incredible vessel today, primarily because I have been spending the last three days exploring the sections open to my fellow third-class passengers and I. What I have seen is extraordinary, especially when first boarding the ship. The halls and staircases of the first class section were like nothing I had ever seen before in my life. They were blanketed in luxury from end to end. The first class passengers I had managed to see wore their best garments boarding the ship and were conversing with each other about their rich lives back home. I believe I even saw Mr. John Jacob Astor, a man I had heard much about for his contributions to the American fur trade. I had heard that he would be aboard for the maiden voyage of ...
he fact that his work was compelling, powerful and had a purpose. Take for example his speech titled, “The Need for Continuing Anti-Slavery Work”. It was written in May of 1865 at the thirty-second annual Meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society. During his speech he stresses the importance that the Abolition community must continue their work for the rights of African Americans and the once again advocates for black enfranchisement. When supporting his stance on the continued work of the American Anti-Slavery Society Douglass wrote, “I take this ground; whether this Constitutional Amendment is law or not, whether it has been ratified by a sufficient number of States to make it law or not, I hold that the work of Abolitionists is not done...while the black man is confronted in this legislation of the South by the word “white”, our work as Abolitionist, as I conceive it, is not done”. This speech reveals that during the period that Douglass and Oakes claim that Douglass was lost, he was still an enthusiastic advocate for African Americans. At the same time, these few lines from the speech contradict what Douglass says in The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. It can be easily seen that he clearly did not believe that the
JFK's inaugural address was very inspirational and these are just some important factors that I found to be interesting. His speech used strong words but they were very understandable. It would have been a joy to actually experience being there for this speech.
