Jake Barnes as Hemingway Code Hero in The Sun Also Rises
The portrayal of heroism is an essential aspect of literature, and
every writer delineates his heroes through their ability to triumph over
adversity. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) consistently defined and distinguished
his heroes through an echoing set of characteristics that form a characteristic
"Hemingway Code Hero." A Code Hero is one that distinguishes himself by his
ability to demonstrate grace under pressure, to adhere to a strong set of
personal values and, most importantly, to live life to the fullest. In
Hemingway's first novel, The Sun Also Rises (1926), the protagonist Jakes Barnes
serves as a controversial example of a Code Hero. Jake fits into the category of
a Hemingway Code Hero because he embodies the most significant characteristics
of a quintessential Code Hero: he demonstrates his manhood through the ability
to endure pain with dignity, he imposes order upon his chaotic world through
personal values, and he attempts to enjoy the simple pleasures of life to add
meaning to his existence.
Hemingway characterized the Code Hero as "a man who lives correctly,
following the ideals of honor, courage, and endurance in a world that is
sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful" (Dwiggins). The most
essential characteristic of a Code Hero is the capacity to exemplify grace under
pressure, and Hemingway continually placed his characters into unfortunate, and
often tragic, situations to test their ability to survive. Hemingway's primary
focus was therefore on the strained individual and his response to adversity. ...

code, and to embrace every opportunity to its full potential are the vital
characteristics that typify a Code Hero. Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises
relentlessly strives to set the societal standard through his stoicism,
morality, and action; therefore, his exemplification of these qualities
characterizes him as a true Hemingway Code Hero.

The character of Jerry Renault can easily be classified as a hero in my opinion. Jerry stands up for what he believes is right and says no to Brother Leon.
Everyone has their own perception on what defines a hero; some may argue that they exhibit characteristics such as honesty or courage, while others may think that heroes have special power. Our society may have changed the values in which we associate heroes with, but one thing seems to have never changed: the main character of the book turns out as the hero. In my analyst, Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, is put on trial as we see through our own eyes how Caulfield can not be considered a hero in modern society.
"Is Sammy a heroic character?" I was asked this question and I'm here to argue it. Sammy isn't heroic because he makes abominable choices.
In this essay I have only shown three, but there are so many more and the traits of a hero are not only restricted to people who save lives, chase bad guys, or change the world. He overcame constant pressures with his determination, led a whole team with his outstanding leadership, and never gave up thanks to his passion. He is a hero to many, no cape, or superpowers needed. So now it’s up to you, is he, or is he not, a
D.J. Dowrick (”Earthquake Risk Reduction”in Wiley) explains that seismic hazard is any physical phenomenon associated with an earthquake that may produce adverse effects on human activities. Earthquakes occur very suddenly without any warning. Thus, earthquake not only destructs people’s living environment, but also affects people’s mental health. People are more scared of earthquake. In 2010, there are two severe earthquakes, which are Haiti Earthquake and Chile Earthquake. Both of these two earthquakes produced the various impact considerably across countries and regions. The purpose of this essay is to analyse those two earthquakes according to knowledge such as why they occur, how strong they are, and what the impact they made. Even though people still can not predict earthquake, through analyse earthquakes, they can prevent it bring huge losses.
He respected and cherished the lives he met on his journey. A code hero does exactly this, show loyalty and honor to the people they meet. Similarly, the code hero has been shown to view things positively, which is very true in the case of Chris McCandless. Throughout his journey he faces immense hardships such as lack of food, dangerous weather, and the attempt of survival in the Alaskan wilderness. Chris takes these factors and doesn’t complain or get angry. Instead he remains relatively calm and fights through all situations. This is the determination and drive found within a code hero. But the one determining factor that greatly shines McCandless as a true code hero is the way in which he perishes. Chris had been surviving in the Alaskan wilderness for weeks, but due to a possible poisoning from the mold found on potato seeds, Chris became severely weak and ill. In the final chapter of Chris’s life, he writes, “I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!” Similar to Harry, Chris does not experience pain during his death, instead proclaiming that he has had a happy life, and doesn’t regret
The Renaissance is a period in Europe, from the 14th to the 16th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the change from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
In Haiti, building codes and regulations are all but nonexistent, so the minimum safety standard is not sufficient for people to be dwelling in the buildings. Since there is not a lot of wood available due to deforestation, concrete is the primary building material used for most of the structures, according to Alan Dooley, a Nashville architect (Fountain, 2010). Concrete is costly and the cement
Frequently throughout Hemingway's use of heroes there are two behaviors or types of heroes that he uses, these are the "Hemingway Hero" and the "Code Hero". The Hemingway hero is usually a masculine man who drinks, loves hunts and bullfights, and has war injuries.
In the novel The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, the lost generation is discussed. After the WWI, many were affected in different ways. This post-war generation is described by discrimination, lack of religion, escapism and inability to act.
What is a hero? Do they put the bad guys in jail and make the community a better place? There are many ways to define what a hero is and who is worthy to be called a hero. Bill Gates is an international hero. Son of a successful lawyer, and whose mother was a businesswoman, expectations for Bill were surely high. Since the age of 13 he created several programs some that included hacking his school’s computer system, and some for his school, which included one that was able to collect every teacher’s attendance. After attending Harvard University for two years he dropped out with his high school alongside classmate Paul Allen, who attended Washington State University. Three traits that make Bill Gates worthy to be called a hero are his passion for what he does, fearless despite his drastic decision to drop out of college, and his commitment to give back to people who are in need.
January 12, 2010 became the moment of tragedy for the population of Haiti: an earthquake of terrible force stroke the small island, killing and injuring thousands of people. The earthquake turned into a devastating power, destroying everything in the epicenter and miles beyond. It was the most powerful earthquake in Haiti in more than 100 years. Now, several months after the tragic event, Haitian authorities still work to restore the economic and social stability in the region. Earthquakes are difficult to predict the Haiti earthquake did not have any warning signs or foreshocks. It was equally unexpected and powerful. The aftershocks that followed confirmed the complexity of the natural processes that usually occur during earthquakes.
Earthquakes are measured typically by the Richter scale the levels on the Richter scale are 2.5 or less usually not felt, 2.5-5.4 often felt minor damage, 5.5-6.0 slight damage to buildings and structures, 6.1-6.9 may cause excessive damage in overpopulated areas, 7.0 - 7.9 major earthquake with serious damage, 8.0 or greater is a great earthquake which can totally destroy communities near the epicenter. Even before the terrible earthquake Haiti was one of the poorest countries with over 70 percent of population living under the poverty line. The United States is only at a 14.5 for our poverty rate putting Haiti very far ahead of us. Since the earthquake 500,000 still remain homeless because rebuilding will cost a lot of money they still simply don’t
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince. An estimated 230,000 to 316,000 (depends on the source) people died from the earthquake. Over 300,000 people were injured. This means that over half of the Haitian population suffered directly at the hands of the earthquake. About 1.5 million people were displaced as a result of the earthquake, as their homes and shacks were all destroyed. There are a number reasons that contribute to these incredibly high numbers of affected people, which will be explored below.
The Renaissance consisted of and created many thinkers and inventors that altered society’s perspectives and their way of life. It shed light to fields of study that were ignored in the Middle Ages and presented new values that would assist in numerous advancements. The Middle Ages were a dark time; society lacked creativity and was too fearful to think outside the box. However, society managed to shift their views and values by demanding change and the desire to know more about the world they lived in. The Renaissance was ultimately a breeding ground for new types of creators and thinkers. It emphasized abstract personalities, uniqueness, genius, and the need to reach one’s full capacity to fully utilize their capabilities and talents. The people of the Renaissance touched base upon new revelations in all aspects of their daily lives. This ranged from how they think to how their bodies function to where the earth is located in the universe.
