The theme of the book is that all people have the potential for evil. Everyone has the capacity for evil, no matter how nice they are, when there are no rules or punishment for doing the wrong thing. Most people will let evil take over and start doing horrible things, but some people will still be civil even without laws or punishment just because that's what they believe in. People do not know how to act when there aren’t rules keeping them in order so they start acting out of human nature. The character Jack illustrates the claim that all people have evil inside them, and only rules and order can keep them from acting upon it. Jack killed a pig in a very gruesome and horrifying way, he stuck a sharp stick up the pig’s butt to torture it. He then proceeded to cut the pig's head off and put it on a stick in the ground and call it the lord of the flies. This is plain messed up on every level and shows how Jack has lost all connection with his old beliefs that he had when he was governed over. "Grab them!" Jack shouted angrily. "I said 'grab them!" Samneric protested. "Oh, I say!" Jack roared. "Tie them up!" Ralph cried out hopelessly against the black and green mask. "Jack!" Jack yelled, "Go on. Tie them." Jack just kidnapped two little kids and is using them to find out where Ralph is going so he can kill him. Ralph never wanted to join Jack's tribe and he never turned savage, he still resorted to talking not fighting and killing. Piggy asked, "What you goin' to do, Ralph? This is just talk without deciding. I want my glasses." Ralph responded, "I'm trying to think. Supposing we go, looking like we used to, washed and hair brushed--after all we aren't savages really and being rescued isn't a game" Ralph is still talking about washing up to go talk to the people who just stole from him. Ralph doesn't even want to cause a fight with the other tribe because he wants to resolve everything peacefully. He always wanted to have a signal fire going so they could all get rescued. Even though Jack and his tribe had gone savage, he still wanted everyone to get rescued. He was not selfish and he wanted the best for everyone even if they had let evil take control of
