Even though this program has just begun, I am beginning to appreciate the dedication and willingness to instill the fundamental concepts to effectively lead. The orientation last week was a very insightful and eye-opening experience that allowed me to ultimately understand the amount of invaluable skills that are needed to accomplish a single task. For example, one of the tasks was to uncover the exact path to walk from one side to the other without setting off any hypothetical bombs. In that one task, it was important for everyone to exude patience and the willingness to hear a variety of opinions on the right course of action. The ability for all of us to effectively execute a proper plan and work as a cohesive team was the one of the only …show more content…
The first chapter, which outlined his thirteen rules to being a great leader, was very moving because of the examples and analogies that he used to explain his position. In my opinion, the section that elaborates on sharing credit is an important skill to acquire because it is often hard to humble yourself and realize the others that helped aid in the attainment of your accomplishments. Another great lesson He expressed is to always be conscious of who is watching when you are not aware. This saying is very familiar to me because my father always told my brothers and I this multiple times throughout our childhood. This life lesson is critical because you can act accordingly ninety-nine percent of the time and have a lapse in judgement when it matters most. Lastly, the chapters that expound upon mutual respect and the fact that we learn first from our surrounds as a child we’re very enlightening because it reminded me of the morals that were instilled within me by my parents. Furthermore, it is important to me to note that how you treat others with set the mentality for how they execute the tasks at hand. This speaks volumes to the reason why a lot of the successful leaders in the world are admired by their employees and board of directors. All in all, the morals that our parents elected to instill within us are reflective in almost every
One cannot help but think about how these principles can be utilized in one’s personal dealings. Loyalty, decency, and lifting up of your fellows are wonderful ideals to strive for in friendships, marriage, and in the rearing of children. It is difficult to think of any place in our lives that these ideals would NOT be applicable.
Realistically, I actually feel like the most challenging aspect of being an Orientation Leader is making sure that I am aware of my actions at all times because in some cause I will provide students and parents with their first impression of what college can be like. In order to overcome this challenge, I plan to ask my peers for advice and also conduct myself in a manner that shows how tremendous of an individual I am.
It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. I will be using what I have learned in this class still three years from, it is kind of
The most successful way to instill righteous and moral behavior and thoughts is by demonstrating our respectable interactions and honest problem solving approaches during difficult times of our lives. “As adults we should dare to be adults that we want our children to be”. They learn by watching and are quick to mimic our behavior with their peers outside of home. The author writes that “we should strive to raise children who: engage with the world from a place of worthiness, embrace their vulnerabilities and imperfections, feel a deep sense of love and compassion for themselves and others, value hard work, perseverance, and respect, and also move through our rapidly changing world with courage and a resilient spirit” (214, 218-219). All of these elements will help to transform the way we live, love, and
...ts set for them. Children are constantly aware of adults’ choices, and they begin to formulate their own understanding of general values at a young age. When adults are hypocritical of their pre-set standards, it sends children into a state of discombobulation. Staying true to one’s values as an example for children will be beneficial to them as they travel along the highway of childhood and come upon the exit necessary to reach the interstate of adulthood.
My first experience with having a leader to guide and mentor me was positive. SGT Buchan demonstrated what a good leader should be and do. She has helped me develop into the leader I am today. SGT Buchan’s guidance and influence sparked my interests in computers and helped me to set goals for pursuing a career in technical fields. SGT Buchan’s knowledge and dedication to leadership has truly been my motivation to be the best leader that I can be. My leadership philosophy is directly contributed to the skills and knowledge she has shared with me.
Conclusion Ultimately I did a much better job of implementing course material into my approach to leading the project team. Though no formal leadership role was established, I ended up becoming the “point-man.” Instead of viewing this reality as a burden (as I have been) I should make the most of the opportunity to better myself and potentially others. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, I need to make sure that I am meeting and exceeding the demands that the group places on itself and demonstrate that I am motivated.

The very first thing I found during my time with this course is that I often struggle with self-awareness. I must actively seek feedback from my subordinates, peers, and leaders. This will ensure that I am not languishing under a false sense of how I am perceived. It will give me a better picture of who I am as a person and a leader. I will be more open to the feedback given and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Understanding that need for growth both professionally and personally will be important for my career, as well as the career of my “Airmen”. Furthermore displaying the will and desire to change, will impact my effectiveness and its effect on not only my subordinates, but my peers and leaders as well. Seeking feedback will not be enough. It will be my ability to learn and use that feedback to improve as a leader, peer, and subordinate. Ultimately, I wouldn’t expect my subordinate, peers, or leaders to accept my feedback unless I have shown I am capable of doing the same. Leadership by example at all levels is the key!
The combination of class and service learning provided a solid foundation on which to be a morally responsible leader. During class, all sorts of ideas are brought up and discussed as a group and critically analyzing from different perspectives and relating it to other ideas. This enables the students rectify their own beliefs and morals in constructive ways. From these developments, we begin to see how it fits in the world and try to apply ourselves and gain wisdom. Gaining knowledge, experience and wisdom, it becomes our understanding to find good in any aspect of our lives and work towards advancing that good in a way that benefits all.
After this there is chapter two called “The Leader’s Role: What Leaders Do”. It start off with talking about leadership and how it

...it as a class assignment. After reading a bit more, I found myself sneaking off to go read his book. I was amazed that he sacrificed and suffered for his dream at some points for his dream. I thought everything that happened in his life was fascinating. By the end of his book I was wanting more. I researched him more and watched videos of him publicly speaking. I looked up image of his buildings and was amazed by the way they looked. I couldn't believe this beautiful place was a center for low income families to learn new job skills and become successful. His young life was difficult but once he was on his own he needed no one to make his dreams possible. I refused to be told no. I think the rest of my life I will remember reading this book and how inspirational it was. I will never forget his teachings. He shows to always follow your heart and you will be happy.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
...in managing the nature as Hunter Thompson, an American author once quoted that ‘politics is the art of controlling your youth environment’. Specifically, ministers should initiate the practice of being kind indeed by exposing their own daily applications. In varsities, sagacious professors shall necessitate noble practices such as speak nicely, etiquette, manner, and politeness. Teachers in school also included in implementing moral values among youth. Carl Jung, popular psychologist, through his research has stated that youth are more attentive to acts rather than works. So, educationalists have to pursue success in educating youth through acts, for they are the future leaders of the world. Lastly, the teenagers themselves should take an action in changing their attitude and apply more good values in themselves. They can choose what they want to be in the future.
