Research concept Mentoring and coaching in nursing is an area in the field of nursing and medicine which has been overlooked. The implementation and attention it deserves has not been given. In the work place, there is much unprofessionalism and many nurses don’t give it to their best because they have not been mentored and coached. Many nurses are untrained when the start working and don’t have adequate experience to handle most important and serious case in a hospital.

Coaching brings the coachee to a higher level of proficiency since he/she gains new skills and knowledge. The coachee learns a specific skill from the skilled who is the content expert. For mentorship, it seeks out a good atmosphere for the mentoree to share whatsoever grave questions interfere with his or her professional and individual achievement. Although learning competencies may be applied as the foundation of the relationship, mentoring focuses on areas that touch the individual’s life and work. Formal education, practicums, and inductions offer a basis and understanding to mentor and coach the nurses for management roles and evidence grounded exercise (Feeg, 2008). A senior nurse may see management potentials or a gift in a junior nurse and decide to nurture, this makes leadership flows. It becomes easy to handover and provided continuity of care to the culture and performance of the hospital. Coaching and mentoring includes the senior nurse giving practical advice to the junior nurse and demonstrates how to manage a challenging situation. The junior nurse may ask the senior nurse any question that he/she may have and is assured of getting a positive response. The relationships developed during coaching and mentoring results in job satisfaction and contribute to staff retention. Coaching and mentoring has a big impact on the communication skills of the junior nurse. A nurse is accountable and I able to answer any concerns of the patient, their family, and other departments. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
For example, a DNP degree instructor can provide education to MSN or DNP students, therefore, making the student realize the increase level of confidence in clinical, leadership, and application skills that can be gained with a DNP degree. Evidently, this increases the number of DNP degree holders in the long run which subsequently improves patients’ care in nursing practice. DNP- prepared faculty members can act as a model for advanced practice education (Dunbar- Jacob et al., 2013, p.425). Since one of the roles an ARPN is leadership, which also involves with mentoring, other staff members may visualize the ARPN as a role model, thus, enhancing the self-concept of advance nurse
Delegation is the being able to pass the responsibility or authority to another person. This act of delegation is important in the outcome of patient care (Yoon,2016). As discussed to be able to have well developed leadership and management skills a good aid of communication has to be developed. In the workplace environment being able to effectively delegate without having appropriate communication skills therefore emotional intelligence the ongoing care of the patient can be threatened and errors can occur. However, being able to effectively do so enable the patient outcomes to be achieved ( Wong,2013). These skills aid in importance as newly graduate nurses receive student nurses to mentor and supervise. Being able to supervise and manage a student nurse contains having a well-developed leadership and management skills ( Jones,2013). The role of a mentor includes assessing and evaluating the students’ performance, providing supervision and having accountability of the students action( royal college of nursing, 2007). This role a graduate nurse must have an area of leadership and management skills. As If these skills aren't developed the student nurse not only will lack mentorship but also the lack of guidance and supervision can impact on the patients care (
This assignment will be based on continual professional development and will aim to identify a learning need encountered in my previous clinical placement. Through reflecting on my previous placement, I have identified that my lack of knowledge and organisation skills have impacted on my confidence and ability to hand over to qualified nurses. Therefore, the learning need I have identified involves improving my confidence, knowledge and organisation skills, in communication handover with qualified nurses.
It is a useful approach for new nurses as it provides them with effective and systematic support in the nursing practice, facilitates their professional development, and enhances the coordination of care within the unique context of general practice. I do believe that in any organization a new employee need to be familiar with company vision and identity. As Finkelman (2006) stated, “Mentoring, and important career development to that can be used by nurses any type of set or specialty, can be used to develop the critical leadership skills needed by nurses. All successful leaders have had mentors are our mentors” (Finkelman,2006, p. 390).
With patient acuity on the rise and an increase in nursing jobs, it is no surprise that new graduate nurses are being hired to fill these spots. Hiring a new graduate nurse comes with the chance that they are less developed in communication, leadership, organization, critical thinking, handling specific situations, and stress management. However, these weaknesses could be addressed by nurse residency programs, simulation, debriefing, and the use of a mentor.

Mentors are ideal for nursing students and new nurses in providing support and guidance. They are able to provide effective communication, and help ease the transition into the workplace (Shellenbarger & Robb 2016). Furthermore, nursing mentors can help student nurses understand the social aspects and the flow of the hospital which can be pressuring. Nurses must be knowledgeable about the demands of this profession and how to deal with the pressure. Being aware of high demands of healthcare can help new nurses adjust in their positions, and improve quality care for patients. Coaching and mentoring are not about learning to do something the right way, but are about helping to lead an individual to find their own way of doing it practically and efficiently. Coaching and mentoring sessions are guided with theoretical models, which help focus both the coach and the coachee in attaining desired outcomes for problem situations. However, even with the aid of theoretical models not everyone can coach another person. The first and far most important attribute of a coach is the ability to build relationships with the coachee in that the coachee feels safe and trusting towards the coach, without the capability to interact with the client there may be a lack of progress or motivation. Another important skill of a coach is not to judge.
Coaching and mentoring are vital tools in developing the workforce, most especially in enhancing quality practices at the point of care, and also innovating these practices. According to Abiddin (2006), mentoring and coaching are factors which are vital in developing people in their professions. As such, these two are related with career and self development and professional growth (Abiddin, 2006). In line with this assertion, this paper will discuss about the current relevance of mentoring and coaching in nursing in today's healthcare; how it influences both healthcare and nursing; how it is integrated into clinical practice; and how it is used in the clinical setting.
