Home Care Services and Negative Effects of Isolation According to the US Census Bureau, over one-quarter of all seniors over 65 years of age live alone, and the likelihood of living alone increases with age. As the baby boomer generation grows older, it is expected that these numbers will rise since many of those seniors do not have children. Without children or a spouse, seniors may face isolation and loneliness in their golden years. Granted, just because you live alone it does not mean you will be isolated, but AARP notes that the chances of social isolation are much greater for those who live alone. It is simply much easier to retreat from social engagements, and with time retirements, deaths, and mobility issues can lead to isolation or perceived isolation. …show more content…

One of the reasons seems to be that many socially isolated individuals develop depressed immune systems. This puts them at greater risk of illness. Add this to the isolation – nobody is there to help take care of them – and it is no wonder that the death rate is higher. “People who live alone or lack social contacts may be at increased risk of death if acute symptoms develop because there is less of a network of confidantes to prompt medical attention.” Another negative effect of isolation is a decline in mental acuity and cognitive functioning. Dr. John Cacioppo, a neuroscientist and psychologist at the University of Chicago, says, "We evolved to be a social species. It’s hard-wired into our brains, and when we don’t meet that need, it can have physical and neurological effects."
