When she was young, Isadora Smackle believed she lacked the opportunity to have a regular life. Even before she was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, Isadora just knew, no one would actually desire her, platonically or otherwise. She was too blunt, too different, too weird. So she sealed her heart, and focused on being the best genius she could possibly be. After all, making friends would be a fruitless quest, but her extraordinary intelligence would forever be an undeniable fact.

She walks as fast as possible to get away, so fast that she feels as if her legs are on fire. These girls couldn’t possibly be correct about these things could they? But Isadora had never been good as identifying emotions, perhaps they could see something she simply could not. There was a significant chance that they were correct. The did go to middle school with the group, the had seen them grow and change. It hit her like a ton of bricks. Farkle loved Riley, he always has, he always will. Riley just needed to open her eyes. And Isadora Smackle will be forgotten, erased.

Rachel was Melinda's friend all of middle school but she turned out to be a complete jerk to Melinda. Heather was a fake friend who only stuck by her side until she was accepted in a ¨cool¨ group. David Petrakis is a nerd who is almost in every one of Melinda's classes. They grow close mostly because they both have no friends, but he is a true friend. The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.

It’s her own fault that people pick on her, she needs to toughen up. “Shape of a Girl” by Joan MacLeod, introduces us to a group of girls trying to “fit in” in their own culture, “school.” This story goes into detail about what girls will do to feel accepted and powerful, and the way they deal with everyday occurrences in their “world.” Most of the story is through the eyes of one particular character, we learn about her inner struggles and how she deals with her own morals. Melinda transforming the janitor’s closet symbolizes her hiding her feelings and Melinda’s inability to speak and tell people what happened to her. High school can be fun but unfortunately through the eyes of Melinda it was a very hard time.
At her school she was called “inappropriate” (313) by her own teacher. Aimee finally gets prosthetics that she wanted, but soon faces another challenge when her father tells her she must change what she is wearing because people would be able to see her fake legs. When she got to college she began to run track and field and had a successful career of running. She faced yet another challenge when she was asked to go back to her school to speak, but after she explains to him all that she has done he says that the only reason she was respected was because she was vulnerable and she ended up not speaking there.
