In Warriors Don’t Cry I think Melba is a very strong Warrior. I say this because she could have not went to Central High and she could have backed out of it instead of going to all the trouble. Melba knew a lot of white people were going to disagree with integration, especially the kids at school. She knew they were going try to do anything to get rid of her and her friends. But she was prepared and ready for the kids who might or may taunt her and call her bad names and she knew if she prayed every night and asked God to keep her safe and be by her side so that she could get through this year and graduate. Melba didn’t use weapons on any one, she used her words for an example from the story when the kids started to taunt her and called her bad names, Melbas Grandmother told her to say thank you or something nice. So when the boy called her a nigger and she said “Thank You” like he said something nice. She realized that if she did something to hurt them like throw hot soup on one of the guys when he deserved it, he wouldn’t get in trouble, but she would. So Melbe thinks that using words is better than weapons or anything else. Whenever someone tried to do something bad to her, she either tried to get out of the mess without make a big commotion or say something right back to them nicely and after Minnijean got suspended she remembered that she wasn’t here to make fights with the white students, she was here to learn and graduate from Central High. Melba build up a lot of courage when she went to Central High. Even though when the kids taughnt her she even got stronger of saying nice things and her friendliness even grew more than ever. She became stronger after all the incidents have happened to her and she is still going to school everyday and not letting the teachers or kids get in her brain even though some of their sayings are very cruel and mean. But over all I think that Melba was a very brave child. Melba went to the school each morning thinking what they were going to do to her, what prank or bad names they were gonna call her.
Melba went through a lot of battles each day. The kids at Central High School, like to do most to the little rock nine was to prank them a lot each day. They started easy with the pranks but then it started to get worse each day that passed. One of the battles that Melba fought was violence. When she was walking out of the locker room and was all ready for gym to play volleyball with the other white girls, the girls started to taught her and pushed her down and started to kick her hard were blood started to come out of her and also with a lot of scrapes on her knees. Another battle she fought that was the biggest was pranking. Between classes Melba had to go use the restroom and she thought that maybe no one would taunt her there but while she was using the restroom she heard girls giggling in the corner of the bathroom and she wanted to get out of there. But all the sudden when Melba looked up she saw fireball toilet paper coming down on her and Melba tried to swat them away but more kept coming down faster. One of them hit her dress and her new dress that her grandma and mama gave her was ruined. Melba decided to take action so she pick up her book and tried to throw it to aim one of the girls and she got one and then threw one of her other books and she got several girls and then they ran out of the bathroom. In the hallway boys always call her bad names and when she is entering her classes, kids yelling out that “I don’t want to sit near a nigger” Each day Melba had to go through all the hurtful things that the white students were saying to her and the teachers did nothing to stop them from saying all the rude comments. Another battle that Melba fought was torture. When Melba was waiting until all the kids went into their classes, then Melba thought no one would be in the hallways so she went to get to her classes until she saw a guy coming towards her and she look back to her guard where he can't do anything but he whispered to her don’t move. Melba noticed that he caring a cloth and the next thing Melba felt something stinging in her eyes and it was burning her eyeballs. Until her guard came and told Melba that he's going to take her to the bathroom. Once they were there he ran cold water on her eyes where it stopped it from doing anymore damage than it has. Melba realized that her guard saved her from being blind. I think that Melba had it really hard that year.
She didn’t wake up every morning, happy to go to the school and learn more things, instead she felt terrified wondering what was going to happen to her. Some days were not as bad like the others but there was some days that Melba could've really got hurt but she always found a way out without getting too injured. Kids just kept taunting her every moment of the day and the worst part was the teachers didn’t do anything about it. Even though they know she is a child too and that they should care that because she could get badly hurt and it would be the teacher's fault because they didn’t do anything about it or to stop

In the book Warriors Don't Cry, Melba has a very strong support system. Her mother, and her grandmother are very big supporters in this book. In the segregated south, white people had power and black people didn't. These nine black student that entered an all white school had very many people discourage them. Whites talked about them, looked at them, and made fun of them. Melba was one out of the nine black students that attended Central High school, but since she had a very supportive family, she didn't let anyone get to her. With this and many other acts, integration such as Melba showed that the white segregationist was a fragile illusion. In the memoir Warriors Don’t Cry Melba Pattillo Beals illustrates the characteristics of a warrior that are required to fight for social change. Melba has to deal with continuous hatred from whites and blacks, and these unfortunate events morph her into a faithful and courageous warrior.
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
This movie has been reworked from Maya Angelou’s best selling novel and the story takes place in a bigoted town in Stamps, Arkansas where Maya and her brother, Bailey, grow up with their grandmother and uncle. The Angelous were African Americans, they had to deal with racism from the infamous Ku Klux Klan and the other Caucasians in town. Despite disdain from the Caucasians, Maya also has familial problems. She travels back and forth between her mother’s and grandmother’s house not being able to situate herself in either’s home. However, Maya perseveres. She begins school and excels in academics. The turning point of the movie is when Maya is sexually assaulted, consequently, she withdraws into total silence. It is with the help of her kind teacher that Maya is mentally restored to herself: enthusiastic, joyful and bright. She makes an emotional valedictory speech at her graduation where she expressed her feelings and emotions towards her friends, fellow classmates, teachers and life at Stamps. Her eventful time from her youth to her graduation serve to teach a person to define themselves, not for others to define a person.
Melba began her story with her childhood in Little Rock, Arkansas. She lived with her mother, grandma, and brother in a strict and religious household. Her family had come to accept the fact that they would always be mistreated because of their color. In the South this mistreatment of blacks was seen as perfectly normal, but Melba saw things a little differently. As a young girl, she experienced first hand how awful it was to be segregated against and be constantly ridiculed simply because of her color. Unlike most people, though, she wanted to do something about it and prayed for an opportunity that would allow her to fight back and hopefully make a difference.
Elliot tells the story of Dasani, an eleven-year-old living with seven siblings, mother, and father all in one room in the Auburn Family Residence, a worn out city-run shelter for the homeless (Elliot). Auburn Family Residence is covered in mold, roaches, feces, and is where predators prey on small children (Elliot). Dasani takes care of her family, mostly her baby sister, making sure she can give her all she needs. Her parents, Chanel and Supreme, are dysfunctional, unemployed, and have a history of arrest and drugs abuse (Elliot). Although Dasani’s life is very tragic, she still has hope that not only she can make it out of this lifestyle, but also her family will be able to make it out as well. Even though Dasani is homeless, she still manages to go to Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts, where most students are black and live in the surrounding projects (Elliot). In this first part of Dasani’s life, Elliot describes how teachers believe that Dasani is intelligent, even though she sometimes gets in trouble. Since her parents are unemployed, on a good month they receive around a few hundred dollars, but never seem to make it last (Elliot). Not only does this story include very descriptive details about Dasani’s life, but it also includes unsatisfactory descriptive pictures of Dasani’s home and school. The discussion of children and school also gives well meaning of an organized and well-balanced village the people have put together, one the average parent would want their children raised in. “They tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play, and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands (p.445).” The thought of children playing also illustrates of a positive outlook for the rest of the story, a sense of happiness.
I will teach my students the power of not giving up on what they believe in. In this book Warrior Don’t Cry, we to not be afraid the resist the norm, if something is not right we need fight it and make it better. Melba and the other members of the Little Rock Nine was able to bring about change, they was able to shit the power of one group of people over another through resistance. Resistance don’t have to be violent, and can be peaceful. Melba grandma India teaches us all that you can get lot of things do with just passive resistance. Smiling in the face of your enemies at they tried to cause harm to you. Not only show them that you are strong enough to take anything they dish at you but also so you got character. Another lesson I will teach my students is being self-reliance. Melba and the other students had to rely on themselves to survive. They was force to go to school, surrounded by hostile and hateful people. They was also force to lose their friends from their old high school because their friends were afraid to be around them. The black students had to learn to rely more and more on themselves and not on the people around them like family and friends, because at the end of the day they had to protect
After Eleanor returns from gym class, she finds that her locker is covered in pads. One would think that she would react with anger or break down in tears, but, “Instead, she walked past the girls, with her chin as high as she could manage, and methodically peeled the pads off her locker. Eleanor cried a little bit, but she kept her back to everybody so there wouldn’t be a show” (Rowell 55). At school, the people bully Eleanor because of her physical appearance.
