Is girls’ compensated dating harm, exploitation or private gratification? In 2008, a teenage girl, who involved with compensated dating (CD), was killed by one of her clients(杜法祖,2013). The murder immediately evokes a strong repercussion and the society started to pay attention to compensated dating issue. Compensated dating is a term derived from Japanese (enjo-kosai), originally refers to girls promising to date men; It may consist dating activities such as having dinner and watching movies; Sex is not necessary involved in the process, and girls would have received material comforts in return (Li, 2013). This essay will be divided into three parts, discussing why girls’ compensated dating is harm for individual development, society and …show more content…
Since CD girls would charge according to their activities price list, the price list became the embodiment of the self-objectification. In the feminist view, prostitution involved two parties: buyer (men) and object (women) (Barry, 1995). Men are being privileged and powerful while women is an object to fulfill men’s desire(Barry, 1995). The position also appears in CD when girls are paid to satisfy male’s desire of having a girlfriend or sexual service, which suggested the imbalance of power. Therefore, CD is harmful by promoting the inequality of …show more content…
Although some girls see compensated dating as a regular trading, they often ignore the fact that their lost overcomes the gain. Girls who engaged in CD often found to have depression, infection and other threats such as exposure to personal information. The recover from illnesses and protect privacy cost more than few hundreds and thousands that gain from CD. A Japanese teenage girl published a memoir of how she started the path to CD when she was sixteen-year-old. In the memoirs, she said that the money gain from CD will be gone in no time, but things that she lost from CD will never come back. She spends every moment of her life feeling sorry and the memory of CD kept haunting her; every time she tries to forget she felt like losing a piece of her soul (何志安, 2010). Thus we can see, CD imposes a long-term negative impact to which money is merely equivalent. Therefore, CD is not simply an exploitation but
Belongingness is an emotion that everyone longs to feel throughout the course of their lives. Starting in adolescence, we as humans are naturally attracted to others in a romantic way. Girls in junior high start wearing make-up and dressing nice in order to impress the boys and get their attention. During this time, both girls and boys want a boyfriend or girlfriend, and are interested in this idea of “dating.” As boys and girls progress into high school, dating becomes even more of the thing to do. As a young teenager, I wanted to date, but my parents were against it. Many parents have a negative outlook about dating because of the consequences it may lead to, mainly sexual activity. Some believe that dating has changed drastically for the worse, but Beth Bailey believes differently. In Bailey’s article entitled “From Front Porch to Backseat: A History of the Date,” she analyzes the history of dating and how numerous people have not conceptualized this idea correctly. By showing authority, evidence, and values, Bailey presents an effective argument about the history of dating.
Moreover, there is an array of cases regarding drug use: those who do not use drugs; those who became addicted after entering prostitution; those who resort to prostitution to support the habit; and those who are primarily addicts and exchange sexual favors for cocaine. The society is largely male-dominated, with pimps and fixers controlling the women and who they interact with; there are also numerous cases of violence perpetrated by pimps as well as customers. Another theme that is revealed is the dynamic of escaping prostitution and how these
The 1990 romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, is a popular film that represents several aspects of feminism through the character of Vivian Ward, a prostitute who experiences a change in social class when she meets corporate businessman, Edward Lewis. The film demonstrates society's placement of sex workers and the inequalities they face in everyday life due to the stigma and generalizations of the whole sex industry. I argue that the film Pretty Woman addresses the issues in society of the marginalization of sex workers and the high stigmatization that is associated with acts of sex work. In addition, through the character of Vivian, it is emphasized that sex workers have agency and empowerment of their own desires. I believe Vivian’s strong sense
When it comes to dating, we like to put our attention on seeing the fun and attractive side of them. Sometimes when we fall for our partner, we may believe how much they have or how much money they earn doesn’t matter because we may be in the stage of “are they the one?” (Leavy, 2013). You have the right mind set if you believe money shouldn’t matter, but the harsher truth is social class does affect our romantic relationship. If you and your partner grew up in different economic environments, you should be aware of the difference because they may have taken life so easily to appreciate that may cause you to feel uncomfortable because you may have had to struggle for it (Jezebel, 2015).
The value of a woman as a mother, wife, sister, daughter or aunt has been replaced for sexual please. Greed and perversion disguised as men chose to debase America’s women and children for their own selfish gain. Child sexual exploitation is the most hidden form of child abuse in the U.S. and North America today. It is the nation’s least recognized epidemic. The overwhelming majority of children forced to sell their bodies on the street are girls. Young boys face hardship and abuse as well, but they often fend for themselves to survive. The girls, on the other hand, inevitably fall victim to pimps and organized trafficking networks. (Sher, pg. V)
Prostitution, as stated by Flemming, is known as a form of sexual activity, a kind of sexual style or category, and a form of economic activity, a way of making a living through the provisions of certain services, by behaving in accordance with, or falling into such a category (39). This definition, though, is controversial. While conducting research for this project, we found that most topics regarding prostitution and its affiliates were controversial. Each author gave a differing interpretation for the same data. Due to this, our project centered on the female prostitutes, even though there is evidence of male prostitutes.
Accordingly, this emphasis has impacts on the types of pleasure that men request and want to receive that primarily focuses on their pleasure and not that of the women (Kimmel & Holler, 2011, p. 292). Hence, this demonstrates the power of men that is demonstrated by the domination and the submission of women within the sexual interaction (Kimmel & Holler, 2011, p. 124). Thus, gender inequality is reproduced whereby the male is the recipient focus of power (Kimmel & Holler, 2011, p. 291). Additionally, this sex with a prostitute will assist the man in gaining hegemonic status due to his conforming behaviours to the masculinity type (Kimmel & Holler, 2011, p.
Social status has played a major role in many different aspects of life practically since the beginning of time. Social status acts as a label for one’s predicament of living. Such a label directly affects day-to-day tasks, opportunities, and interactions. Generally, how we perceive others is a determining factor for the value we place upon them to our lives. For this particular study, I will be focusing on how social status affects dating/relationships. Dating is the basis of any intimate relationship that can potentially lead to a long-term arrangement such as marriage and pro-creation.
With prostitution still arising and thriving in present day America the Argument and war waged on it by media has changed from an advocated perspective, to being seen as present day slavery among women. Especially with modern practices of forced trafficking and drugged prostitution. the views have changed from one of a women's private and personal freedom of choice, to one of "the ones who weren't lucky enough to get away from being drugged, kidnapped and forced into slaved prostitution."

Elizabeth Anderson makes a claim that “The attempt to sell gift value on the market makes a mockery of those values.”(Anderson 188) Anderson uses this claim to object commoditized sex (prostitution). There are two premises that Anderson uses to support her claim. The first premise being the gift value of sex cannot be realized in commercial terms and the second premise being that the gift value of sex is more significant that the use value of sex itself.
The definition of a relationship has changed so many times in the past decades. It has gone from a connection between two people to an obsession and almost a competition. In today’s world a relationship consists of major intimacy and closeness. There are some who believe that intimacy while dating is wrong. They form their own definition of a relationship into what they call a “godly relationship”. Those supporting that kind of a relationship condemn sexual closeness and monitor who their young people are allowed to date. There are two worlds of dating in our lives today; one with infatuation and the other with togetherness.
Dating in our culture is a mysterious thing. The actual definition of a ‘date’ is different for certain people, in certain places and at a certain point in time. Even so, trying to define what dating really is very difficult. But in a general understanding of the term, dating is two people spending time together and going out and doing things, without any real sense of commitment towards each other. That is, they are both generally free to go on dates with other people as well. Focusing on heterosexual dating, there are many patterns or rituals that go into the whole concept of dating. These are hard to tag, because dating rituals are often distinct to particular settings. However, dating rituals have visibly changed throughout the twentieth century, and it is largely due to an advancing society. The advancement of women’s rights, the sexual revolution, and a more liberal and accepting society all help contribute to this change.
The importance of virginity varies from culture to culture. In Islamic cultures, a young woman is strictly forbidden from losing her virginity before marriage. A non-virgin is thought to bring shame onto herself, and her family. In fact, the family of a young female who engages in premarital sex can be severely punished or even killed. (Kalyani) In oriental societies, sex is barred before marriage; this asserts sexual control over the females. Not only is strongly encouraging women to abstain from sex before marriage used as a sexual control, virginity is also considered a business asset. Virgin brides are worth more in the marriage market (Schlegel), as apposed to someone with sexual practice; this leads to some families using their daughter’s virginity as a bargaining chip to climb the social ladder. By controlling a female’s virginity, the family controls the marriage choice. In present-day China, a woman’s virginity has a high significance in the society. The loss of a women’s virginity brings no spiritual guilt, but it does dish...
Dating was a source of enjoyment and recreations and forms experiences as a form of entertainment. It establishes social confidences, learn social skills, cooperation’s and conversations. It is evident how important communication is throughout the interviewees responses. Interview #2 realized, how consideration is important in a relationship. He recounted the time a woman made him search for hours for a cheaper item but, wasted more time and energy just to save money. He realized that consideration is important because it would make a person not perform certain actions for the greater good of the
