Social status has played a major role in many different aspects of life practically since the beginning of time. Social status acts as a label for one’s predicament of living. Such a label directly affects day-to-day tasks, opportunities, and interactions. Generally, how we perceive others is a determining factor for the value we place upon them to our lives. For this particular study, I will be focusing on how social status affects dating/relationships. Dating is the basis of any intimate relationship that can potentially lead to a long-term arrangement such as marriage and pro-creation. While researching this matter, I hope to find out how knowledge of a person’s financial standing influences other motives. There are many common phrases and ideas associated with this concept. For example, “marrying up/down” is often used; this idea refers to the pairing of classes between two individuals. There are different levels of classes in society; they are as follows: the upper class (consisting of two subgroups), the middle class (consisting of two subgroups), the working class (consisting of two subgroups), and the lower class. The upper class includes the lower-upper class, which is considered new money as well as the upper-upper class, which is known as old money. Those organized into the middle class are often known as white collar workers. The sublevels of this demographic are recognized as upper and lower middle class with jobs ranging from secretaries to CEOs. The working class is divided into blue collar workers, who usually are involved with fields that require skill, and the working poor, those who gain income by waitressing, dishwashing, operating cash registers, etc. Lastly, there is the lower class; this class is likely the ... ... middle of paper ... ...ne’s level of interest. The independent variables are the three different groups that are being studied. The ratings given by the participants will represent the dependent variables. The alpha is set as 0.05. According to SPSS, the results show that this study has a significance level of 0.000, which is less than 0.05. Because of this difference, it is appropriate to accept the research hypothesis and to reject the null hypothesis. Ultimately, this study shows that it is common for one person to rely on knowledge of another person’s financial aspect of life when determining whether or not to invest interest in them. Of course, there are other matters that could have altered these results such as if racial, cultural, age, or gender differences/expectations were considered. The matter of this study is prevalent in the field social psychology as well as everyday life.
